Creating A Theoretical Framework To Underpin Discourse Assessment And Intervention In Aphasia, Lucy Dipper, Jane Marshall, Mary Boyle, Deborah Hersh, Nicola Botting, Madeline Cruice 2021 University of London

Creating A Theoretical Framework To Underpin Discourse Assessment And Intervention In Aphasia, Lucy Dipper, Jane Marshall, Mary Boyle, Deborah Hersh, Nicola Botting, Madeline Cruice

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Discourse (a unit of language longer than a single sentence) is fundamental to everyday communication. People with aphasia (a language impairment occurring most frequently after stroke, or other brain damage) have communication difficulties which lead to less complete, less coherent, and less complex discourse. Although there are multiple reviews of discourse assessment and an emerging evidence base for discourse intervention, there is no unified theoretical framework to underpin this research. Instead, disparate theories are recruited to explain different aspects of discourse impairment, or symptoms are reported without a hypothesis about the cause. What is needed is a theoretical framework that …

Music, Our Human Superpower, Kristin Lems 2021 NLU

Music, Our Human Superpower, Kristin Lems

Faculty Publications

Research about music pervades every discipline because music touches every area of life. Studies revealing the salutary effects of music can be found not only in music educator research, but in research in psychology, speech and hearing, child development, neuroscience, and increasingly, health and wellness, aging, rehabilitation and recovery. Since my focus is especially in the areas of language and literacy, I research the positive effects of music on reading, writing, and learning languages - and of this, there is no shortage. In this brief Academia article, I share what I’d like to call an “homage-with-references” to our great Superpower, …

When Misclassification Is Misgendering: Gender Prediction In The Context Of Trans Identities, Sean Miller 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

When Misclassification Is Misgendering: Gender Prediction In The Context Of Trans Identities, Sean Miller

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

As a subdomain of author profiling, gender prediction (sometimes called gender inference) has received a substantial amount of attention—both as a task in itself, and for other downstream analyses. Throughout the existing literature various statistical and machine learning methods have been applied to extract features in order to either characterize and differentiate female and male writing styles, or simply to achieve maximum accuracy on gender prediction as a binary classification task. However, researchers often do not disclose how they conceptualize gender nor do they consider the implications that gender prediction has for non-binary and trans individuals. Along with an overview …

A Computational Study In The Detection Of English–Spanish Code-Switches, Yohamy C. Polanco 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

A Computational Study In The Detection Of English–Spanish Code-Switches, Yohamy C. Polanco

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Code-switching is the linguistic phenomenon where a multilingual person alternates between two or more languages in a conversation, whether that be spoken or written. This thesis studies the automatic detection of code-switching occurring specifically between English and Spanish in two corpora.

Twitter and other social media sites have provided an abundance of linguistic data that is available to researchers to perform countless experiments. Collecting the data is fairly easy if a study is on monolingual text, but if a study requires code-switched data, this becomes a complication as APIs only accept one language as a parameter. This thesis focuses on …

The Non-Uniformity Of Chinese Wh-Indefinites Through The Lens Of Algebraic Structure, Zhuo Chen 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

The Non-Uniformity Of Chinese Wh-Indefinites Through The Lens Of Algebraic Structure, Zhuo Chen

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation investigates the non-uniformity of Chinese wh-indefinites. The different algebraic structures associated with the different wh-indefinites are shown to play a signif- icant role in determining their possible readings. Specifically, those wh-indefinites that are associated with an unordered algebraic structure can give rise to an epistemic reading in both positive and negative sentences. Those wh-indefinites that are associated with a structure of total ordering never have an epistemic reading. They have an existential reading in posi- tive sentences and generate an insignificance reading under a clausemate negation. Shenme ‘what’ is a special in that it straddles both types of …

Prosody And Intonation In Formosan Languages, Benjamin K. Macaulay 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

Prosody And Intonation In Formosan Languages, Benjamin K. Macaulay

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Formosan languages are the languages of the Aboriginal peoples of Taiwan. These languages are part of the Austronesian language family, and represent all but one primary branch of this family of 1,200+ languages. The Formosan languages are endangered, some critically so. While these languages have seen attention in the literature for their syntactic and phonological systems, little work has been done on their prosodic structure or intonation.

