Corruption In Metropolis, Josie Gatti
Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)
Corruption may be one of the most elusive phenomena in government. We may know it when we see it, but it is subject to individual perceptions shaped by a myriad of influences. The federal system of American governance was indented to impede the gross misuse of power; however, corruption is as much a part of our system today as it is around the world. While the study of the micro and individual level factors that inspire corruption are relevant, governance and business studies have long shown that structure and systems can affect behavior. This research reflects on those institutions and …

Positive Youth Justice: Framing Justice Interventions Using The Concepts Of Positive Youth Development, Jeffrey A. Butts, Gordon Bazemore, Aundra Saa Meroe
Publications and Research
Positive youth development could be an effective framework for designing general interventions for young offenders. Such a framework would encourage youth justice systems to focus on protective factors and risk factors, strengths, problems, and broader efforts to facilitate successful transitions to adulthood for justice-involved youth. The positive youth development approach supports youth in successfully transitioning from adolescence to early adulthood by encouraging young people to develop useful skills and competencies and build stronger connections with pro-social peers, families, and communities (Butts, Mayer, & Ruth, & Ruth, 2005). Young people engaged with trustworthy adults and peers to pursue meaningful activities and …

Creating A Comprehensive Profile Of The Academic Competitiveness Grant, Kelsea Klein
Political Science Theses and Capstones
The recent push for more Americans to attend postsecondary institutions has led to the development of numerous and far-reaching government student financial aid programs. These programs have aimed at supplying the whole of the population with financial assistance regardless of color, gender, or age. However, the distribution of the aid has encountered many problems as critics argue that the recipients of the aid are primarily limited to a narrow subgroup of the population. A new program created under the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 called the Academic Competitiveness Grant is no exception. Preliminary logit analysis of the reception rates …

Taking Money: The Politics Of Asset Forfeiture In The State Of Minnesota, Chad Hedman
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Is there a reason why a particular county might use asset forfeiture more than others? Asset forfeiture, in short, is law enforcement confiscating any items used in the act of committing a crime. As many governments face more budget crunches and deficits all means of revenue will become more vital to everyday operations. Everything gets reported back to the Minnesota State Auditor, where I was able to get complete data on every county. For variables such as education, race and others I drew from numerous government websites. I wanted to see if certain variables correlated with higher incidence of forfeiture. …

The Impact Of Short Term Economic Data On The Perception Of Public Officials: Analysis Of The 2008 Economic Crisis And The American Presidential Election, James A. Foster
Political Science Theses and Capstones
As the economy of the United States fluctuated in the months leading to the 2008 presidential election, so did the public’s perception of the two leading candidates for the Oval Office. While American voting habits and economic trends have been researched heavily, the potential to analyze the effects of the economy on public opinion during an historic recession is just being uncovered. Using data from the 2008 American National Election Study, as well as daily closing numbers of the Dow Jones Industrial Average, trends emerge suggesting a possible relationship between short run economic indicators and the public’s views towards political …

Juvenile Delinquency Policy And Juvenile Crime In The American States, Jennifer Baker
Political Science Theses and Capstones
Every year each state comes out with a report on all the possible crimes that were committed and how many people were convicted for various crimes in a given state. The same goes for juveniles, as reported in the Juvenile Offenders and Victims 2006 National Report. I compiled data on the fifty states and their programs directed towards juveniles. I then compared the different crimes against the different programs to see if there was any significant difference in Crime rates between states having a specific juvenile justice program or not. I found that some of the programs did affect crime …

In any society, the level of political activism and participation is an important factor in the way the government and society functions. In Argentina, specifically, the issue of political activism is especially significant because of the form it took during the 1960s and 1970s and the consequences that followed. Modeled after Che Guevara’s conception of the “Hombre Nuevo” (New Man), the political activism of this period in Argentina formed as “militancia,” in which political actors took up the “lucha armada” (armed fight) in order to confront government repression. After years of conflict, social unrest and government failures, a civil-military dictatorship, …

Omaha Community Foundation Capacity-Building Survey: Final Report, R. K. Piper, Beth Morrissette
Past Publications
This final report summarizes the major findings of a Non-Profit Capacity-Building Survey conducted for the Omaha Community Foundation working in cooperation with the Non-Profit Association of the Midlands.1 The purpose of the survey is to help determine which functional capacity-building areas (and specific activities within each) pose the greatest challenges for non-profit organizations in fulfilling their missions.
In addition to identifying the major barriers they face, the survey also asks Executive Directors or Chief Executive Officers to estimate to total dollar cost they think their agency would need to invest over the next two years to remove or adequately address …

The debate over expanding health insurance coverage has captivated the United States, especially during 2009. While much of the debate and many public forums have been driven by emotion, a new data source from the U.S. Census Bureau can add more factual information regarding the current state of U.S. health insurance coverage. While a limited amount of health insurance coverage data existed previously, new data from the Census Bureau’s annual American Community Survey (ACS) greatly expands the level and detail of relevant information. Prior to this ACS information, health insurance coverage data were focused on the national level; state data …

Understanding Social Networks In Frazier Courts Hope Vi Development, Christopher Buentello
Public Affairs Theses - Archive
The HOPE VI program enacted in 1992 represented a shift in public housing by addressing resident's needs through physical design improvements, self-sufficiency programs, and the deconcentration of poverty. Funding through HOPE VI allowed local housing authorities to demolish deteriorated public housing units and replace them with new income-inclusive housing units. The "hope" would be that low income residents would interact with middle income residents to access resources that are normally beyond the reach of low income individuals. This assumes of course that residents will interact amongst each other. Therefore, I conducted a survey of residents at Dallas' Frazier Courts to …
