The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Well-Being Of People Incarcerated In United States Prisons, Kimberly Rivera
The Impact Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On The Well-Being Of People Incarcerated In United States Prisons, Kimberly Rivera
Department of Sociology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the population as a whole. However, the incarcerated population (which also experiences a variety of health disparities) has been disproportionately affected by the pandemic. Due to overcrowding, poor ventilation, and lack of resources, the incarcerated population already is at a heightened risk for negative health outcomes, made worse by the recent pandemic. To adapt to the rapidly changing conditions during the pandemic in 2020 and into 2022, new safety measures were implemented, but the unintended consequences associated with the implementation of these procedures have yet to be examined empirically. I conducted a qualitative content …

Developing And Validating A Measure Of Team Coordination Using Unobtrusive Data: The Radsm Process, Alexxa Bessey
Developing And Validating A Measure Of Team Coordination Using Unobtrusive Data: The Radsm Process, Alexxa Bessey
All Dissertations
Within the domain of team processes, ample research has utilized subjective measures such as surveys and observations. However, subjective measures are often limited and may be prone to bias. Further, advances in technology have provided new data collection methodologies (e.g., wearables) in addition to increased access to data (e.g., email, chat). Despite such advances, there lacks a well-adopted systematic process to develop measures from systems based or unobtrusive data. As a result, the purpose of the current study was to develop a measure of team coordination utilizing a systematic process of unobtrusive measure development, the Rational Approach to Developing Systems-based …

Peer Evaluation Systems (PESs) allow members of student teams to provide one another with computer-mediated feedback in the form of qualitative, open-ended comments. The current research leverages unsupervised Natural Language Processing (NLP), namely Biterm Topic Modeling (BTM) and sentiment analysis, to uncover latent topics and degree of positivity and negativity expressed in peer feedback, respectively. BTM results revealed a 6-topic model that was reliably replicated over 10 Gibbs initializations 80% of the time. Topics were labeled Timely Communication, Idea Generation, Coordination & Adaptation, Work Quality, Team Support & Focusing, and Work Accountability. Qualitative comparison suggests that these topics demonstrate …

A Study Of Group Effectiveness In A Virtual Reality Environment., Dalton Clay Sparks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Virtual Reality (VR) technology has revolutionized the study of team effectiveness, yet many studies in this domain lack a comprehensive approach, focusing narrowly on performance metrics. This thesis investigates VR team effectiveness by integrating traditional Team Effectiveness frameworks with VR-specific dynamics. Utilizing Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Group Style Inventory (GSI), this study assesses teams within a VR environment, specifically a multiplayer submarine simulation game, IronWolfVR. Fifteen groups, totaling 45 participants, were observed for their collaborative gameplay, incorporating physiological measures (Heart Rate and Electrodermal Activity), team coordination dynamics, and various survey-based assessments (demographics, System Usability Scale, Simulator Sickness Questionnaire, and …

Nurses - Tab Down Your Stress Level: A Pilot Study On The Use Of Aromatherapy To Decrease Stress Levels, Judith E. Bowling, Ashley N. Garbutt, Theresa Worden, Julie Erickson, Nicole Rowney
Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal
Introduction: The average day-to-day nursing profession is a stressful one. The job often requires dealing with patients enduring some of the worst times of their lives, as well as contending with patients' emotional family members. This stressful environment is heightened even more for nurses employed in critical access hospitals (CAHs) due to the limited resources usually associated with these smaller facilities. Methods: Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council members at one CAH explored how to help nurses deal with the elevated work stress level. Aromatherapy tabs were used as an intervention to reduce nurses' stress. The nurses who participated in this …

Toxic Leadership And Its Effect On Employees' Subjective Well-Being, Vaishnavi Waldiya
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Toxic leadership is an area of growing interest. The goal of my study was to investigate toxic leadership and how toxic leader behaviors relate to employee outcomes. Part of my goal was to examine the role of toxic leadership (taking other factors such as burnout, and workplace incivility) and how toxic leadership and other variables contribute to an employee's subjective well-being. Hence, the goal of this study was to examine the following effects: Toxic leadership behaviors and their effects on subjective well-being of the employee; and b) mediating roles of incivility and burnout on toxic leader behavior and the employee’s …
Charter For Smarter Hats: How Team Charters Dynamically Improve Trust And Emotions In Human-Agent Teams, Dan Manh Nguyen
Charter For Smarter Hats: How Team Charters Dynamically Improve Trust And Emotions In Human-Agent Teams, Dan Manh Nguyen
Theses and Dissertations
Although human-agent teams have received significant attention from both practitioners and researchers in recent years, human attitudes and emotions towards agents present collaborative barriers that reduce effective teaming. Borrowing from literature on traditional human team interventions, this study examines how team charters may be leveraged to set up better trust relationships and emotional states over time, and how these key emergent states influence both objective performance scores and subjective performance ratings. Using data from 43 individuals who participated in a search-and-rescue simulation with four agent teammates, discontinuous growth modeling was used to examine differences in trust and upsetness over time …