This dissertation analyzes the prosodic structure and intonational phonology of Mantauran Rukai, Budai Rukai, Tsou, Kanakanavu, Hla’alua, Sandimen Paiwan, Piuma Paiwan, Kavalan, Amis, Bunun, Tgdaya Seediq, Truku Seediq, and Pazeh, based on …

Adjectives Pertaining To Good And Evil In The Tales Of The Brothers Grimm And Their Universal Values, Julia Wulandari, Setiawati Darmojuwono

International Review of Humanities Studies

The values of good and evil in the tales recounted by the Brothers Grimm are so universal that they have become an integral part of world literature. The research data for this paper was compiled from three tales, Aschenputtel (Cinderella), Rapunzel, and Schneewittchen (Snow White). This research project analyzed the language used in the stories to assess the values of virtue and evil that prevailed in reality in German society at the time the stories were compiled, and that are still valid today. This paper intends to describe the 19th century German concepts of good and bad, the pan-German values …

Polysemantics And Filter In Semantic Tagging System, Dildora Bahodirovna Akhmedova 2021 doctor of philosophy in philology, BSU

Polysemantics And Filter In Semantic Tagging System, Dildora Bahodirovna Akhmedova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. Semantic markup is an issue that has been thoroughly studied by experts. If the first generation of language corpora was a collection of electronic texts, then a tool with a query-responsive interface was later formed into literal corporations with linguistic and extralinguistic markings. Linguistically marked corpuses were initially only morphological, then morpho-syntactic, and in recent years the perfect form of linguistic marking - the corpus with morphological, syntactic and semantic markings - has undergone a stage of development. The introduction of semantic markup into the case was initially based on theory, while semantic marking problems were explored. Yu.D. Apresyan, …

Figurativeness Of Zoonyms In English And Uzbek Languages, Omongul Kenjabayevna Khalibekova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. Relevance is due to a certain level of undevelopment of many issues related to the human factor in the language. The development of this problematic seems promising for identifying the national and cultural characteristics of English and Uzbek phraseological units, which allows us to increase our vocabulary and, therefore, enrich our speech. This article examines the semantic-pragmatic and connotatively evaluative relations of phraseological units based on animal images in English and Uzbek languages. Zoonyms imply textual roles within a specific discourse and difference in values, stereotypes and behaviour patterns in national cultures. Methods. Studying nominations of a human with a …

National-Specific And Universal Means Of Expressing The Concepts "Winter" And "Summer” In The Russian And Uzbek Language Pictures Of The World, Otabek Timurovich Nosirov

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Background. In this article, Russian will be the source language, and Uzbek will be the language of comparison. Because, despite the structural differences between the Russian and Uzbek languages, our countries have a historical experience of social, cultural, and of course, linguistic interaction. Methods. Given that the language projections of the collective unconscious, in this case the conceptual opposition "winter-summer", do not have blood and racial inheritance, but belong to humanity as a whole, we can conclude that the deep or basic cognitive layers of the concepts of winter and summer in both the Russian and Uzbek languages contain a …

The Classification Of Phraseological Units With Onomastic Components, Marjona Akhmadovna Radjabova 2021 english teacher, foreign languages department Bukhara Engineering-Technological Institute

The Classification Of Phraseological Units With Onomastic Components, Marjona Akhmadovna Radjabova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Abstract. The following article discusses the role of onomastic components in phraseological units and their meaning as well as giving a classification of onomastic components in phraseological units based on the materials of different structural languages. Through examples the author proves that the presence of names in the ancient rich phraseological layer of non-fraternal English, Russian and Uzbek languages is related to the national and cultural values, customs, ancient history, folklore and daily life of the peoples who speak this language. Besides, in the process of study of onomastic components it is also determined that names, along with forming their …

The Importance Of Linguistic Models In The Development Of Language Bases, Guli Ibragimovna Toirova

