Library Publishing Curriculum
On the surface, launching a journal may appear to be one of the simplest, most straightforward means of starting a library publishing program, especially if a professor or group of students comes to you with a pre-formed idea. But even such service-oriented projects can be deceptively complex. Are the editor’s needs and expectations aligned with the your resources and capacity? What roles and skills do you need to successfully support a journal? How will you promote the journal to potential authors and readers? In this unit, you’ll learn the fundamentals of launching and maintaining a journal publishing program in a …

Library Publishing Curriculum
This unit focuses on strategic planning methods and tools designed to increase impact. As we aim to maximize the impact and value of our publishing programs, portfolios, and individual products, whether through decision about content or the activities related to marketing and promotion, we must begin by understanding and articulating our organizational objectives. Library publishers may aspire to increase their impact on campus (among scholars, students, and administrators); among local or global publics; and upon specific fields and communities of practice. Extending impact begins with thoughtful and purposeful strategic planning: aligning goals with organizational objectives, articulating desired outcomes, and understanding …

The previous construct of research was focused on social media platforms as a benefactor in broadcasting towards a global audience with non-academic professions. Following along the same ideology, this research directs the attention to a pertained audience in academic profession.
•Embry-Riddle is the host of Scholarly Commons which collects the research of authors (faculty members), and assists in developing a digital portfolio. This portfolio creates metric measurements on a dashboard to indicate where downloads are occurring, and aids in providing current information pertaining to the authors’ publication. •In this case, the publication of the National Airline Quality Rating (AQR) ( …

The Keepers: A Collaborative Constructive Narrative Podcast, Shay Carroll
Honors Projects
This is a fictional podcast series that presents a story that is completed through roleplaying. The structure follows that of a video game, with the main characters, or "players," interacting with a set plot while deciding their own course of action. I act as the narrator for the story, controlling the plot and setting as well as non-player characters, or "NPCs." For the purposes of consistency and making sure the characters do not do anything that would be considered too over-powered or unrealistic, I have chosen to use the rule guide and statistics modifier system presented by Wizards of the …

Where Do Facts Matter? The Digital Paradox In Magazines' Fact-Checking Practices, Susan Currie Sivek, Sharon Bloyd-Peshkin

Print magazines are unique among nonfiction media in their dedication of staff and resources to in-depth, word-by-word verification of stories. Over time, this practice has established magazines’ reputation for reliability, helped them retain loyal readers amid a glut of information sources, and protected them from litigation. But during the past decade, websites, mobile platforms, and social media have expanded the types of stories and other content that magazines provide readers. Doing so has shortened the time between the creation and dissemination of content, challenging and in some cases squeezing out fact-checkers’ participation. This study examines the procedures applied to stories …

Consuming Digital Debris In The Plasticene, Stephen R. Parks
Theses and Dissertations
Claims of customization and control by socio-technical industries are altering the role of consumer and producer. These narratives are often misleading attempts to engage consumers with new forms of technology. By addressing capitalist intent, material, and the reproduction limits of 3-D printed objects’, I observe the aspirational promise of becoming a producer of my own belongings through new networks of production. I am interested in gaining a better understanding of the data consumed that perpetuates hyper-consumptive tendencies for new technological apparatuses. My role as a designer focuses on the resolution of not only the surface of the object through 3-D …

A Checklist For Mortals: Preparing For Death’S Arrival, Becky Daniel
College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Professional Projects
We learn everything from our parents—how to walk, talk and treat potential life partners. Yet our culture in the United States makes it difficult to talk to our parents about death and those consequences have a real impact. Closing a loved one’s estate can stretch from months to years without proper planning. While death is constant, the death industry is not. It is ever changing. And while all lives have equal value, there are many preparations that one person may need (veteran, parent, lotto winner) while another does not. The best way to prepare for death is to know its …

Creating Effective Style Documents: A Practicum In Trade Publication, Kristen Tardio
Master of Arts in Professional Writing Capstones
It is no secret that the field of publication thrives on collaboration: among publishers, editorial and production team members, designers, marketing and publicity staff, sales representatives and promoters, authors, illustrators, reviewers, and, of course, readers. However, an equally important yet less-explored relationship exists within this industry, between publishing staff and a text itself. As such, despite this crucial connection, the technical means by which the final product is created may also be overlooked.
This practicum examines these technical resources: style guides/sheets (especially for house style), their creation, and their usage in publishing, specifically how they pertain to sales material. Also …
