Understanding Wellness In Law Enforcement: A Crisis, Phil Baebenroth
Understanding Wellness In Law Enforcement: A Crisis, Phil Baebenroth
Doctorate in Education
This study investigates the perceptions of current licensed peace officers in Minnesota regarding reforming their profession. From 2017 to 2020, more police officers in the United States died by suicide than officers killed by gunfire, assaults, crashes, or accidents in the line of duty (Officer Down Memorial Page, 2023 & Blue H.E.L.P, 2023). These statistics present a wellness crisis in the policing profession that deserves immediate attention. There have been worldwide calls for changes in policing from people outside of law enforcement, but few incorporate the practical insights of police officers and even fewer are concerned with officer wellness aspects. …
Lived Experiences Of Academic Librarians Of Color: A Bibliography, Jody Condit Fagan
Lived Experiences Of Academic Librarians Of Color: A Bibliography, Jody Condit Fagan
Libraries
The scholarship in this bibliography offers wisdom for all academic library workers about the experiences of academic librarians of color. My initial purpose in exploring the literature was to combat my own ignorance and to help me be a better colleague to non-white librarians in predominantly white academic institutions. These works also inform diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in academic libraries, especially when primarily theory-based approaches might fall flat for a given audience.
I have tried to provide links to open access full-text where possible. Where a book chapter has no open access online, I provide a link to the …
Built For Continuous Improvement: Professional Accountability In The Academic Setting, Richard Sinclair
Built For Continuous Improvement: Professional Accountability In The Academic Setting, Richard Sinclair
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
One way to organize schools to continue to improve is to build the culture around the natural spirit of its people. Rich Sinclair collected data from one of North Carolina’s highest-rated public schools to learn how the design and development of their professional culture have progressed over the last five years, including through the height of the pandemic. This mixed-methods study on the K-12 efficacy of values-driven organizational development offers three lessons that can help guide systematic efforts to align more school work environments with the best in the world.

Improving The Land Trust Model’S Impact On Environmental Conservation In Northern California, Peter Talbot
Master's Projects and Capstones
For years, the land trust sector of California and much of the United States has operated with a dollars and acres mentality that has prioritized fundraising as a result of acreage protected. Within California, nearly 5.8 million acres of land have been protected by 132 land trusts throughout the state. To accommodate for the diverse cross-section of land and the many needs of the population, land trusts take on numerous shapes and sizes. A unique aspect of this diversity is the rich agricultural and natural spaces found throughout the state. This mix of land and variety of land uses has …
The Psychometric Evaluation Of Decent Work In India, Jadvir K. Gill
The Psychometric Evaluation Of Decent Work In India, Jadvir K. Gill
Industrial-Organizational Psychology Dissertations
Work has a high impact on an individual’s well-being, health, and the lives of their loved ones who depend on them (Ford et al., 2013). The Decent Work Scale, constructed by Duffy et. al. (2017), measures what it means to have access to decent work (safe conditions, time for leisure and rest, support for family and social values, adequate compensation, and access to adequate health care) in the United States. However, a gap in the social sciences is the lack of external validity. Psychological research has mainly focused its attention on western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic nations and then …

What Does The Ignatian Leader Do?, Michelle Wheatley D.Min.
Jesuit Higher Education: A Journal
Plenty of resources exist regarding the history of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Ignatian spirituality, and Jesuit education. Yet many colleagues still wonder how best to apply Ignatian principles in their everyday work and leadership, especially in the context of adaptive challenges and heated disagreement. Therefore, this article seeks to build bridges between Jesuit wisdom and concrete personal, interpersonal, and organizational strategies, particularly by bringing foundational Jesuit resources into conversation with contemporary leadership theories and practices. With four focus areas born from study, relationships, prayer, and a desire to be of help, these reflections explore practical ways of answering the …

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
The rise of work-from-home (WFH) arrangements has brought significant changes to how employees work and interact with each other. This dissertation aims to examines the potential impact of WFH arrangements on employee creativity and investigates whether this impact varies across high-context and low-context cultures, with a particular focus on how demographic characteristics such as gender, age, and education may affect this relationship. The study is conducted within a top 10 global automotive supplier with associates in China (high-context culture) and Germany (low-context culture). As individual creativity often arises from collaboration and interaction with others, I hypothesised that as WFH frequency …

