We present molecular dynamics simulation evidence for a freezing transition from liquid silicon to quasi-twodimensional (quasi-2D) bilayer silicon in a slit nanopore. This new quasi-2D polymorph of silicon exhibits a bilayer hexagonal structure in which the covalent coordination number of every silicon atom is four. Quantum molecular dynamics simulations show that the stand-alone bilayer silicon (without the confinement) is still stable at 400 K. Electronic band-structure calculations suggest that the bilayer hexagonal silicon is a quasi-2D semimetal, similar to a graphene monolayer, but with an indirect zero band gap.

The binding interactions between aqueous copper (Cu2þ ) and lithium (Li þ ) ions and Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers have been investigated by studying surface pressure-area (Π-A) isotherms and surface potential-area (ΔV-A) behavior in order to find the effective dipole moment, μ^, of the calixarene molecules in the uncomplexed and complexed states. The orientation of both calix[4]arenes, namely, 5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butyl- 25,27-diethoxycarbonyl methyleneoxy-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene and 5,17-(9H-fluoren-2-yl)methyleneamino)- 11,23-di-tert-butyl-25,27-diethoxycarbonyl methyleneoxy-26,28-dihydroxycalix[4]arene, is such that the plane of the calix ring is parallel with the plane of the water surface regardless of the ion content of the subphase. The Gibbs equation was used to interpret …

The inclusion of zirconium precursors to prepare organosilane solgel coatings improves the corrosion protection performance of the coatings on aluminium and steel. The inherent differences in the hydrolysis rates of the silane and zirconium precursors, various ligands were used to control the hydrolysis by decreasing the number of reactive alkoxide group. Hybrid sols were synthesised using 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylmethacrylate (MAPTMS) and zirconium n-propoxide chelated with organic ligands including different organic acids, acetyl acetone and 2 2’ bipyridyl. The effects of zirconia inclusion on the properties of the coatings were compared on the aerospace alloy AA 2024-T3. Electrochemical analysis and salt spray …

Organic-inorganic polymers formed by hydrolysis/condensation reactions of alkoxide precursors, such as organically modified silanes (Ormosils) have found applications as electronic, optical and protective coatings. Such coatings possess important characteristics such as chemical stability, physical strength and scratch resistance. Further performance improvement is achieved through the incorporation of zirconium and titanium based nanoparticles, also formed through the sol-gel process. However due to the inherent difference in the reactivity of the precursors, the hydrolysis of each precursor must be carried out separately before being combined for final condensation. Zirconium precursors are commonly chelated using acetic acid or acetyl acetonate prior to hydrolysis, …

Articles
Silver nanoparticles were synthesised by a chemical reduction process in order to produce an aqueous colloidal dispersion. The resulting colloids were then characterised by a combination of UV-Vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy and the nanoparticles were found to have an average diameter of 20–22 nm. The Ag/polymer nanocomposites were then applied to platinum interdigital electrodes as sensor coatings and the capability of the resulting sensor as a humidity detector investigated. With the application of 1 V, a current developed which was found to be directly proportional to humidity levels. The sensor gives a reversible, …

Investigation Of Network Architecture Development And Properties In Thermoset Matrices, Jeremy Owen Swanson
Dissertations
Matrices employed in composite materials directly influence overall composite properties. In all thermoset materials, molecular level interactions and transformations during cure result in heterogeneous architecture. Variability in connectivity results from the often dramatic spatial and topological changes that occur during the crosslinking process. Compatibility (fillers, pigments, additives), temperature gradients and reactivity differences in the precursors only serve to increase the complexity of network formation. The objective of the research herein is to characterize and understand the relationships between cure conditions, conversion, connectivity, network architecture and properties in glassy thermosetting matrix resins.
In this research, epoxy and vinyl ester resins (VERs) …

Safe and cost-effective experiments were designed for high school students to enhance their laboratory skills and knowledge on polarity and separation of mixtures. Annatto, Spanish paprika and turmeric were extracted yielding red-orange, light red-orange and yellow color, respectively. These were combined with a blue aqueous solution made from food color resulting to green mixtures. These were all extracted with kerosene or oil/kerosene. The non-polar solutes for each mixture combined with the kerosene or oil/kerosene layer, making the polar phase blue again. Students gained a better understanding of the concepts as shown in their laboratory report and test results.

The growth mechanism, morphology, structure and optical properties of the ZnO nanostructures grown on bare and gold-coated silicon substrates using carbothermal reaction at atmospheric pressure were investigated under different growth conditions. The ZnO nanostructures formed were studied as a function of substrate location, furnace temperature, Ar gas flow rate, deposition time and ZnO powder to carbon powder mass ratio. The morphology and structure of the samples were characterized using the fieldemission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy(EDX) spectrum, x-ray diffraction (XRD) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). It was found that in both silicon and gold-coated silicon …

Silicon oxide nanostructures have attracted extensive interests in recent years due to their physical and optical properties. SiOx nanostructures are synthesized by catalytic and non-catalytic approaches. With catalytic approach, long and uniform amorphous silicon oxide nanowires, nanofibers (comet and tree like), nanocakes and nanocages were synthesized on Si substrate by carbothermal evaporation reactions of TiO2 at high temperature. The SiOx nanowires were about 13 nm to 243 nm in diameters and 194 nm to several microns in length and the nanofibres with diameter between 8 nm to 30 nm and around 50 nm to 2.5μm in length. The diameter and …
