In this thesis I attempt to answer three questions:

H1) Do children use proportionally more prenominal or post-nominal placement of adjectives than adults?

H2) Are children more conservative or more creative in their behavior in alternating prenominal and post-nominal placement of adjectives?

H3) If colored terms are more frequent in child speech will they pattern more like prenominal adjectives or more like post nominal adjectives, as in adult speech?

For researchers, the study of video game players - how they behave, interact, and cooperate in a virtual world – presents a challenge: what methodologies are best suited to approaching these interactions? From a sociolinguistic approach, how do gamers converse, and what do these conversations reveal about epistemic, affective, and political relationships? This study uses John DuBois’ Stance Theory (2007) and recent modifications of it (Kiesling 2022), to analyze data gathered from the popular multiplayer online battle-arena (MOBA) game League of Legends. This paper uses survey results and interactive mapping tools to analyze correlations across different versions of the non-standard verbal use of the word rather, in particular with participial morphology, as in rathered. Across numerous possible instantiations of the construction, there appear to be in fact a quite limited number of grammars, which are generated by an implicational hierarchy of functional heads, along with the availability of a silent verb HAVE. The overall picture supports several broader conclusions. First, silent verbs can be licensed by head-moving to a modal head in the extended projection. This movement is freely available, but …

Federal discourse pertaining to college access requires clarified definition. Use of the college access construct has become commonplace, yet no unified refinement of meaning exists. This study, which covered U.S. presidential communications from January 2009 to October 2021, addressed the abstraction of language as leaders presented ideas, policies, and opinions. Observable trends impacting social mobility for students from underserved populations were of central interest. The research methodology, Quantitative Ethnography (QE), used the tool of Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA). Dyslexic children often fail to correct errors while reading aloud, and dyslexic adolescents and adults exhibit lower amplitudes of the error-related negativity (ERN)—the neural response to errors—than typical readers during silent reading. Past researchers therefore suggested that dyslexia may arise from a faulty error-detection mechanism that interferes with orthographic learning and text comprehension. An alternative possibility is that comprehension difficulty in dyslexics is primarily a downstream effect of low-quality lexical representations—that is, poor word knowledge. On this view the attenuated ERN in dyslexics is a byproduct, rather than a source, of underdeveloped orthographic knowledge. Because the second view implies a …

US students who are blind or have visual impairments do not read at the level of a third-grader with typical sight until, on average, halfway through the seventh grade. As a first step toward narrowing that gap, we investigated levels of linguistic awareness among teachers of students who are blind or visually impaired (TSBVIs) because research with general education teachers has demonstrated a link between teacher linguistic awareness and student literacy outcomes. Euphemisms have not received much attention in natural language processing, despite being an important element of polite and figurative language. Euphemisms prove to be a difficult topic, not only because they are subject to language change, but also because humans may not agree on what is a euphemism and what is not. Nonetheless, the first step to tackling the issue is to collect and analyze examples of euphemisms. We present a corpus of potentially euphemistic terms (PETs) along with example texts from the GloWbE corpus. Web-crawled datasets are known to be noisy, as they feature a wide range of language use covering both user-generated and professionally edited content as well as noise originating from the crawling process. This article presents one solution to reduce this noise by using automatic register (genre) identification-whether the texts are, e.g., forum discussions, lyrical or how-to pages. We apply the multilingual register identification model by Rönnqvist et al. (2021) and label the widely used Oscar dataset. Additionally, we evaluate the model against eight new languages, showing that the performance is comparable to previous findings on a restricted set of languages. …

This thesis looks at different styles of Indigenous language revitalization programs and seeks to delineate the three most successful characteristics seen across differing designs in an effort to promote the presence of these characteristics in existing programs. The literature analyzed outlines three main schools of thought: first, that language-based education is the most effective program design, second, that language-based education is only effective if it is directed and driven by the community it serves, and third, that culture-based education is the most effective design. This study’s purposes were to provide support for the Social identity theory of African American English (Vietze & Glasco, 2022) and the meanings African American English (AAE) speakers assign to their dialect. The study was primarily based on Tajfel’s (1979) social identity theory that proposes individuals derive a sense of self from group membership. The qualitative analyses examined ethnic and language group memberships. Ethnic identity development (Phinney, 1992), and ethnolinguistic identity theories (Giles and Johnson, 1987) guided narrative and content analyses of Kiese Laymon’s memoir, Heavy: An American Memoir (Laymon, 2018). Repeated reading is a popular intervention used to help struggling readers by exposing them to the same text multiple times. While the approach has been effective in L1 and some EFL settings, little research has explored its effectiveness compared against a control group or among ESL learners. Our study examined reading rate gains using words per minute and four eye-tracking measures with 46 mid-intermediate ESL learners grouped into three 14-week treatment groups: a control group that read 26 text passages (about two per week) just once through, another that read the same passages twice in each sitting, and a third …

