This paper explores the influence of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani on political developments in Iraq in the post-Saddam Husayn era and examines the discourse surrounding Sistani regarding his perceived activism or “quietism” with respect to political matters. The doctrine and statements of this most prominent Shi’i religious leader are analyzed and interpreted in the context of Iraq’s contemporary, often violent, history. Specifically, Sistani’s public statements during the run-up to the 2010 parliamentary elections and their aftermath are examined for the extent to which his voice resonates among the Iraqi people. Many of the international, supranational, national, and grassroots development organizations working in the field of education channel their efforts into professional development for teachers. This type of cross-cultural educational development occurs on a massive scale, but the amount of scholarly critique and engagement are disproportionately small. As part of a larger study, this chapter on transnational teacher education draws upon development studies and critical and Indigenous decolonizing methodologies for its theoretical frame. This study achieved a group of objectives including the measuring of the impact of the EU’s decisions on trust-based, nationalism-based, and religion-based Euro-skepticism, as well as Euro-skepticism in general, by conducting content analysis of statements made by some elite members of a peripheral Turkish religious party, the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi, SP).The hypotheses were tested at two independent events (one on December 17, 2004 and the other on October 03, 2005). This article explores the “Great Speech” Nutuk, delivered in 1927 by Turkey’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. In analyzing Nutuk and its rhetorical features, we identify the mythic underpinnings Atatürk employed to construct a modern “Turkish people.” We use this case to further our understanding of the constitutive discourses of nationalism. We believe Atatürk’s Nutuk provides a profitable discourse to think with as we attempt to understand Muslim nations and their negotiation of modernity.

This paper examines the relationship between nationalism and public opinion in the region of Catalonia in contemporary Spain. It analyzes the interaction of the climate of opinion, expectations, poll results, and political action. This holistic approach permits a conclusion that successive Catalan governments and the political class, in an effort to solidify their foothold in and emerging democracy, have been successful in creating a climate of opinion that has encouraged the nationalist part of the Catalan population, concentrated proportionally in highest socioeconomic strata, to be actively involved in politics, while at the same time demobilizing a significant part of the …

Transmitting Relational Worldviews: The Relationship Between Mother-Daughter Memorable Messages And Adult Daughters’ Romantic Relational Schemata, Jody Koenig Kellas

This study investigates memorable messages that daughters report hearing from their mothers about romantic relationships to examine the development of meaning in the content of parent-child communication and the ways in which these messages may affect and reflect adult daughters’ relational worldviews. Findings from a study involving 149 adult daughters revealed 4 supra-categories of memorable messages: value self, characteristics of a good relationship, warnings, and value the sanctity of love. Moreover, statistical analyses reveal that memorable message types significantly related to daughter’s romantic relationship schemata as operationalized by Fitzpatrick’s (1988) couple types. Both message and couple type predicted intergenerational transmission.

According to the renowned Mayo Clinic, having a low self-image can lead people to suffer harmful: physical, emotional, and behavioral consequences. Much of women’s selfimage is reliant on comparing themselves to the media’s perception of beauty. In an effort to bolster American women’s self-esteem, a workshop is proposed to explore the relation between portrayal of unconventional models on television shows and women’s/viewer’s self-image.

The Absolute Poison exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, delved into the fascinating and deadly world of poisons. From the ancient Sumerian goddess Gula, to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and the infamous cyanide-laced Tylenol case of 1982, poisons have long held a place in our collective imagination. The exhibit explored the history, symbolism, and cultural impact of poisons, featuring materials such as Albrecht Dürer’s Adam and Eve with its skull and crossbones motif symbolizing death. On display from September 2010 to August 2011 at the UNM Domenici Center, the exhibit examined how poisons have shaped narratives of danger and mystery. September …

DiMeo compares the interpretations of realism by the leading Arabic author of socially committed fiction to the theories of Bertolt Brecht and György Lukács. The early works of novelist Najib Mahfouz feature a Lukácsian approach, embracing critical realism to present a totalizing view of the social system, as experienced by credible, sympathetic characters.
