In recent years Maine’s role in the Civil War—especially in the Battle of Gettysburg—has gained increased renown due in part to movies and books such as Gettysburg and Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels. Maine’s fame has grown mostly due to one famous figure: Joshua Chamberlain. Chamberlain has become almost a legend in Maine, a historical figure that most Mainers are familiar with and are proud of. This paper discusses the life and legacy of Edward Elbridge Salisbury (1814-1901), focusing on his role as a founding member of the American Oriental Society-in particular his editorial and material support of the JAOS, and how this raised the international profile of American scholarship in Oriental studies.

In August 1841 the Yale Corporation appointed Salisbury as professor of Arabic and Sanskrit languages and literature, the first such position in the Americas. I assisted Dr. Harline in research with his upcoming book Wild Boar: The Rise of the Friar Martin Luther; 1517-1522. We explored these earlier key years of Martin Luther’s life, focusing on the events and people who shaped his rise to Reformation stardom, describing them in a new and refreshing way for a general audience. I was very involved not only in research and translation efforts, but also in seeking out illustrations for his book, contacting museums and obtaining permission to use each picture.