Utilizing New Technologies To Measure Therapy Effectiveness For Mental And Physical Health, Jonathan Ossie
Dissertations
Mental health is quickly becoming a major policy concern, with recent data reporting increasing and disproportionately worse mental health outcomes, including anxiety, depression, increased substance abuse, and elevated suicidal ideation. One specific population that is especially high risk for these issues is the military community because military conflict, deployment stressors, and combat exposure contribute to the risk of mental health problems.
Although several pharmacological approaches have been employed to combat this epidemic, their efficacy is mixed at best, which has led to novel nonpharmacological approaches. One such approach is Operation Surf, a nonprofit that provides nature-based programs advocating the restorative …
The Right People In The Wrong System: Examining The Tension Between Nonprofit Individuals And Organizational Structure, Erin Vong
Master's Theses
Nonprofit organizations pursue missions of social good while still operating within the confines of systems of oppression, creating a tension between organizational values and operational success. Previous research focuses on the micro-level role of individuals and the macro-level role of ideologies that create these tensions for nonprofit workers in these spaces. Through a qualitative case study, this thesis seeks to uncover the meso-level role of organizational structures in the experiences of nonprofit workers. The research questions that guided this case study were (a) How does one organization present equitable working conditions for its staff? (b) How do staff at this …

Exploring The Relationship Between Nurse Supervisor’S Servant Leadership Behavior And Nursing Employee’S Self-Assessment Of Engagement And Burnout In Nigeria, Michael Otuwurunne
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Burnout is a problem among workers in Nigeria, especially among nurses (Ozumba, & Alabere, 2019). This study examined whether there was a significant relationship between the employee perception of the servant leadership behaviors of the nurse supervisor and the employee’s self-rating of burnout: exhaustion and disengagement, and servant leadership behaviors of the nurse supervisor, and engagement: vigor, dedication, and absorption. Exhaustion refers to an intensive physical, affective, and cognitive strain while disengagement refers to the distancing of oneself from one’s work, and experiencing negative attitudes toward the work object, work content, or one’s work in general (Demerouti et al., 2001). …

Affective Commitment, Mentoring, And Anticipated Turnover Among Millennials, Keiasha Hypolite
Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Millennials comprise the largest group of individuals in the workforce, yet organizations struggle to keep millennials engaged in the workplace. Millennials move from job to job, with an average stay at one employer between 12 and 18 months (Hechl, 2017). Researchers have reported that millennials cause the majority of turnover in the workplace. Globally, human resources practitioners experience difficulties retaining millennials (Sahraee et al., 2021). Previous studies have researched millennials, affective commitment, mentoring, and turnover. However, no known research has used all four factors to solve a global problem. In their discussion of the highly competitive labor market, Ramírez …

Toward Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Outreach And Engagement In Extension Education: Expert Consensus On Barriers And Strategies, John Diaz, Cody Gusto, Lendel K. Narine, K.S.U Jayaratne, Colby Silvert
Journal of Extension
Barriers to the successful implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) education and outreach initiatives are being documented across higher education institutions as DEI policies and protocols are gaining attention. Despite growing attention to promote DEI in higher education institutions, there remains a need to examine barriers preventing DEI efforts in a systematic way, particularly in Extension education contexts to formulate strategies to promote DEI. We present an expert, consensus-based framework to identify the most salient barriers to successful DEI implementation in Extension. We also discuss opportunities for Extension practitioners to overcome salient barriers with tailored mitigation strategies.
Knowledge Management & Decision Making: How Leaders Can Make More Informed Decisions, Jennifer Riad
Knowledge Management & Decision Making: How Leaders Can Make More Informed Decisions, Jennifer Riad
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
People make decisions daily, but the question remains: Are they making sound judgments in the decision-making process? This article aims to understand better knowledge and decision-making, the limitations accompanying those, and how to improve these actions. Leaders must be conscious of these limitations and actively work against them to make more informed decisions. A review of the literature revealed four themes—the nature of knowing, cognitive limitations, groupthink, and ethics. This article imparts a brief “crash course” on various examples that interfere with good decision-making to educate readers and conclude with corresponding recommendations. Recommendations include acknowledging the limitations that impede decision-making, …