Scientific reports of Bukhara State University

Relevance. In Uzbek linguistics, a number of studies have been carried out on automatic translation, the development of the linguistic foundations of the author's corpus, the processing of lexicographic texts and linguistic-statistical analysis. The article discusses such problems as: the transformation of language into the language of the Internet, computer technology, mathematical linguistics, …

“Pick A Card, Any Card”: Learning To Deceive And Conceal – With Care, Brian Rappert 2021 University of Exeter

“Pick A Card, Any Card”: Learning To Deceive And Conceal – With Care, Brian Rappert

Secrecy and Society

Because of the asymmetries in knowledge regarding the underlying hidden mechanisms as well as because of the importance of intentional deception, entertainment magic is often presented as an exercise in power, manipulation, and control. This article challenges such portrayals and through doing so common presumptions about how secrets are kept. It does so through recounting the experiences of the author as a beginner learning a craft. Regard for the choices and tensions associated with the accomplishment of mutually recognized deception in entertainment magic are marshalled to consider how it involves ‘reciprocal action’ between the audience and the performer. Attending to …

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman 2021 The American University in Cairo AUC

A Methodological Approach To Utilize Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As A Source For Ancient Egyptian Linguistic Analysis, Ahmed Osman

Theses and Dissertations

Traces of the ancient Egyptian language can still be observed in modern Egyptian colloquial Arabic, which is the form of Arabic adopted by Egyptians as their native spoken language. This thesis aims to better understand the ancient Egyptian language through the analysis of its lexical survivals. It presents a new methodological approach to utilize ancient Egyptian lexical survivals as a source to study the ancient Egyptian language. A selected set of fifty-five ancient Egyptian lexical survivals was computed by matching ancient Egyptian and documented Egyptian colloquial Arabic words having the same semantic fields. While it was generally assumed that the …

Allophonie Et Plurilinguisme À L’École Française : Quand Dire, C’Est Déjà Traduire, Matthieu Marchadour 2021 Université de Rennes, Université d’Alger 2

Allophonie Et Plurilinguisme À L’École Française : Quand Dire, C’Est Déjà Traduire, Matthieu Marchadour

Al-Kīmiyā

In this article, inspired from our researches in sociolinguistics, we suggest that translation is a permanent process which is not only linked to switching from one language to another, but is also linked to the action of speaking itself. “Allophone pupils”, foreigners in a sense that they don’t speak French, are for the teachers we interviewed a kind of limit which could to be used to question the boundaries between languages and the understanding of otherness. Thus, plurilingualism and translation would not only concern foreign people who speak different languages, but also people who think speak the same language, because …

Le Phénomène Baudelaire Dans La Traduction, Ana-Maria Antonesei

Al-Kīmiyā

The study entitled Le phénomène Baudelaire dans la traduction (The Baudelaire phenomenon in translation) will be focused on the (re)translation of Charles Baudelaire’s work in Romanian, a phenomenon that should be investigated in the context of its production, including the socio-cultural environment. In the first part of the paper, we will try to sketch an answer concerning the impact of socio-cultural changes in translation, taking as support an overview on the translation’s history of Baudelaire in Romania. The second part will be dedicated to an investigation which had as purpose the examination of two research hypotheses: at the moment, translation …

"Have You Heard The News?" : Réflexions Sur La Traduction Du Bavardage Social Dans Le Roman « Emma » De Jane Austen, Klara Boestad

Al-Kīmiyā

Translating a literary text is rarely limited to the translation of powerfully lyrical descriptions or soliloquys. In Jane Austen’s Emma, the translator is confronted with a narrative full of dialogue involving around a dozen central characters, all of whom spend most of their time happily exchanging and passing on pleasantries, news, and rumours. In this article, I will examine how gossiping has been studied in English-language and French-language literary and theoretical discourse, and whether potential metadiscursive discrepancies between the two language cultures may have an impact on published translations of the novel. We will support our argument with a …

Linguistique Juridique, Nada Kfouri Khoury

Al-Kīmiyā

Gérard Cornu G. (2000). Linguistique juridique.
