Why Is Workforce Development Such A Big Deal Now?, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

For those linked to agriculture or agri-business, you are not only dealing with the national constraints of the current workforce, but if you are involved specifically in production agriculture, you are also hit by the changing size and scope of on-farm workforce trends. These are just a few of the reasons why workforce development in general, and especially in the agricultural sector, is a big deal now.

Reports

This report estimates training needs in three Kalamazoo “core neighborhoods”: the Northside, Edison, and the Eastside. Using Census data, the analysis estimates the number of people potentially needing training in these neighborhoods as between 1,254 and 2,098 individuals. This report also estimates this training population’s characteristics, including: childcare needs, lack of a household vehicle, disability, felony records, substance abuse, mental illness. All these characteristics pose challenges for many hundreds in the training population. Based on a review of prior effective “sectoral training programs”, a training program may cost $7,300 per trainee, with over two-thirds of this cost due to various …

The Effect Of Franchise No-Poaching Restrictions On Worker Earnings, Brian Callaci, Matthew Gibson, Sérgio Pinto, Marshall Steinbaum, Matt Walsh

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We evaluate the nationwide impact of the Washington State attorney general’s 2018-2020 enforcement campaign against no-poach clauses in franchising contracts, which prohibited worker movement across locations within a chain. Implementing a staggered difference-in-differences research design using Burning Glass Technologies job vacancies and Glassdoor salary reports from numerous industries, we estimate a 6 percent increase in posted annual earnings from the job vacancy data and a 4 percent increase in worker-reported earnings.

Epilogue, Noe Alexander Aguado 2024 University of North Alabama

Epilogue, Noe Alexander Aguado

Politics, Justice, Law, and Philosophy

This collection intended to update Thomson’s (2002) work in time for the 125th anniversary of the 1901 Constitution. The essays in A Century of Controversy continue to be enlightening. Alabama’s tumultuous history is fascinating and troubling. The book highlights that the framers of the 1901 Constitution sought to create a form of government that institutionalized white supremacy, undermining democracy in the process. Throughout Alabama’s history, when opportunities arose to right the wrongs of the 1901 Constitutional Convention – to adequately fund education and infrastructure and allow for local-level democracy – Alabama’s lawmakers have consistently chosen not to do so …

The Impact Of Delaying Early School Tracking On Fertility And Marriage Outcomes, Serena Canaan 2024 Simon Fraser University

The Impact Of Delaying Early School Tracking On Fertility And Marriage Outcomes, Serena Canaan

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper studies how the type of education pursued at an early age affects family formation. I focus on a French reform that delayed the age of which students were tracked into either general or vocational education from age 11 to age 13. For the most part, tracking was replaced with grouping students into classrooms based on ability, but within a common general education curriculum. Using a regression discontinuity design, I show that the reform increased the likelihood of attaining a technical rather than a vocational degree, especially for individuals from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This indicates that the reform led …

The Influence Of Socio-Economic Constraints On Women's Economic Empowerment In Kenya: Evidence Of Wage Disparities?, Wairimu Kimani 2024 University of San Diego

The Influence Of Socio-Economic Constraints On Women's Economic Empowerment In Kenya: Evidence Of Wage Disparities?, Wairimu Kimani

McNair Summer Research Program

This study presents an econometric analysis of socio-economic factors which influence wage inequalities in Kenya. This study tests the hypothesis that women experience cross sectoral gender wage disparities which are influenced by cultural and social expectations. Linear, logistic, factorial regressions models and the Mann-Whitney test were utilized to identify statistical determinants of the gender-wage gap through disproportionate educational outcomes, labor outcomes, and social outcomes. The outcomes reflect that education and other demographic factors play a pivotal role in the wage and employment outcomes for women in Kenya. The results suggest that cultural implications are the main influence to the socio-economic …

Experiments On Employer-Employee Relationships, Hang Chen 2024 Southern Methodist University

