Low-Income Health Care Networks: Initial Conditions, Extent, And Intensity Relevant To County Government Participation, Hillary Knepper

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Contemporary health care systems in the United States are not equitable. Indeed, as the literature indicates, there are substantial differences in the variety and scope of service delivery based on age, income, and other socio-economic indicators. The recent passage of health care reform in the United States illustrates that Americans are seeking to bring balance and equity to health care. However, as learned in this study, county governments across the country have been working in their communities to ensure some balance and equity, by making a safety net available for those citizens who are unable to access health care. Perhaps …

Organizational Social Capital And Perceived Performance Of Drug Law Enforcement Departments: A Case Study In Turkey, Ismail Sahin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Supply reduction efforts by drug law enforcement departments are a significant factor in improving the effectiveness of drug control policies. As with other public organizations, the performance of drug law enforcement departments is one of the most important concerns for policy makers. Therefore, improving the performance of these departments is crucial in order for governments to constrict illegal drug markets and prevent illegal drug distribution. The literature suggests that social capital may have significant implications for policy makers and practitioners in terms of enhancing organizational performance.Social capital has recently been examined at the organizational level. "Why Didn't They Ask Us?": Memories Of Muslim Young Adults In Public Schools In The U. S. September 11, 2001, Jean Surratt Humphreys

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

Where were you on September 11, 2001? How did that day change your life? How would you remember September 11, 2001 if you were a young Muslim in the United States during this time, if you become the "enemy"? Young adult Muslims are different from their older generation and from other young religious adults, having become more religious in their twenties. This study focuses on perceived Islamophobia that Muslim students report encountering in public schools, as well as in the larger community, particularly while traveling, resulting from public policies in response to September 11, specifically the Patriot Act. The methodology …

Examining Individual Student Success Through The Lens Of New Institutional Economics In An Urban Public School District : The Great Graduation Gamble, Arvell Lynn Dehart

Public Affairs Dissertations - Archive

In a perfect world, neo-classical economics and rational theory make sense. But in this imperfect world this paper has turned to Oliver Williamson and his understanding of New Institutional Economics to help us make sense. NIE helps explain institutions and organizations and their role in creating and shaping contracts that fit a very diverse institutional, organizational and human landscape. NIE provides a new lens to examine institutions as diverse as politics and as rigid as economics. Yet, one critical institution has yet to be examined through that lens. That institution is Public Education. It is that examination which this paper …

Tribal Gaming And The Political Contributions Strategies Of Native American Tribes In Minnesota, Thomas Sorenson 2010 Bemidji State University

Tribal Gaming And The Political Contributions Strategies Of Native American Tribes In Minnesota, Thomas Sorenson

Political Science Theses and Capstones

The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has made a big impact on tribal-state relations since it was enacted in 1988 by the federal government. Tribes have started to make campaign contributions to state and federal politicians to help try to mold lawmakers to vote for Tribal interests. My research looks at Minnesota tribes and their campaign contributions to House members during the 2005 election, and whether these lawmakers voted for tribal issues during their term. For control variables I also gathered a variety of information related to legislative districts. What my analysis has shown is that the tribes in Minnesota donate …

Obedience, Schooling, And Political Participation, Davin Chor, Filipe R. Campante

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a framework for understanding the joint evolution of cultural norms and human capital investment, and how these affect patterns of political participation. We first present some empirical evidence that cultural attitudes towards obedience systematically influence an individual's propensity to engage in different political activities: obedience discourages more confrontational modes of political activity (such as public demonstrations), while raising participation in non-confrontational civic acts (such as voting). These cultural attitudes further appear to be determined in part by cultural transmission across generations. Motivated by this evidence, we develop a dynamic model in which human capital and obedience are …
