Mora Alignment And Multiple Foot Types In K’Ichee’, Rusty Barrett
Mora Alignment And Multiple Foot Types In K’Ichee’, Rusty Barrett
Linguistics Presentations
This paper presents an analysis of the stress system in the Nahualá dialect of K’ichee’ (a Mayan language spoken in Western Guatemala) and discusses the theoretical implications of K’ichee’ stress. In K’ichee’, quantity sensitivity is dependent on position within a word rather than syllable structure. The analysis of K’ichee’ suggests the need for a uniform analysis of foot structure within OT so that stress is always dependent on foot structure rather than syllable structure (with the effects of quantity sensitivity resulting from the equation of a foot with a single syllable). The proposed analysis is applied to the case of …
Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf
Slovak Standard Language Development In The 15th–18th Centuries: A Diglossia Approach, Mark Richard Lauersdorf
Linguistics Faculty Publications
This study provides a sketch of Slovak standard language development during the pre-codification period (15th-18th centuries) within a diglossia framework. The focus is on the earlier periods of the 15th and 16th centuries – the earliest time from which there is significant direct documentation of patterns of indigenous language use in Slovakia in the form of a larger corpus of texts written in a Slavic language (be it Czech or mixed Czech-Slovak). The investigation indicates a 15th-16th century situation of Czech-Slovak diglossia that is gradually resolved in the course of the 17th-18th centuries through increasing development and use of a …

Machine Translation From The Perspective Of Relevance Theory : An Evaluative Study, Yvonne Hwee Hong Yeo
Student Works (2000-2009)
This study evaluates the efficacy of machine translation (MT) in domains where MT is not conventionally used, that is, in non-technical domains where the subject matters involve human, social and/or societal phenomena. The ultimate purpose of this endeavor is to assess the capacity of MT in dealing with the phenomenon of 'context' as well as utterance interpretation. The evaluation endeavor is twofold, consisting of evaluation of MT product and evaluation of MT process, with the latter being the main focus. Such evaluation is carried out through comparison between human translation corpora (HT product) and machine translation corpora (MT product). This …

An Error Analysis Of English Interrogatives : A Case Study, Jr. Abd Manaff Abd. Rahman
Student Works (2000-2009)
This is an error analysis study on the interrogatives formed by 80 Form V students of Sekolah Menengah Ugama (Arab), Shamsul Maarif, Pulai Chondong, Machang Kelantan. Though these students have been learning English for 12 years, many still find it difficult to form wh and yes-no questions. The errors studied are confined to lexical errors and errors in 'fronting,' a syntactic consideration. In other words, the study will look at whether the correct question words have been put in front of the questions when forming wh questions and yes-no questions using verbs to-be, auxiliary verbs 'have', 'medals' and 'do' verbs. …

Analisis Tautan Dan Runtutan Dalam Teks Klasik Dan Moden, Hasnah Mat Adnan
Student Works (2000-2009)
Research in this field has touched beyond grammatical barrier, which is specification of traditional about Malay discourse and modern type. The to two main aspects, being the base of text, which are cohesion and coherence will be the main focus in this investigation. One who investigates the aspect of cohesion without studying the aspect of coherence in a discourse is not complete as both are linked to one another. Although both are different concepts, they are revealing continuous interplay at the level of textual structure. Cohesion, being the form and coherence as the function of meaning should not be ignored …

Kiasan Melayu Dalam Pengucapan Awam : Satu Kajian Teks Ucapan, Norazlina Mohd. Kiram
Student Works (2000-2009)
This research presents an analysis on the use of Malay idioms in public speeches. The analysis is based on the speech on the National Budget 1998. Research has found that the budget speech contained direct criticisms that negatively affect the target group. This phenomenon should not have happened if only the speaker was more careful in his diction. The analysis aims at identifying the Malay forms of idiomatic expression used in speech texts. The categorization of forms is based on the study done by Safian Hussein ( 1988). To relate it to public speaking, this study will refer to the …
Chinese Special Languages And The Notion Of Headedness, Andrew R. Hippisley, David Cheng, Khurshid Ahmad
Chinese Special Languages And The Notion Of Headedness, Andrew R. Hippisley, David Cheng, Khurshid Ahmad

