The Formation Of Glacier Dirt Cones, Ryan M. Strickland, Matthew D. Covington 2025 University of St Andrews

The Formation Of Glacier Dirt Cones, Ryan M. Strickland, Matthew D. Covington

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Glacier dirt cones are meter-scale cones of ice covered with sediment and rock. The cones develop through a process known as differential melt, whereby ice underlying thick debris melts more slowly than bare ice. We report observations of dirt cones on the Kuskulana Glacier, Alaska and develop a model that simulates the growth of dirt cones from debris-filled pits in the ice. With this model, we vary ice melt rates, hillslope debris diffusion rates and pit geometry. Cone heights scale with the square root of debris volume and growth occurs in three distinct stages: emergence, flux-controlled growth and melt-controlled growth. …

Inconsistencies With The Drumian Carbon Isotope Excursion (Dice) In West-Central Utah, Michelle Norman 2025 Utah State University

Inconsistencies With The Drumian Carbon Isotope Excursion (Dice) In West-Central Utah, Michelle Norman

Student Research Symposium

Geologic Setting

  • During the Cambrian Period (539-485.4Ma), the western US was submerged by a shallow ocean
  • Carbon cycle fluctuations in stable carbon were preserved in marine sediments
  • One such period of geologic time, the Drumian Age (500Ma), is defined by the first appearance of a deepwater trilobite, P. atavus, in west-central Utah
  • Researchers have hypothesized we can find Drumian-aged rocks without the fossils using carbon cycle fluctuations preserved in limestone
  • the Drumian Carbon Isotope Excursion (DICE) is defined as a -2.5‰ fluctuation in global carbon-bearing rocks

08 - Blue Carbon Sequestration And Sediment Storage In Seagrass Meadows Of South Bay, Luke C. Clements, Adriana Amrhein, Richard P. Hale

Undergraduate Research Symposium

Blue carbon is stored in coastal and marine ecosystems like seagrass meadows and salt marshes, which helps combat climate change by preventing greenhouse gas emissions. This study examines the role of seagrass in carbon storage by comparing sediment cores from a mud channel and a seagrass meadow in South Bay.

We collected a 100 cm core from the mud channel and a 55 cm core from the seagrass area, taking samples every 10 cm to analyze grain size and organic carbon content. Using a wet sieving method, we separated sand from mud and measured organic carbon through loss on ignition. …

Palynological Analysis To Interpret Inputs And Paleoenvironmental Conditions Of Tidal Flat Sediments In The Wouri Estuary, Rahmatoulaye Thialaw Diop, Fatou Penda Cisse, Maguette Ka, Onema Adojoh, Henry Agbogun 2025 Fort Hays State University

Palynological Analysis To Interpret Inputs And Paleoenvironmental Conditions Of Tidal Flat Sediments In The Wouri Estuary, Rahmatoulaye Thialaw Diop, Fatou Penda Cisse, Maguette Ka, Onema Adojoh, Henry Agbogun

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

This study examines the environmental significance of microfossils in specifically pollens, spore and cuticles in understanding paleoenvironment and sediments inputs in Tidal flats in the tropical Wouri estuary. Palynological slides of sediments from different depths with two sediment cores from the east and Western flanks of the Wouri estuary were examined using a trinocular microscope. Results showed the predominance of pollens families of Rhizophoraceae and Poaceae at different depths. Cuticles also varied with depth in both the West and east Wouri sediments cores. The Rhizophoraceae family are interpreted to indicate coastal and mangrove environment inputs into the sediments of the …

Geology Of Nacogdoches, Texas : Geogulf 2025, R. Larell Nielson

Faculty Publications

Nacogdoches and East Texas are geologically interesting places to live and work. This field trip will visit the locations indicated on the maps below (Figures 1 and 2). Our location is on the Sabine Uplift and is east of the East Texas Salt Dome Basin (Figure 3 and 4). The first producing oil well in Texas was drilled near Woden by Taliaferro Barret in 1866 at a depth of 106 feet, producing about 10 barrels a day from the Sparta Sand (Figures 5 and 6). Stratigraphic units that we will see are: Sparta Sand, Weches Formation, Queen City Sand, Reklaw …

