How Do Individual And Parental Work Centrality Attitudes And Social Support Impact Young Adults’ Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment At Work?, Jenna Kriegh, Judith Van Hein, Alexander T. Jackson, Patrick Mccarthy

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

The #metoo movement has spurred women and men to come forward with their stories and claims of sexual harassment. In addition to older adults, young adults have experienced sexual harassment in a variety of settings. These may include school, work, or even on the street. Around 51% of women and 53% of men had experienced some form of unwanted sexually charged interaction in public places, like cat-calling, by the age of 17 (Kearl, 2014). The purpose of the study is to examine how young adults perceive sexually harassing behaviors at work. I examine how these perceptions are influenced by one’s …

The Measure Of Adaptive Performance (Map) Scale: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis With Law Enforcement Officers, Courtney Allen, Mark Frame Oct 2018

The Measure Of Adaptive Performance (Map) Scale: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis With Law Enforcement Officers, Courtney Allen, Mark Frame

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

This study attempted to validate the Measurement of Adaptive Performance (MAP) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on a group of law enforcement officials. The adaptability literature lacks construct clarity, so developing reliable and valid scales is a critical step toward conducting research that can answer important questions related to adaptability. Understanding employee adaptability would lead to better selection and retention practices because employers would have scientific information available to help them make better decisions about current and future employees. The results provide some evidence of the MAP model being a good fit for the data. Further research should be done …

Usage Of Credit Information In The Selection Process: A Unique Contribution, Mandy Matsumoto, Mark Frame, Patrick Mccarthy Oct 2018

Usage Of Credit Information In The Selection Process: A Unique Contribution, Mandy Matsumoto, Mark Frame, Patrick Mccarthy

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Using credit information for employee selection began around 1988, after polygraph tests for such purposes were banned. Organizations sought other methods that predicted employees’ behavior and gave insight into their honesty, responsibility and integrity. Since the early 1990s, credit information’s influence on hiring decisions has increased significantly. As of 2010, 47% of organizations use credit information for specific jobs, and 13% use them for all jobs (Bryan & Palmer, 2012). The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) reported that organizations screen for negative credit histories and use that information to impact their hiring decisions (Bryan & Palmer, 2012). Many organizations …

Finding A More Inclusive Workplace: Engaging Those With Low And High Functioning Autism, Kayle M. Wilson, Karly E. Gawarecki, Alaina C. Keim

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Autism Spectrum Disorder as a diagnosis is becoming more common than in past years. This results in a larger number of individuals attempting to enter the work force but facing challenges in the employment process. Organizations that hold social responsibility to high regards will be motivated to incorporate more ways to be inclusive. This study will examine specific jobs that would pair with lower and higher functioning individuals with ASD, alter the recruiting process to accommodate for a more inclusive environment, and focus on current employees to engage them in the change as well. This initiative will be an education …

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Angella Valencia, Alexandra Zelin Oct 2018

Does Gendered Language Have An Effect On You?, Angella Valencia, Alexandra Zelin

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Promoting gender equality has never been more relevant and important in today’s society. Language can be seen as a mirror of social structures (Matheson & Kristiansen, 1987). In the English language there is gendered language that is exclusively for males (e.g. he, him), exclusive for females (e.g. she, her), and gendered-neutral language (e.g. you, them). The gender-exclusive language uses on gendered-pronoun (he or she), yet refers to an opposite gender or gender-neutral description (e.g., fireman vs. firefighter). This study will evaluate how men’s and women’s (participants) perceptions of gender-exclusive versus gender-inclusive language by means of job advertisements affect their decision …

Examining How The Dark Triad Moderates The Relationship Between Workplace Victimization And Workplace Behavior, James Parker, Alexander T. Jackson, Michael Hein, Richard G. Moffett Iii

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

This study will examine the relationship between workplace victimization and workplace behavior. Furthermore, this study will examine how the Dark Triad of personality affects that relationship. The study will be conducted as a Masters’ Thesis at Middle Tennessee State University. We propose that the there is a positive relationship between workplace victimization and counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) and a negative relationship between workplace victimization and occupational citizenship behaviors (OCB). We also propose that the Dark Triad (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) each positively moderate the relationship between workplace victimization and CWB. Data on each of these constructs will be collected from …

