Integrated Geophysical Modeling Of Newly Identified Pseudofaults Within Southern Cascadia Subduction Zone, Morgan R. Madsen
Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)
The Cascadia Subduction Zone, located off the western coast of North America, has a long history of seismic activity, causing various geohazards such as megathrust earthquakes and tsunamis for the coastal population (Goldfinger et al., 2000; Tréhu et al., 2022). It is necessary to identify areas of greater risk, as seismic hazards will continue to affect the area due to ongoing subduction of the oceanic Juan de Fuca plate beneath the North American continent. Heavily fractured, weakened zones of oceanic crust, known as propagator wakes and pseudofaults, have been shown to correlate with greater seismicity (Ashraf and Filina, 2023a). Propagator …

Coastal Erosion In Ireland, Brian Nguyen, Jeanne Sumrall
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Ireland's approach to managing its coastlines focuses more on a short-term solution method rather than long-term, eco-friendly solutions. Their coastal defenses are created upon an immediate need without clear policies and sufficient research. As a result, beach ecosystems are frequently damaged, and the erosion is only reduced to a certain extent. To reduce erosion and protect both the environment and Irish culture, this study suggests that Ireland should implement national policies focused on regularly monitoring coastal erosion, researching nature-based solutions, and implementing them to address the problem. Moving forward, it’s important for research to focus on understanding the overall impact …

New Petrographic And Geochemical Constraints On Pre-Eruptive Storage Conditions And Their Control On Eruptive Styles In Martinique’S Recent Volcanic Systems, Abigail Martens
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates the volcanic systems of Martinique Island, focusing on magma storage conditions, magmatic evolution, and eruption dynamics. Chapter 3 presents a petrographic analysis of volcanic rocks from the island’s old, intermediate, and recent arcs, examining the evolution of plagioclase textures and the increasing abundance of other mineral phases, such as pyroxene, amphibole, olivine, and quartz, which provide insights into changing magmatic conditions. The main research is divided into two projects. Chapter 4 addresses the pre-eruptive storage conditions (pressure and temperature) of magmas beneath recent (<5 Ma) volcanic complexes (Morne Jacob, Piton du Carbet, Trois Îlets, Mt. Conil, and Mt. Pelée), exploring magma evolution, crystallization, and the role of lower crustal injections and flank collapses in triggering eruptions. Results reveal variable magma storage depths (<6 km), with significant temperature and pressure variations, indicating complex magmatic systems. Chapter 5 focuses on the Roches-Genty ignimbrite in southwestern Martinique, investigating its stratigraphy, geochemistry, and age using field mapping, grain size analysis, and 40Ar/39Ar dating. The study identifies two distinct sub-Plinian eruptive phases associated with the Dizac ignimbrite, with ages of 3.37 ± 0.14 Ma and 2.10 ± 0.26 Ma, providing insights into past explosive volcanic activity. Geochemical analysis confirms an andesitic composition, similar to regional volcanic systems. This dissertation enhances understanding of Martinique’s volcanic history, providing valuable insights into magmatic processes and eruption dynamics, with implications for volcanic hazard assessments in the Lesser Antilles.

The Pleistocene period significantly contributed to the formation of alluvial aquifer worldwide. These productive aquifers are crucial for domestic, industrial, and agricultural water supplies. The Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA), a principal aquifer in the U.S., is crucial for national food security and global agricultural supply. This study aims to characterize the subsurface architecture of the MRVA, thereby enhancing fundamental understanding of sedimentological processes involved in the genesis of glacio-fluvial aquifers worldwide. The research objectives are threefold: (1) to provide a detailed characterization of the MRVA; (2) to develop 3D geostatistical methods for geological modeling; and (3) to develop …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent organic chemicals found in numerous industrial applications and everyday products. The excessive amounts of PFASs in water and soil, together with their link to severe health issues, have prompted substantial public concerns, making their removal from the environment a necessity. Existing degradation techniques are frequently lacking due to their low efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and potential for secondary contamination. Cold Atmospheric Plasma (CAP) technology has emerged as a promising alternative, utilizing energized reactive species to break down PFASs under ambient conditions. Therefore, this review examines the efficacy and effectiveness of CAP in degrading PFASs by …

