April 2017 marks the 100^th anniversary of the United States entering World War I. Many enjoy learning about the battles, the military, and the Homefront. But there is a need for more scholarship to understand the role African Americans played in the war. From my research, many African Americans disagreed with US involvement. Why would a country agree to fight for democracy overseas when its citizens need freedom at home? Racism in the United States concerned African Americans deeply. At the same time, however, African Americans viewed World War I as a way to demonstrate their patriotism. Black citizens …

Science education is facilitated within science libraries.

The future of science libraries is predicated on librarians maintaining a meaningful relationship with those engaging in scholarship.

Science libraries need to combine traditional and emerging service models, provide access to a wide array of materials, incorporate appropriate technology, and offer ergonomic work spaces to promote effective learning.

The career of an athlete may shape the narrative that the media uses when writing articles on that player when they retire. Many people fail to understand how the media constructs articles the way they do on Major League Baseball (MLB) players upon retirement. This research study used a mixed method approach to show how the media covers certain professional MLB players when they retire. The researcher counted how many times chosen variables were mentioned in two different articles of sixteen retired MLB players, and then extracted quotes from those articles. This research paper aims to examine the different components of electronic books (e-books) and print books, and seeks to illuminate the ways in which reading retention is affected by each format. Using the data from studies conducted on adult readers, this paper examines how humans process information read from a text; the positive and negative impacts of e-books; whether or not digital natives are affected in the same way by e-readers; and suggestions publishing houses might take considering these findings and the future development of technology.

This paper explores how knowledge workers face uncertainties in the job market and how workers sustain a decades-long career in the midst of technology changes and globalization pressures. In particular, this paper asks how knowledge workers self-assess knowledge gaps, discover appropriate learning opportunities, demonstrate mastery, and promote credentials across decades-long careers. Interviews with 8 knowledge workers in educational publishing, an industry undergoing workforce changes due to market disruption, provides real-world context to this research question. While works of fiction allow for a great deal of flexibility and creativity, they are, for the most part, narratives written for an audience unfamiliar with the characters and world contained within. Nonfiction on the other hand comes in a variety of forms, from narrative nonfiction, to instruction-based texts, to peer-reviewed research. The audience for nonfiction varies more significantly, too, from a general public with no assumed knowledge of a subject to experts in a field wanting to further their skills.