Research Design Of Job Satisfaction In An East African Medical Research Center, Fransuave L. Moore, Emily P. Moody, Alexandra L. Wright, Malissa Clark

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

For years, I-O research has used surveys and scales to measure job satisfaction; however, a traditional survey may not always be the best option. Therefore, our research team utilized interviews as well as surveys to understand job satisfaction at the National Institute of Medical Research, Amani Centre (NIMR-AC). The Centre is in Muheza, Tanzania, a rural town one hour from the East African coast. We used a mixed methods approach with an aim to distinguish the key characteristics and variations of job satisfaction among the employees of NIMR-AC. The nature of the surveys, one-on-one interviews, and a focus group discussion …

Organizational Alignment Through Leadership Proficiency And Human System Interventions, Kristin Weger, Raeshaun Jones, Lisa Matsuyama, Michael Buford, Jarielle Prince, Sarah Rose Stough Oct 2018

Organizational Alignment Through Leadership Proficiency And Human System Interventions, Kristin Weger, Raeshaun Jones, Lisa Matsuyama, Michael Buford, Jarielle Prince, Sarah Rose Stough

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Across many organizations, agencies and programs have been tasked with building, training, and retaining the workforce needed. Yet, only few organizations have succeeded in their efforts by creating a culture in which workforce preferences align and overarching leadership support is provided. Such a cultural transformation requires not only a behavioral shift from employees, but especially from those in leadership positions, in order to break from the typical way that organizations have long encouraged them to behave. Although the importance of leadership has been emphasized in previous literature, no consistent description of leadership attributes or promising application of human system interventions …

Sexual Harassment Bystander Intervention Program: Targeting Leaders To Enhance Organizational Culture, Caitlin C. Meyer, Alexandra Zelin Oct 2018

Sexual Harassment Bystander Intervention Program: Targeting Leaders To Enhance Organizational Culture, Caitlin C. Meyer, Alexandra Zelin

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

Sexual harassment has become a prominent issue in workplaces and society as a whole. However, to effectively address the issue of sexual harassment and identify methods to reduce it in the workplace, it needs to be clearly defined and understood. Sexual harassment manifests in three forms which often overlap and are antecedents of one another: gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion (The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, NASEM, 2018). Gender harassment is the most common form of sexual harassment and is characterized by crude behavior, hostility, objectification, and exclusion rooted in the basis of gender (NASEM, …

Political Skill As A Predictor Of Performance And Work Relationship Quality, Christian Saenz, Kristen Jennings-Black Oct 2018

Political Skill As A Predictor Of Performance And Work Relationship Quality, Christian Saenz, Kristen Jennings-Black

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

This study investigates the relationship between political skill and multi-faceted job performance as well as work relationship quality. Political skill is “the ability to effectively understand others at work and to use such knowledge to influence others to act in ways that enhance one’s personal and/or organizational objectives” (Ferris, 2005, p. 127). Ferris (2005) specifically provided four underlying dimensions of political skill: networking ability, apparent sincerity, social astuteness, and interpersonal influence. Prior meta-analytic evidence supports a significant positive correlation between political skill and task performance (r = .26; Munyon et al., 2015). While the relationship with job performance has received …

After #Metoo: Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment In And Out Of The Workplace, Brittany Branda, Alexandra I. Zelin, Riley Tino Oct 2018

After #Metoo: Perceptions Of Sexual Harassment In And Out Of The Workplace, Brittany Branda, Alexandra I. Zelin, Riley Tino

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

The purpose of this study is to identify perceptions of sexual harassment in the workplace and non-workplace settings. Following the “Me Too” movement, the issue of what constitutes sexual harassment in workplace environments underwent intense speculation. Confusion about the behaviors that equate to sexual harassment not only delays making progress toward eliminating it, but risks the well-being of citizens, employees, and their organizations. Individuals who experience sexual harassment are thrust into states of psychological distress and are known to experience fear, negative moods, and a lowered satisfaction with life in general. Additionally, exhibiting behaviors of sexual harassment in the workplace …

Do Effective After-Action Reviews Lead To Better Performance?, Garrett Baber, Glenn Littlepage, Richard Moffett Iii Oct 2018