Evaluating Biotic Effecrs Associated With The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum In Mississippi And Alabama: A Palynological And Biostratigraphic Study Of Amoco's Legacy Samples, Sarah Fortin Bancroft
LSU Master's Theses
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) was a ~200 ka period of rapid global warming in the earliest Eocene (~56 Ma) involving a roughly 7 °C rise in atmospheric and sea-surface temperatures. The Gulf of Mexico Wilcox Group contains very well-preserved terrestrial and deltaic sediments that contain exploitable hydrocarbons . The Wilcox Group’s Paleocene Tuscahoma and Eocene Hatchetigbee Formations have been roughly dated with calcareous and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages by AMOCO; however, the precise ages of these formations, their palynological assemblages, and their paleo-depositional geosystems are an area of active research.
Through a high-resolution palynological analysis, this study assesses the depositional …

Glacial Isostatic Adjustments And Their Impact On Sea-Level Predictions, Dayne M. Williams, Jeanne Sumrall
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Relative sea level adjustments and their effects directly contribute to modern day climate change and ocean knowledge. This is shown through Glacial isostatic adjustment models which depend on ice thickness, time period, and core analyzations within a local region. These models demonstrate a direct correlation between RSL, era of retreat, and ice thickness even with comparison of other similar models, with some minor discrepancies. These discoveries led to several new advancements within the field of glaciology regionally and nationally. Generally concluding that the research done isn’t sufficient and more data regionally is needed to study its impacts more detailed.

Understanding the cave’s ventilation system is important for determining how the cavity interacts with external airflow. This requires a well-designed monitoring system. This article addresses these key aspects: how to build a monitoring system for cave air parameters and how to assess the ventilation of a cave. We proposed a flowchart to help address the issues in: 1) the modularity of a monitoring system, 2) the use of “homemade device” or “ready to use device”, 3) the frequency of measure and its effect on the electrical consumption, 4) the duration of the survey, and 5) the accessibility of the recorded …

Searching for land refugia becomes imperative for human survival during the hypothetical sixth mass extinction. Studying past comparable crises can offer insights, but there is no fossil evidence of diverse megafloral ecosystems surviving the largest Phanerozoic biodiversity crisis. Here, we investigated palynomorphs, plant, and tetrapod fossils from the Permian-Triassic South Taodonggou Section in Xinjiang, China. Our fossil records, calibrated by a high-resolution age model, reveal the presence of vibrant regional gymnospermous forests and fern fields, while marine organisms experienced mass extinction. This refugial vegetation was crucial for nourishing the substantial influx of surviving animals, thereby establishing a diverse terrestrial ecosystem …

Arkansas' subtropical climate nurtures extensive forested regions, particularly within the Ozark-St. Francis and Ouachita National Forests. Despite this, the state lacks an up-to-date high-resolution map detailing the distribution of tree species within its forests. This study harnesses the power of machine learning, specifically the Random Forest (RF), Gradient Tree Boosting (GTB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN) classifiers, within the Google Earth Engine (GEE) framework. These classifiers are applied to classify tree species distribution in Arkansas' forests by integrating data from various sources, including Sentinel-1/-2, Landsat-8, and the National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP). The study evaluates the classification …

Characterizing Lava Flow Morphology And Lava Flow Dynamics: A High-Resolution Lidar And Structure From Motion Study Of The Hell’S Half Acre Lava Flow, Idaho, Rachel T. Bakowski
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Basaltic lava flow eruptions can impact vast areas, profoundly altering the landscape. Although many past eruptions have gone unobserved by scientists, they often leave behind substantial deposits that preserve key elements of the eruption’s history. By studying lava textures and the overall structure of lava flows, we can reconstruct the specific conditions that occurred during the eruption and contributed to the final morphology of the lava flows. Hell’s Half Acre is a large, well-preserved basaltic lava flow in the Eastern Snake River Plain, containing a variety of significant geological features resulting from its distinctive eruption history. This thesis examines a …

