Sound And Vision: Marketing Recorded Music In The Age Of Radio, Daniel Martin Murphy 2016 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

Sound And Vision: Marketing Recorded Music In The Age Of Radio, Daniel Martin Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

In the early 1930s, the popularity of radio and the economic austerity of the Great Depression threatened to make the phonograph record obsolete. However, by the time the United States entered World War II in 1941, records were returning to popularity. This return coincided with the first instances of the appearance of unique cover artwork on record albums. This thesis explores the cultural and industrial factors that converged in the late 1930s to make album artwork viable in ways that it would not have been earlier. This thesis also investigates how RCA Victor and Columbia, two record companies that had …

The Economy Of Typography (The Arrangement Or Mode Of Operation Of Typography), Jacqueline Raftery 2016 Technological University Dublin

The Economy Of Typography (The Arrangement Or Mode Of Operation Of Typography), Jacqueline Raftery

Masters

The thesis will show that the current research into legibility and readability regarding certain aspects or characters of type is incomplete, and will demonstrate what further research is necessary to complete the analysis of these aspects or characters in the economy of typography in continuous text. Chapter 1 will show that the development of reading depends on the legibility of the typography and characters ‘recognizing patterns, planning strategy, and feeling’ in other words reading and writing are interdependent all depend in some part on the construction of the characters and their relationship to each other. It will also show that …

The Creation Process Of A Stylized Character In Comparison To A Semi-Realistic Character, Caitlin D. Hall 4464202 2016 East Tennessee State University

The Creation Process Of A Stylized Character In Comparison To A Semi-Realistic Character, Caitlin D. Hall 4464202

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Abstract

I. Introduction

a. Thesis statement: What is the process for modeling a stylized character and how does this differ from a semi-realistic character?

b. Expanded thesis statement: The two styles differ from start to finish in a variety of ways. I believe that semi-realistic characters require more source material when drawing and modeling; however stylized characters require a different level of creativity and artistic ability in creation. Modeling semi-realistic characters will be more dependent on source images while stylized characters may require special attention with non-standard texture, style, etc. Rendering techniques will also differ when it goes to presenting …

Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen McKinney 2016 Iowa State University

Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen Mckinney

Ellen C. McKinney

Practical experiences of traditional and emerging processes in creative pattern cutting can be successfully documented and promoted through case study. Case study is a comprehensive research strategy for investigating an empirical topic by following a set of pre-specified procedures (Yin, 1994). The case study method is different from research methods such as experiments and surveys where statistical generalization is used to extend the results to a larger population. In the case study method, analytic generalization is used to generalize from the case study to theoretical propositions. This paper explores reasons and solutions for undocumented pattern cutting knowledge. Pattern cutters mentally …

Hovering, Benjamin J. Blatt

Masters Theses

Hovering is an attempt to navigate the contemporary digital environment through traditional means. The imagery created function as paintings, photographs, prints, and drawings. The Spatiality In Storytelling, Xiang Yu 2016 University of Massachusetts Amherst

The Spatiality In Storytelling, Xiang Yu

Masters Theses

Theatre has always been played a irreplaceable role in people’s lives, even nowadays where people have multiple choices for entertainment. Some theater architecture has also become the symbol of the city, such as Paris Opéra and Sydney Opera House. By taking a close look at various case studies, one will understand how the theatre architecture corresponds with their city representing its history, culture and visions for the future.

The development of my thesis is based on the integration of the ‘space’ of storytelling and the space of design. Will the quality of space bring out the memories that have been …

Primate Aesthetics, Chelsea L. Sams 2016 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Primate Aesthetics, Chelsea L. Sams

Masters Theses

A cultural, historical, and scientific survey of the phenomena of primate pictorial behavior, presented in a series of interconnected vignettes. What do primates find visually appealing? What is their motivation when creating images? What are the implications for art and for science? By drawing explicit and implicit connections between science, art, case studies, research, and personal narrative, I attempt to weave together what we know, and what we may never be able to know about this complex field.

Summoning The Body That Acts, Brendan M. McCauley 2016 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Summoning The Body That Acts, Brendan M. Mccauley

Masters Theses

Seven series of artworks; painted, drawn and performed. These works are presented as affective incorporation exercises, that test modes of aesthetic communication in response to varying political contingencies. The constitutive processes used to develop the work also function as a methodology for my own political radicalization. As an artist I am wagering how to talk, as an activist I am preparing to act. The artworks discussed occur at the crossroads of these desires as enactions of futurity within the subjunctive mood.

Alone In The Crowd: Appropriated Text And Subjectivity In The Work Of Rirkrit Tiravanija, Liz Linden 2016 University of Wollongong

Alone In The Crowd: Appropriated Text And Subjectivity In The Work Of Rirkrit Tiravanija, Liz Linden

Faculty Publications

The practice of Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija is perhaps the best-known exemplar of relational aesthetics, a distinction first made by Nicholas Bourriaud and affirmed in the writings of many subsequent art critics; but the critical focus on the interactive aspect of his works has tended to rely on utopian modes of community engagement, which ignore Tiravanija's strategic deployment of relational, interactive structures to implicate the viewer, publicly, in problematic political positions. Tiravanija commonly uses appropriation in his artworks as a way of exposing viewer's biases and this paper focuses specifically on his use of appropriated text to explore divided subjectivities …

Categorization Of Hong Kong Modern Males With Regard To Predictors Of Menswear Design Preferences In Terms Of Physical And Socio-Psychological Dimensions, Travis Wang Hei Li, Joe S. Au, Raymond W. Au 2016 Technological and Higher Education institute of Hong Kong (THEi)

Categorization Of Hong Kong Modern Males With Regard To Predictors Of Menswear Design Preferences In Terms Of Physical And Socio-Psychological Dimensions, Travis Wang Hei Li, Joe S. Au, Raymond W. Au

Faculty of Design & Environment (THEi)

Proportional grading, which offers the closest fit by producing various sizes, is commonly used in sizing systems for mass production today. However, wearers’ socio-psychological concerns are not taken into account during the development of the system, which may churn out ineffective fits. This study provides knowledge of menswear evaluation by taking into account men’s physical and socio-psychological dimensions. This study successfully categorizes modern males according to their preferences of menswear, concerning the predictors of menswear design preferences in physical (i.e. Body Mass Index [BMI]) and psychological dimensions (i.e. menswear functions and menswear involvement). Subjects were divided into three clusters: (1) …