Study Of Falāj Pathways And Their Unknown Extension In Al Ain City Using Geophysical Methods, Saud Mohammed Alsenaani 2025 United Arab Emirates University

Study Of Falāj Pathways And Their Unknown Extension In Al Ain City Using Geophysical Methods, Saud Mohammed Alsenaani

Theses

Historically, the city of Al Ain has relied on its Falāj systems as historic water resources for freshwater, which is vital for drinking and irrigating its oases and essential for supporting life in the region for centuries, providing the foundation for communities and farming. The remarkable rainfall in 2024 uncovered several hidden ancient Falāj systems and newly enlarged versions of previously recorded ones, highlighting the importance of ongoing research for their preservation. This research project aims to examine the current Falāj systems in Al Ain, particularly Falāj Mezyad, using geophysical methods to identify uncharted extensions and to examine current Falāj …

Oxygen Depletion In Lake Waters May Skew Brgdgt‐ Inferred Temperatures By More Than 10°C, Jonathon H. Raberg, Gregory A. de Wet, Áslaug Geirsdóttir, Julio Sepúlveda, Gifford H. Miller 2025 University of Wyoming

Oxygen Depletion In Lake Waters May Skew Brgdgt‐ Inferred Temperatures By More Than 10°C, Jonathon H. Raberg, Gregory A. De Wet, Áslaug Geirsdóttir, Julio Sepúlveda, Gifford H. Miller

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Abstract Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (brGDGT) paleothermometry is an important tool for paleoclimate research. Oxygen availability has been suggested to skew brGDGT‐inferred temperatures, but the effect is poorly constrained. Here, we examine the influence of dissolved oxygen (DO) on brGDGTs in lacustrine water filtrates. By examini10.1029/2024GL113562ng three subgroups of samples collected within narrow temperature ranges, we more effectively isolate the influence of DO. We find significant correlations between DO and the MBT′5Me temperature index in all three constant‐temperature subgroups. Underlying shifts in key brGDGT abundances indicate the problem is likely to manifest in virtually all existing calibrations. The effects …

Monitoring Sand Migration In Al Ain City Utilizing Remote Sensing Techniques, Sanad Salem Mohammad Fareaa 2025 United Arab Emirates University

Monitoring Sand Migration In Al Ain City Utilizing Remote Sensing Techniques, Sanad Salem Mohammad Fareaa

Theses

Sand migration significantly impacts urban development, infrastructure, and ecosystems in arid regions such as Al Ain city, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study employs advanced remote sensing techniques to monitor and predict sand dune migration across the Sieh Al Hama dune field, a critical area west of Al Ain. The research objectives include quantifying dune migration rates over three years (2018–2020) using monthly Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, identifying distinct dune fields, and analyzing the textural and mineralogical properties of dune sediments to infer their provenance. Field sampling from four dunes (Large Sabra Dune, Dune 1, Dune 2, and Dune 3) was …

Biogenic Modification Of Tidally Modified Substrates From The Micro- To Macroscopic Scale, Rogers Clark Caldwell Buntin Ii

OES Theses and Dissertations

Digital outcrop models generated by high-resolution photogrammetric imagery permit investigations into organism-substrate interactions at the centimeter to sub-millimeter scale. This dissertation uses this three-dimensional technology to study two sedimentary successions— the Archaean Dresser Formation and Cretaceous Dakota Sandstone— by capturing images via unmanned aircraft systems and single lens reflex cameras. The ~3.48 Ga Dresser Formation provides evidence for some of the earliest life on Earth in the form of stromatolites and microbially induced sedimentary structures. Aerial imagery of the 3.5 km2 Buick Geoheritage reserve capture the site’s geologic structures and close-range imagery documents stromatolites and several microbially induced sedimentary structures …