Do Effective After-Action Reviews Lead To Better Performance?, Garrett Baber, Glenn Littlepage, Richard Moffett Iii

River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference

After-action reviews (AARs) are meetings in which teams meet to recall, analyze, and set goals according to previous performance. Strong evidence indicates that the use AARs can enhance performance (Tannenbaum, Cerasoli, 2013; LePine, Piccolo, Jackson, Mathieu, Saul, 2008). However, these studies do not examine the relationship between quality of AAR performance and team task performance. The present study utilizes 25 teams operating a simulated airline and examines the relationship between performance during the AAR and both subsequent and previous task performance. The NASA Flight Operations Center – Unified Simulation (FOCUS) lab at Middle Tennessee State University emulates a high-fidelity flight …

Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Political Behavior Scale, Amanda Thomas Oct 2018

Development And Validation Of A Multidimensional Political Behavior Scale, Amanda Thomas

Dissertations

Years of research conducted into organizational politics has resulted in an expanded understanding of what politics “do” through the investigation of antecedents and outcomes (Lepisto & Pratt, 2012). The literature is somewhat deficient, however, in explaining and measuring what politics “are”. While there are numerous existing measures of organizational politics, the measurement and methodology in this area remains complex due to several issues. The existing literature notes design and measurement (Ferris, Adams, Kolodinsky, Hochwarter, & Ammeter, 2002; Nye & Witt, 1993), definitional (Gunn & Chen, 2006; Lepisto & Pratt, 2012), and level of analysis (Dipboye & Foster, 2006; Fedor & …

Qic-Wd Site Intervention Selection – Fall 2018, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development Oct 2018

Qic-Wd Site Intervention Selection – Fall 2018, Quality Improvement Center For Workforce Development

Other QIC-WD Products

The eight QIC-WD sites have worked with the QIC-WD to determined which intervention to implement and evaluate to strengthen their child welfare workforce. These decisions came after a thorough needs assessment through which human resources (HR) data was examined to uncover the root causes of child welfare caseworker turnover. The sites recognize that turnover is not caused by a single issue, so they had to consider which aspect of turnover they could address in partnership with the QIC-WD. The QIC-WD team simultaneously examined available interventions, study designs, and the needs of the broader child welfare field to help each site …

Spatio-Temporal Distribution Of Negative Emotions In New York City After A Natural Disaster As Seen In Social Media, Oliver Gruebner, Sarah R. Lowe, Martin Sykora, Ketan Shankardass, Sv Subramanian, Sandro Galea

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Disasters have substantial consequences for population mental health. We used Twitter to (1) extract negative emotions indicating discomfort in New York City (NYC) before, during, and after Superstorm Sandy in 2012. We further aimed to (2) identify whether pre- or peri-disaster discomfort were associated with peri- or post-disaster discomfort, respectively, and to (3) assess geographic variation in discomfort across NYC census tracts over time. Our sample consisted of 1,018,140 geo-located tweets that were analyzed with an advanced sentiment analysis called ”Extracting the Meaning Of Terse Information in a Visualization of Emotion” (EMOTIVE). We calculated discomfort rates for 2137 NYC census …

What We Do and Why

Ohio is committed to improving outcomes for children and families and strengthening its child welfare workforce. When we improve the child welfare workforce, we improve outcomes for children and families. As a participant in a national workforce research project through the Quality Improvement Center for Workforce Development (QIC-WD), Ohio collected data over the last several months and completed a workforce needs assessment. The assessment identified high staff burnout, secondary trauma and lack of engagement as major contributors to Ohio workforce challenges. To address these challenges, six Ohio counties − Champaign, Hamilton, Knox, Montgomery, Summit and …

Experiential Organizing: Pursuing Relational And Bureaucratic Goals Through Symbolically And Experientially Oriented Work, Keimei Sugiyama, John Paul Stephens Oct 2018

Experiential Organizing: Pursuing Relational And Bureaucratic Goals Through Symbolically And Experientially Oriented Work, Keimei Sugiyama, John Paul Stephens