New concepts require designation by new terms, typically created from already existing words by means of already existing word formation operations. The preference for operation depends on typological factors, with the consequence that a term in one language may differ structurally from its equivalent in another. We present a case study of computing terms of two typologically distinct languages, English and Chinese. We show that despite typological difference there is a pattern to the way in which English and Chinese terms correspond. We suggest this is partly due to a word formation constraint that applies irrespective of typological factors, namely …
The Huehuetenango Sprachbund And Mayan Language Standardization In Guatemala, Rusty Barrett
The Huehuetenango Sprachbund And Mayan Language Standardization In Guatemala, Rusty Barrett
Linguistics Faculty Publications
This paper outlines the characteristics of a Sprachbund area in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, centered around the town of Huehuetenango. Mesoamerica as a whole forms a unique linguistic area (cf. Campbell 1977, Campbell, Kaufman, and Smith-Stark 1986). The languages of the Huehuetenango Sprachbund contain many of the features typical of the Mesoamerican area, including vigesimal number systems, possessive constructions of the form "her car the woman," the use of relational nouns, non-verb-final word orders, and devoicing of non-nasal sonorant coda consonants. The Huehuetenango area is unique, however, in that the languages of the region share several additional features found …
Borrowings Into Kisi As Evidence Of Mande Expansionism And Influence, George Tucker Childs
Borrowings Into Kisi As Evidence Of Mande Expansionism And Influence, George Tucker Childs
Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Strong claims have been made as to the influence of Mande languages on the languages of the Atlantic Group. This paper analyzes Mande borrowings in one Atlantic language in order to understand the nature of that influence. The Atlantic language of focus is Kisi, a member of the Southern Branch, spoken primarily in Guinea. The Kisi people have separated from their closest relatives on the Atlantic Coast in historic times, probably due to the second Mande expansionist wave of the sixteenth century at the collapse of the Mali Empire. Today the Kisi are completely surrounded and interpenetrated by speakers of …
Can [Sonorant] Spread?, Kenneth S. Olson, Paul H. Schultz
Can [Sonorant] Spread?, Kenneth S. Olson, Paul H. Schultz
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
This paper presents empirical evidence for the spread of the feature [sonorant], based on data from Bilaala (Nilo-Saharan, Chad). The analysis assumes that this feature is a dependent of the root node rather than part of the root node (as previously assumed). An alternative analysis, involving the spread of the feature [nasal], is shown to be inferior to one in which [sonorant] spreads.
A Word-And-Flesh Profession: A Response To White And Brueggemann, Marie Failinger
A Word-And-Flesh Profession: A Response To White And Brueggemann, Marie Failinger
Faculty Scholarship
Speech remakes the world through a relationship among words, speaker, and hearer. On one hand, this view of the human encounter as essentially rhetorical precludes an understanding of speech as purely subjectivist or emotivist self-expression. On the other hand, this same view of human speech interaction precludes the understanding of speech acts as mere descriptions of previously discovered or reasoned truth, either empirical or abstract. Professor White reaffirms this triad among words, speaker, and hearer with what he has identified as the “deeply reciprocal” dynamic of language. Professor Brueggemann also describes the speech acts between Moses, Abraham, and their God …

Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen
Writing In The Contact Zone: Three Portraits Of Reflexivity And Transformation, Laurene L. Christensen
Dissertations and Theses
Culture is at the core of language teaching. Because classrooms are contact zones (Pratt 1991), teachers must have a well-developed sense of their own intercultural competence so that they may better facilitate the cross-cultural discovery inherent in language teaching. Teacher preparation programs need to provide opportunities for new teachers to increase their intercultural awareness. The purpose of this research was to qualitatively understand the experiences of pre-service teachers in a required culture-learning class at a large urban university. Specifically, the focus of this study was the completion of a mini-ethnography project designed to give the students a cross-cultural exchange. Since …

A Categorial Grammar Fragment For Lushootseed, Deryle W. Lonsdale
Faculty Publications
This paper establishes a basic framework for a Categorial Grammar (CG) description ofLushootseed morpho syntax and semantics. After a brief review of English CG principles, a preliminary attempt is made to apply these fundamentals to Lushootseed free and bound morphemes. Several sample derivations are presented. including one rather complex syntactic ambigiuty previously noted in the literature with its alternative descriptions. Once the syntactic elements have been put in place a short overview is presented of how semantic interpretation can be established in tandem with syntactic composition principles. Finally, the implementation of this framework within the Attribute Logic Engine environment is …

It is generally the case that special volumes include studies on a narrowly defined topic of linguistic investigation from a single theoretical standpoint. A glance at the table of contents of the present issuem on the other hand, reveals an eclectic group of papers with topics ranging from second-language acquisition to feature theory. In addition to the variety of topics covered, it should be noted that a wide variety of theoretical frameworks is represented. The present volume contains the work of researchers who assume structuralist, generative, functionalist, and psycholinguistic perspectives. Nevertheless, the thread that ties these studies together is that …
Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade
Are Plurals Derived Or Stored?, David Eddington, Patricia Lestrade
Faculty Publications
The ability to produce and comprehend human language involves at least two processes: the storage of units and the computations performed on those units. The role that storage and computation play in the processing of inflectional morphology is highly debated. At one end of the spectrum is the full storage model, which holds that all known words, whether morphologically complex or not, have separate entries in the mental lexicon (Jackendoff 1975, Manelis and Tharp 1977, Butterworth 1983, Bybee 1985, 1988, Rumelhart and McClelland 1986, McClelland 1988, Stemberger 1994, Rueckl, Mikolinski, Raveh, Miner, and Mars 1997). This position puts an enormous …