Organizational Commitment, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What is organizational commitment?
Organizational commitment, along with job satisfaction, is one of the most commonly studied job attitudes within the psychological sciences and is often used to gauge how employees feel about their job. Research on organizational commitment has largely been a fragmented endeavor, with no clear consensus on what organizational commitment actually is or how it should be conceptualized. To date, there is not one definition that is regarded as the best, but there are some common themes that can be seen throughout the many definitions in existence. For example, most definitions refer to organizational commitment in terms …
Job Satisfaction, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Job Satisfaction, Sarah Stepanek, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What is job satisfaction?
Job satisfaction is generally thought of as the degree to which an individual likes or dislikes their job (Spector, 1997). Along with organizational commitment, it is one of the most commonly studied job attitudes and is used as a way to gauge how employees feel about their jobs and as a reflection of how well the organization is functioning. Job satisfaction is commonly considered as either “a global feeling about the job or as a related constellation of attitudes about various aspects or facets of the job” (Spector, 1997, p. 2). Thus, job satisfaction is …
Implicit Trait Policies And Situational Judgment Tests: How Personality Shapes Judgments Of Effective Behavior, Alexander Edward Johnson
Implicit Trait Policies And Situational Judgment Tests: How Personality Shapes Judgments Of Effective Behavior, Alexander Edward Johnson
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
The Situational Judgment Test (SJT) is a popular selection tool used by employers to
make hiring decisions due to their strong predictive validity. SJTs present job candidates with
hypothetical scenarios, asking them to choose the responses that best fit those situations. SJTs
have been used to measure a range of knowledge, skills, and abilities, but what they measure and
why they predict performance remains unclear. Lievens and Motowidlo (2016) called for a
reframing of the SJT as a measure of general domain knowledge. According to their theory, SJTs
measure procedural knowledge, which is composed of general domain knowledge—
operationalized as …

Each QIC-WD site developed a logic model to serve as a visual representation of their selected intervention. All logic models included four main components: inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. Collectively, these demonstrate the resource and actions required to implement the program, as well as the associated result of changes anticipated through implementation of the program. The hypothesized relationships are represented by the pathways connecting the listed activities and anticipated outcomes.

Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld
Examining The Evidence Base For Burnout, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Schonfeld
Publications and Research
Burnout has elicited growing interest among occupational health specialists in recent decades. Since 2019, the World Health Organization has characterized burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic, unmanageable workplace stress. Accordingly, three symptoms define the entity: (i) feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; (ii) increased mental distance from one’s job or feelings of negativism or cynicism towards one’s job; and (iii) a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment. We call into question the definition of burnout embodied in the Maslach Burnout Inventory and incorporated into the ICD-11. We draw stakeholders’ attention to the fact that burnout’s symptoms and etiology …

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. …

Psychological Research on Urban Society
Society 5.0 is a concept of society that must humanize humans with technology. If the industrial revolution 4.0 makes humans more modern because they have access to technology, then society 5.0 is a time where technology becomes part of humans. Industrial revolution 5.0 employees are more focused on being prepared to think critically, analytically and creatively to adapt in the future. Therefore, this research aims to test the construct validity of the workforce agility measurement tool. To test the psychometric characteristics of this research, researchers will use an item response theory approach with the Rasch model. In this research, data …

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a rapidly expanding field in Psychology, but the term has often been interpreted too broadly, frequently being equated with good character or social skills, such as personality traits. However, EI should be understood as the ability of individuals to react effectively to others based on the emotional information. The purpose of this study is to explore the plausibility of indirectly measuring emotional intelligence as an ability through an Artificial Intelligence chatbot. This chatbot extracts various textual features from users’ free-text responses collected during online conversations and employs machine-learning algorithms to infer emotional intelligence scores that will …

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference
The purpose of this study was to contribute to the understanding of how job stressors, specifically, challenge-hindrance (C-H) stressors, can negatively impact employee turnover. C-H stressors can be defined as perceptions of a work environment related to level of demands in such that challenge stressors (e.g., responsibility, job complexity, etc.) are viewed as potential opportunities for growth or mastery and hindrance stressors (e.g., conflict, ambiguity, etc.) are viewed as potential constraints or barriers to one’s goal or growth (Zhang et al., 2014). The hypotheses guiding this study were that (a) challenge and (b) hindrance stressors at Time 1 would positively …
