Coatings that demonstrate reduced attachment of crystalline precipitates and the medical device colonising Staphylococcus epidermidis were prepared by the immobilisation of silver doped perfluoropolyether–urethane siloxane thin films on glass substrates. The presence of stratified hydrophobic perfluoropolyether groups protects the coating surface from the attachment of crystalline hydrophilic species such as chlorides and phosphates, whilst silver ion release inhibited attachment of S. epidermidis and subsequent biofilm formation in vitro. The release of silver ions protects the perfluoro groups from the hydrophobic interactions of S. epidermidis cells, which can reduce the hydrophobicity of the protective coating. These coatings also exhibited significant antibacterial …

Microscopic Formulation Of The Zimm-Bragg Model For The Helix-Coil Transition, A. V. Badasyan, A. Giacometti, Y. S. Mamasakhlisov, V. F. Morozov, Albert S. Benight

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A microscopic spin model is proposed for the phenomenological Zimm-Bragg model for the helix-coil transition in biopolymers. This model is shown to provide the same thermophysical properties of the original Zimm-Bragg model and it allows a very convenient framework to compute statistical quantities. Physical origins of this spin model are made transparent by an exact mapping into a one-dimensional Ising model with an external field. However, the dependence on temperature of the reduced external field turns out to differ from the standard one-dimensional Ising model and hence it gives rise to different thermophysical properties, despite the exact mapping connecting them. …

Elucidation Of Fragmentation Pathways Of Nitrile-Terminated Ppi Dendrimer-Metal Complexes, Kristen Nicole Pack 2010 Marshall University

Elucidation Of Fragmentation Pathways Of Nitrile-Terminated Ppi Dendrimer-Metal Complexes, Kristen Nicole Pack

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The complexity of branching macromolecules around a core unit, such as poly(propylene)imine (PPI) dendrimers, has caught the attention of researchers for several years1,2,3,4,5. The structural framework of the core unit for these dendrimers is simply 1,4- diaminobutane. As the synthesis of higher-order generations of the macromolecule progresses, the molecules become very complex and tightly woven, but have predictable geometries and properties. The PPI dendrimers can be functionalized at the terminal ends of the branches in order to elicit different properties. The PPI dendrimer examined in this project has been terminated with a nitrile group rather than the usual …

Two-Dimensional To Three-Dimensional Structural Transition Of Gold Cluster Au 10 During Soft Landing On Tio 2 Surface And Its Effect On Co Oxidation, Hui Li, Yong Pei, Xiao Cheng Zeng

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

We investigate the possible structural transition of a planar Au10 cluster during its soft landing on a TiO2 (110) surface with or with no oxygen defects. The collision between the gold cluster and the oxide surface is simulated using the Car–Parrinello quantum molecular dynamics method. Both high-speed and low-speed conditions typically implemented in soft-landing experiments are simulated. It is found that under a high-speed condition, the gold cluster Au10 can undergo a sequence of structural transitions after colliding with a defect-free TiO2 (110) surface. When the TiO2 (110) surface possesses oxygen vacancies, however, chemical bonds …

Particle Matter Measurements For Inspection/Maintenance Programs, Daniel Joseph Pope 2010 University of Denver

Particle Matter Measurements For Inspection/Maintenance Programs, Daniel Joseph Pope

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Particle emissions from Heavy Duty Diesel Vehicles (HDDVs) are currently measured by opacity or dynamometer gravimetric analysis. The Electronic Tailpipe Particle Sensor (ETaPS) is an inexpensive measurement device purported to give real time response to particle mass and was proposed as a possible addition to Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) programs. There were three goals to this study. The first was to verify ETaPS response to particle mass of HDDV exhaust. Integrated ETaPS signal was plotted against filter weight from dynamometer gravimetric analysis and a correlation was found. The second goal was to find a correlation between ETaPS readings and the Remote Sensing …