The rating of proficiency tests that use the Inter-agency Roundtable (ILR) and American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) guidelines claims that each major level is based on hierarchal linguistic functions that require mastery of multidimensional traits in such a way that each level subsumes the levels beneath it. These characteristics are part of what is commonly referred to as floor and ceiling scoring. In this binary approach to scoring that differentiates between sustained performance and linguistic breakdown, raters evaluate many features including vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, and pragmatics, yet there has been very little empirical validation …

Prevelar raising is the raising of trap and dress vowels before voiced velars. While bag and beg raising have been described in Canada, the Upper Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest, an in-depth investigation of their distribution across North America is lacking, especially for beg. Using an online survey distributed to over 5,000 participants via Reddit (which skews toward younger, White males) and ordinary kriging for spatial interpolation, this study finds that prevelar raising is more widespread than previously reported: bag raising is found in much of the North and the Upper Midwest, and beg raising is far more variable and …

• Specifically, F2 is less dynamic, resulting in a “bounce” shape in F1-F2 plots.

Thai Sentence Segmentation Using Large Language Models, Narongkorn Panitsrisit

Thai sentence segmentation has been on the topic of interest among Thai NLP communities. However, not much literature has explored the use of transformer-based large language models to tackle the issue. We conduct three experiments on the LST20 corpus, including (1) fine-tuning WangchanBERTa, a large language model pre-trained on Thai, across different classification tasks, (2) joint learning for clause and sentence segmentation, and (3) cross-lingual transfer using the multilingual model XLM-RoBERTa. Our findings show that WangchanBERTa outperforms other models in Thai sentence segmentation, and fine-tuning it with token and contextual information further improves its performance. ลักษณะที่แสดงความแตกต่างของเสียงพูดและเสียงร้องเพลงในทางกลสัทศาสตร์นั้นได้มีการศึกษาพบหลายลักษณะด้วยกัน หนึ่งในนั้นรวมถึงลักษณะที่ไม่เกี่ยวข้องกับส่วนที่เป็นเสียงก้อง เช่นค่าช่วงเวลาเริ่มเสียงก้องของพยัญชนะกัก (Voice Onset Time) ซึ่งแสดงค่าระยะเวลาจากจุดเปิดฐานกรณ์จนถึงจุดที่เกิดการสั่นของเส้นเสียงของพยัญชนะกักในตำแหน่งต้นพยางค์ งานวิจัยที่ผ่านมาซึ่งศึกษาภาษาอังกฤษพบว่าเสียงร้องเพลงจะมีค่าช่วงเวลาเริ่มเสียงก้องของพยัญชนะกักน้อยกว่าเสียงพูด ในงานวิจัยชิ้นนี้ซึ่งศึกษาในภาษาไทยซึ่งมีความแตกต่างในการเปรียบต่างทางสัทวิทยาของพยัญชนะกักนั้น ได้ศึกษาด้วยวิธีการที่มีต้นแบบจากงานที่ผ่านมาในภาษาอังกฤษ และวิเคราะห์ทางสถิติด้วย mixed-effect linear regression พบว่า ความแตกต่างของค่าช่วงเวลาเริ่มเสียงก้องของพยัญชนะกักระหว่างเสียงพูดและเสียงร้องเพลงนั้น มีนัยสำคัญเพียงในพยัญชนะกักไม่ก้องพ่นลมเท่านั้น โดยมีแนวโน้มที่เสียงร้องเพลงจะมีค่าช่วงเวลาเริ่มเสียงก้องของพยัญชนะกักมากกว่าเสียงพูด ซึ่งต่างกับในงานวิจัยในภาษาอังกฤษ นำมาสู่ข้อสรุปว่าความแตกต่างของเสียงพูดและเสียงร้องเพลงในภาษาไทยนั้นอาจมีการพ่นลมเป็นหนึ่งในปัจจัยสำคัญ ซึ่งน่าจะเกิดจากการเน้นพยัญชนะให้ชัดเจนในขณะร้องเพลง