Faculty Scholarship

Current scholarship on organizational practices that foster a sense of care and collaboration in work relationships has yet to fully account for the potential misalignment between the goals of a given practice and how it is actually experienced. To address this issue, we develop a theoretical framework of experiential organizing, which we define as an iterative process through which positive relational and bureaucratic goals of a practice are pursued via symbolically and experientially oriented work. We offer theory to explain how organizations move through the experiential organizing process, what different types of work are required, and how the different parts …

Ya Gotta Wanna: Shifting Motivational Priorities In The Self-Control Process, Keemia Vaghef Oct 2018

Ya Gotta Wanna: Shifting Motivational Priorities In The Self-Control Process, Keemia Vaghef

Theses and Dissertations

Self-control has been linked to a range of important academic, social, and achievement-related outcomes (Tangney et al., 2004). However, there are a variety of differing perspectives on the process by which individuals exert self-control. Thus, the self-control process is still ambiguous and there is no single model that researchers have yet to agree upon. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine this self-control process in more detail, drawing from the shifting priorities self-control process model (Inzlicht, Schmeichel, & Macrae, 2014). More specifically, the study examined the distinct influence of regulatory-related constructs, specifically delay of gratification and future time perspective, …

Intercultural Coworker Relationships (Icors) In The Global Workplace: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer L. Morton Sep 2018

Intercultural Coworker Relationships (Icors) In The Global Workplace: A Grounded Theory Study, Jennifer L. Morton

Dissertations

Previous research supports what employees intuitively sense: peers make the place (Chiaburu & Harrison, 2008; Schneider, 1987). Extant research suggests coworker relationships have critical influence on outcomes ranging from turnover (Felps, Mitchell, Hekman, Lee, Holtom, & Harman, 2009) to creativity (Homan, Buengeler, Eckhoff, van Ginkel, & Voelpel, 2015) to organizational commitment (Viswesvaran & Ones, 2002) to employee health and well-being (Heaphy & Dutton, 2008). Despite the increase of Intercultural COworker Relationships (ICORs), particularly in multinational firms in the technology industry, research has yet to examine what defines coworker relationship quality in the presence of national cultural differences. In other words, …

Employee Perceptions Of Well-Being Programs, Alice V. Edwards, Susan Marcus Sep 2018

Employee Perceptions Of Well-Being Programs, Alice V. Edwards, Susan Marcus

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Measuring the effectiveness of well-being programs in the workplace is important for optimizing the return on investment and selection of programs that meet organizational objectives. A pilot study was performed to assess employee well-being using the Happiness Mini-Survey and a one-sample pre–post study design intended to quickly allow employees to subjectively rate their well-being before and after participating in various classes as part of a well-being program. The findings demonstrated statistical significance in employee subjective ratings; they reported feeling better emotionally, physically, and mentally after participating in the classes. The employees’ self-rating for stress level also had statistically significant improvement …

Differences In Self-Perceptions At Work Between Citizens And Undocumented Immigrants, Marcos Guevara Sep 2018

Differences In Self-Perceptions At Work Between Citizens And Undocumented Immigrants, Marcos Guevara

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

This research examined if differences in social categories between two groups, natural—born U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants with deferred action (DACA) led to differences in self-perceptions at work in areas such as Occupational Self-Efficacy (OSE), Organization Based Self-Esteem (OBSE), and Perceived Employability (PE). Additionally, the effect of Perceived Supervisor Similarity (PSS) on these relationships was also observed. Results showed significant differences only in PE with the DACA group having an unexpectedly higher level than the citizen group. The model was supported as OSE, OBSE, and PSS all significantly predicted PSS in both groups. Lastly, interaction effects were only found in …

Colorism In Assessor Ratings: Exploring The Roles Of Social Dominance Orientation, Metaphorical Associations And Skin Tone Stereotypes, Tiwi D. Marira Sep 2018

Colorism In Assessor Ratings: Exploring The Roles Of Social Dominance Orientation, Metaphorical Associations And Skin Tone Stereotypes, Tiwi D. Marira

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In recent years, public awareness of colorism, or discrimination based on skin tone, has grown. A previous study (Marira & Sommer, 2014) revealed that Social Dominance Orientation (SDO) (i.e., the desire for group-based hierarchy) predicted Black participants’ discriminatory résumé ratings and hiring decisions in favor of lighter-skinned over darker-skinned, African American job applicants. This investigation focused on replicating and extending these findings by utilizing a more racially inclusive sample of Black and White adults and by examining more realistic candidate evaluation and hiring assessments. These simulated workplace assessments were embedded in an online business simulation requiring participants to make …