Textbook Affordability At Smith College: Affirming Smith's Commitment To Creating An Inclusive, Equitable And Accessible Educational Community, Natalie Laroche
Other Student Projects
The U.S. Public Interest Research Group’s (PIRG) Education Fund, notes that “in 2020, 65 percent of students surveyed reported skipping buying a textbook because of cost” (Vitez & Nagle, n.d.). The costs of course materials are rising at astronomical rates. According to the Student PIRGs, “the cost of textbooks and course materials has increased at three times the rate of inflation since the 1970s” (Xie, 2023). Textbooks are unnecessarily expensive and are increasingly a barrier to education access and student success. Extensive research has demonstrated that while publishers can get away with (and profit off of) high prices, students who …
Expanding Volunteer Program Effectiveness In Refugee Resettlement, Julianna Kantner
Expanding Volunteer Program Effectiveness In Refugee Resettlement, Julianna Kantner
International and Global Studies Undergraduate Honors Theses
The Department of Health and Human Services found that refugee resettlement results in a net positive fiscal impact of approximately $63.0 billion over a ten-year period. Meanwhile, refugees are one of the most highly vetted groups of people immigrating to the United States, enduring a screening process that lasts approximately 2 years. Despite this, anti-refugee sentiments and fluctuating federal support hinders the long-term success of refugee resettlement agencies (RRAs) and support organizations. Successful volunteer programs are critical in maintaining the long-term aid of refugees and advocacy for reliable federal support. The need for successful volunteer programs is especially prevalent in …
Class Salient Interactions And Selection Decisions: The Stratifying Power Of Employers’ Emotions, Kristie Moergen
Class Salient Interactions And Selection Decisions: The Stratifying Power Of Employers’ Emotions, Kristie Moergen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Securing employment is critical to accessing labor market rewards such as a steady income, benefits, and advancement opportunities. However, an individual's social class—corresponding with their economic, social, and cultural capital—may advantage or disadvantage them in gaining employment. Indeed, it is well-evidenced that the lower social class experiences labor market disadvantage, and management scholars point to organizational selection processes as one lever of such inequality. Still, the role of class salient interactions—same- and cross-class interactions between an interviewer and interviewee— and, specifically, the role of the employer remains an open question. Understanding how class salient interactions impact selection is critical, not …

Impact Of Employee-Supervisor Attachment Styles On The Prevalence And Symptomatic Expression Of Secondary Traumatic Stress In Public Child Welfare Workers., Lisa Purdy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Child welfare organizations throughout the nation grapple with turnover rates estimated to be as high as 65% (e.g., CWLA, 2016; Edwards & Wideman, 2018). Turnover contributes negatively to client outcomes, organizational financial shortages, and to perpetuating stressful conditions for the child welfare workforce. One factor found to contribute to turnover within child welfare is that of secondary traumatic stress (STS). Child welfare workers are known to experience higher rates of STS than any other helping professional (Brady, 2017). However, while many risk and protective factors for secondary traumatic stress have been evaluated, there remains a gap in the literature as …

Special Education Teacher Attrition: K-12 Administrator Perspectives, Tia Alove Stevens-Hicks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
Teacher attrition is a significant contributor to the teacher shortages, with preretirement attrition accounting for two thirds of all attrition. Special education teachers leave teaching at significantly higher rates than their general education peers. In addition, there is a greater demand for special education teachers due to the increase in public school students requiring special education services. As a result, many K–12 administrators and other educational leaders often fill vacant positions with unqualified or new teachers with less experience than their predecessors. Special education teachers have reported that teachers who remained in their positions reported high levels of administrative …

The Role Of Organizational Support In The Relationship Between Safety Climate And Organizational Outcomes, Lee Chambers
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Organizations employing individuals in high-risk or safety-sensitive occupations (e.g., construction workers, commercial drivers, pilots, and oil rig workers) face the challenge of ensuring their employees’ safety and well-being amidst various hazards and dangerous situations. To address this, cultivating a positive safety climate has been identified as a crucial factor in reducing workplace accidents or injuries. However, despite its importance, the link between safety climate and non-safety outcomes remains underexplored in the literature. In response, this study proposed a model based on social exchange theory, which highlights the crucial role of organizational support in explaining the relationship between safety climate and …

Generative Beauty: How Engaging With Beauty Sparks Transformation, Rebecca Byrd Musser
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Nonprofit Studies Capstone Projects
“Be the change you wish to see in the world,” declared Mahatma Gandhi. There is a profound awareness of the need for change as individuals reflect on the impact of global and system challenges as well as community challenges. People cannot just “be the change” until they themselves are first changed. Beauty is a powerful catalyst for change that begins with the individual, expanding to the community. To solve community problems, program designers must find a way to unleash untapped creativity. This study explores the impact of engaging beauty via the arts (paintings, Mary Oliver poetry, and The Lark Ascending) …

To Seek Or Not To Seek? An Inquiry Into Feedback-Seeking Behavior Among Non-Clinical Healthcare Workers, Abigail R. Ortiz
To Seek Or Not To Seek? An Inquiry Into Feedback-Seeking Behavior Among Non-Clinical Healthcare Workers, Abigail R. Ortiz
Organization, Information and Learning Sciences ETDs
Understanding what motivates non-clinical healthcare workers to seek feedback in the workplace is critical in supporting such behavior within organizations. This study aims to answer the following research question “Why do non-clinical healthcare workers seek feedback in the workplace?” To conduct this study, I analyzed 13 semi-structured interviews with non-clinical healthcare workers. Findings confirmed the presence of four self-motives (self-assessment, self-improvement, self-enhancement, and self-verification). Additionally, study findings highlighted the presence of other-oriented motives, when individuals seek feedback due to their concern or care for others (i.e., patients, teams, and supervisors). The research also illustrated the interplay of self- and other-oriented …