Experiments On Employer-Employee Relationships, Hang Chen

Economics Theses and Dissertations

Employer-employee relationships exist commonly in workplaces and are important for people to understand the interactions between employers and employees and also their own behavior. This dissertation presents studies of different aspects of employer-employee relationships using laboratory experiments. Chapter 1 studies how the problematic nature of many middle management positions drive middle managers to interact with their employees in a negative way in workplaces, as they are under pressure from upper management to extract high effort from their employees, but given few incentives to do so. Chapter 2 focuses on the potential peer effects of employees' performance feedback and performance. My …

The Bronx, despite its proximity to the other boroughs of New York City, has the highest poverty rates among them. Using data from 2010 to 2022, this study examines the socioeconomic disparities between the Bronx and Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. Key indicators analyzed include poverty levels, SNAP benefits, unemployment rates, median income, educational attainment, homeownership rates, business creation, and GDP per capita. Our study reveals that the Bronx has the highest poverty, unemployment, and SNAP benefit dependency rates, lower educational attainment, and the lowest median income and homeownership rates. Essays On Aging, Health, And Labor Market, Lanjie Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This dissertation consists of four chapters on aging, health, and labor economics.

In the first chapter, we investigate the short-term impacts of unemployment on older workers in Singapore, a setting without public unemployment insurance. Using monthly panel data, we analyze dynamic impacts on income, spending, health, and subjective well-being over two years post-unemployment. We find substantial initial earnings losses with incomplete recovery, with income remaining 46.5% below pre-unemployment levels after 24 months. Despite this persistent income gap, consumption responses are modest and comparable to countries with strong social safety nets, suggesting robust self-insurance mechanisms. We observe increased retirement among married …

Essays On Education And Family Economics, Yue Hu 2024 Clemson University

Essays On Education And Family Economics, Yue Hu

All Dissertations

The dissertation consists of three essays: the first two discuss the effect of American high school vocational education on individuals' labor market and educational outcomes, and the third essay explores the effect of unilateral divorce laws on women's labor force participation rates. In the first chapter, treating vocational class choice as a continuous variable, I used family-fixed effects to investigate the average effect of American high school vocational classes on students' labor market and educational outcomes. The findings indicate that high school vocational classes significantly decrease the likelihood of attending a four-year college but do not significantly affect other educational …

The achievement of unmet need for family planning in the last two years has decreased from 14,7 percent in 2022 to 11,5 percent in 2023. However, that rate is still high because 2024 RPJMN target of unmet need for FP in Indonesia is 7,4 percent. The policies made by the government to reduce unmet need for FP are utilizing ICT and improving access to family planning services. Thus, this research aims to study the relationship between utilizing ICT and access with unmet need for FP in Indonesia. Based on data from 2017 IDHS, the analytical method used in this research …

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

In recent years, the muslim majority countries’ focus on women’s labor force participation has grown, particularly Indonesia which stands out with its high female labor force participation rate. We aim to shed light on the relationship between religion and work decisions in Indonesia, employing data from the World Value Survey and utilizing logistic regression analysis. Our findings reveal that active participation in religious activities positively affects muslim women’s likelihood of working part-time and in the agricultural sector. Through the results, policymakers and relevant stakeholders can consider leveraging religious organizations as potential channels for promoting women’s labor force participation.

Effects Of Peer Groups On The Gender-Wage Gap And Life After The Mba: Evidence From The Random Assignment Of Mba Peers, Mallika Thomas

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

Using the historical random assignment of MBA students to peer groups at a top business school in the United States, I study the effect of the gender composition of a student’s peers on the gender pay gap at graduation and long-term labor market outcomes. I find that a 10 percentage point increase in the share of male peers leads to a 2.1 percent increase in the relative earnings of female students at graduation, closing the gender gap in earnings at graduation by two-thirds. The effects on women’s long-term earnings grow even larger with time. Using novel data on job offers, …