The Relationship Between Social Anxiety And Leadership Emergence: A Resource Perspective, Katherine Naomi Rau Sep 2018

The Relationship Between Social Anxiety And Leadership Emergence: A Resource Perspective, Katherine Naomi Rau

Theses and Dissertations

Despite its certain prevalence, mental illness has remained largely unstudied in the field of Industrial-Organizational Psychology. The research at hand addresses a widening gap in the literature: what does mental illness mean for leadership, particularly leadership emergence? In attempting to answer this question, I examined the experience of social anxiety as it is the most commonly diagnosed anxiety disorder and has particular relevance to the workplace. By utilizing a resource perspective, I found that controlling for personality, social anxiety did significantly predict emotional exhaustion in terms of both frequency and intensity. Emotional exhaustion and professional self-efficacy significantly predicted leadership emergence …

The Role Of Self-Disclosure In Improving Workplace Cross-Race Mentoring Outcomes, Christine R. Smith Sep 2018

The Role Of Self-Disclosure In Improving Workplace Cross-Race Mentoring Outcomes, Christine R. Smith

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

While the racial diversity of the workforce is increasing, minority employees still do not appear to be advancing professionally at the same rates as White employees. There are many explanations for why minority employees do not experience the same rates of advancement as White employees. One key developmental relationship that can aid in increasing the opportunities for minority employees to advance and grow in an organization is the mentoring relationship. However, given the lack of diversity in the upper levels of organizational hierarchies, minorities are more likely to have a White mentor than they are to have a minority mentor. …

The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance Aug 2018

The Influence Of Regional Stereotypes In Employee Selection, Brittani E. Plaisance

Doctoral Dissertations

An individual’s social world is understood through categorizing other people as those within an individual’s own in-group and those without, or the out-group. Social cognitive theory suggests that individuals make decisions in social settings based on implicit social comparisons between these groups. Stereotypes are oversimplified beliefs about the members of a specific group and discrimination is the behavioral outcome based on held stereotypes. Discrimination based on race, ethnicity, age, and gender has dominated research in the realm of employee selection for the last twenty years. Researchers have demonstrated perceived and actual differences in various attributes by region of the United …

A Human-Systems Approach To Proactively Managing Risk Through Training In An Evolving Aviation Industry, Michael W. Sawyer, Katherine A. Berry, Jason P. Kring, Edward M. Austrian Aug 2018

A Human-Systems Approach To Proactively Managing Risk Through Training In An Evolving Aviation Industry, Michael W. Sawyer, Katherine A. Berry, Jason P. Kring, Edward M. Austrian

National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)

The Aviation industry is rapidly evolving through increased automation on the flight deck, new air traffic control tools and procedures, and expanded applications of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The majority of these enhancements will rely on human operators (pilots, air traffic controllers, dispatchers, etc.) in order to be safely integrated into the National Airspace System. The staggered development cycle of these technological changes, coupled with independent development teams and relatively limited operational testing opportunities, can create significant challenges. These technological enhancements must be met with similarly rapid advancements in risk mitigation and training.

In this presentation we describe a standardized …

Prosocial Implicit Trait Policies Underlie Performance On Different Situational Judgment Tests With Interpersonal Content, Stephan J. Motowidlo, Filip Lievens, Kamalika Ghosh Aug 2018

Prosocial Implicit Trait Policies Underlie Performance On Different Situational Judgment Tests With Interpersonal Content, Stephan J. Motowidlo, Filip Lievens, Kamalika Ghosh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study tests the hypothesis that situational judgment tests (SJTs) with interpersonal content reflect implicit beliefs about the utility of prosocial action for job effectiveness and that agreeable people are more likely to believe that prosocial action is effective. Two hundred ninety-four undergraduates completed four different SJTs with interpersonal content and a measure of Agreeableness. Results show that the effectiveness of response options in these SJTs is positively correlated with the level of prosociality they express and that because of their prosocial elements, scores on different SJTs are correlated with one another and with Agreeableness. These results shed light on …