At the end of the Cretaceous, the massive Deccan trap (DT) volcanic eruptions are regarded as the primary driver of global climate deterioration. Accurate age models are key to unravel the sequence of events related to DT volcanism onset and effects on the global climate system. We establish a direct geochemical link between DT volcanism as recorded in marine osmium isotopic data and global climate change documented in benthic foraminifera carbon and oxygen isotope records. Based on our state-of-the-art astronomically calibrated age model, two major shifts in marine 187Os/188Os at 66.49 and 66.28 million years ago are …

Modern microbialites grow in a variety of environments including the hypersaline, turbid, low alkalinity, high magnesium (Mg) and calcium (Ca) concentrations (and Mg/Ca ∼ 4.5 mol/mol), shallow (less than 2 m deep) Storr's Lake on San Salvador Island, The Bahamas. Rather than growing via the trapping and binding of sediments, these largely micritic microbialites form via microbial processes creating crusts and mounds with laminated to clotted structures comprised of both high-Mg calcite and aragonite. The primary objective of this study was to determine whether the mineralogy of representative microbialite mounds dictates their pre-burial metal isotopic compositions. The Mg and Ca …

The Nicoya region in northwestern Costa Rica contains a rich record of Upper Cretaceous fossiliferous sediments, which have received variable levels of study over the past several decades. In particular, rudists from these deposits have been well-characterized, however, the non-rudist ammonite, gastropod, and bivalve fauna have received much less attention. However, this area is particularly important because the Nicoya region was attached to the southernmost tip of North America, making it a unique crossroad between the western Tethys (Caribbean) and Pacific Oceans. Here I present a detailed investigation of these rocks and their fauna between the Late Campanian to Early …

Report of Investigations--KGS
Physics based landslide modeling can be difficult and data intensive. Generating high quality and practical map results is often not feasible outside of small, thoroughly characterized study areas. Using the physics based program Probabilistic Infinite Slope Analysis (PISA m), users can perform expedient assessments of landslide hazard over large study areas where comprehensive geotechnical data may be lacking, but other data inputs are robust. PISA m uses an infinite slope equation and spatial layers, such as a digital elevation model (DEM), a lidar derived forest cover layer, and a soil map, to calculate the probability that the factor of safety …

The city of Fez in northern Morocco is situated on northeastern parts of the Saïs Plain, an alluvial basin. It is spreading southwesterly onto Pleistocene sediments consisting primarily of alluvial, channel-fill conglomerates and overbank deposits, as well as Holocene tufas. As urban develop- ment expands, human activities are increasingly eradicating these deposits, about which little is known. This study focuses on the clay-mineral composition of these Pleistocene overbank de- posits, informally known as the “Red” and “Yellow” units, as well as of the Holocene tufas. In contrast to previous research that has emphasized the industrial uses of nearby Miocene marls. …

Easternmost Limit Of Sevier Orogeny, East-Central Utah Revisited, Kenneth R. Neuhauser
SACAD: Scholarly Activities
Integrative field mapping combined with published and unpublished seismic profiles, support an inferred, easternmost limit of Sevier thrusting during Late Cretaceous foreland deformation in east-central Utah. East-verging thrust faults, drag folds, and chatter marks within Jurassic and Late-Cretaceous exposures at Ketobe Knob along the western margin of Cedar Mountain in the northwestern and central parts of the San Rafael Swell and within the western zone of the Colorado Plateau provide evidence for a more easterly expression of the Sevier Thrust Front. Offset is accomplished by bedding-parallel slippage along less competent shales and siltstones and by oblique ramping across more competent …