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) ศึกษาการแปรของค่าระดับความก้องในช่วงปิดฐานกรณ์และความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมของช่วงเปิดฐานกรณ์ของพยัญชนะกักที่มีสัทสมบัติและปรากฏในสัทบริบทที่แตกต่างกัน 2) ศึกษาปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างค่าระดับความก้องในช่วงปิดฐานกรณ์และความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมของช่วงเปิดฐานกรณ์ในการออกเสียงพยัญชนะกักภาษาไทยที่มีสัทสมบัติและปรากฏในสัทบริบทที่แตกต่างกัน 3) อภิปรายนัยยะของผลการแปรและปฏิสัมพันธ์ของค่าระดับความก้องและความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมต่อการแพร่ของละอองลอย ในการวิเคราะห์การแปรของค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ เก็บข้อมูลเสียงของบอกภาษา 10 คนจากคำพูดต่อเนื่อง 48 คำที่ประกอบขึ้นจากพยัญชนะกักก้องและไม่ก้องภาษาไทยใน 2 สัทบริบท นอกจากนี้ นำผลของค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์มาเชื่อมโยงกับนัยยะของการแพร่ละอองลอย ผลการศึกษาการแปรของค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์พบว่า 1) เมื่อเรียงลำดับตามระดับความก้องของพยัญชนะกักมีรูปแบบเดียวกันทั้ง 2 สัทบริบท คือ กักก้อง > ก้กไม่ก้องพ่นลม > ก้กไม่ก้องไม่พ่นลม เมื่อเปรียบเทียบระหว่างสัทบริบทพบว่า ตำแหน่งระหว่างสระ > ตำแหน่งนำหน้าสระ ซึ่งความต่างของประเภทพยัญชนะกักและสัทบริบทมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ 0.05 2) เมื่อเรียงลำดับตามความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมของพยัญชนะกักมี 2 รูปแบบทั้ง 2 สัทบริบท คือ รูปแบบ 1 กักไม่ก้องไม่พ่นลม > ก้กไม่ก้องพ่นลม > ก้กก้อง และรูปแบบ 2 กักไม่ก้องพ่นลม > ก้กไม่ก้องไม่พ่นลม > ก้กก้อง ซึ่งมีความต่างของประเภทพยัญชนะกักอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ 0.05 แต่ไม่พบความต่างระหว่างสัทบริบท ผลการศึกษาปฏิสัมพันธ์ของระดับความก้องและความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมต่อนัยยะของการแพร่ละอองลอยอนุมานได้ว่า ในแต่ละสัทบริบท พยัญชนะก้กไม่ก้องพ่นลมจะมีแนวโน้มของอัตราการแพร่ละอองลอยมากที่สุด เนื่องจากมีระดับความก้องเพิ่มขึ้นในระดับเดียวกับพยัญชนะกักก้องและมีความชันของค่าความเข้มพลังลมในระดับสูง รองลงมาคือพยัญชนะกักไม่ก้องไม่พ่นลม และน้อยสุดคือพยัญชนะกักก้อง ข้อค้นพบในครั้งนี้แสดงให้เห็นปัจจัยของสัทสมบัติและสัทบริบทที่มีผลต่อการแปรของค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ของพยัญชนะกัก นอกจากนี้ การไล่ระดับแนวโน้มของอัตราการแพร่ละอองลอยช่วยชี้ให้เห็นความน่าจะเป็นของการแพร่เชื้อโรคที่อาจเกิดขึ้นเฉพาะในบริบทภาษาไทย

วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างโครงสร้างสัทสัมพันธ์กับระดับการกลายเป็นศัพท์ของคำประสมภาษาไทย งานวิจัยเก็บข้อมูลจากอัตราส่วนค่าระยะเวลาพยางค์ซึ่งเป็นค่าทางกลสัทศาสตร์ที่บ่งชี้การเน้นคำและโครงสร้างสัทสัมพันธ์ระดับคำของคำประสมภาษาไทย ร่วมกับค่าบ่งชี้การกลายเป็นศัพท์ในเชิงปริมาณ ซึ่งแสดงถึงระดับการเปลี่ยนแปลงในแง่มุมต่าง ๆ ของกระบวนการกลายเป็นศัพท์ทั้งสิ้นสามค่า ได้แก่ 1) ระดับความหมายเชิงประกอบซึ่งบ่งชี้ระดับการเปลี่ยนแปลงความหมาย เก็บข้อมูลจากการทดลองตัดสินคำศัพท์ 2) ค่าระยะเวลาตอบสนองซึ่งบ่งชี้ระดับการเปลี่ยนแปลงหน่วยคำวากยสัมพันธ์ เก็บข้อมูลจากการตัดสินของผู้พูดโดยใช้แบบสอบถามระดับความหมายเชิงประกอบ และ 3) ความถี่การปรากฏซึ่งบ่งชี้ระดับการเปลี่ยนแปลงในเชิงการใช้ เก็บข้อมูลจากค่าความถี่ในคลังข้อมูล ผลการศึกษาพบว่าโครงสร้างสัทสัมพันธ์ของคำประสมสัมพันธ์กับระดับการกลายเป็นศัพท์ตามสมมติฐาน โดยคำประสมที่มีระดับการกลายเป็นศัพท์สูงนั้นมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกับคำเดี่ยวคือประกอบด้วยคำสัทสัมพันธ์หนึ่งคำและมีรูปแบบการเน้นแบบ เน้นรอง-เน้นหลัก ในขณะที่คำประสมที่มีระดับการกลายเป็นศัพท์ต่ำนั้นมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกับวลีสองพยางค์คือ ประกอบด้วยคำสัทสัมพันธ์สองคำ แสดงผ่านรูปแบบการเน้นแบบ เน้นหลัก-เน้นหลัก ข้อค้นพบของงานวิจัยนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าเมื่อคำประสมผ่านกระบวนการกลายเป็นศัพท์ โครงสร้างสัทสัมพันธ์มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงจากโครงสร้างที่มีหลายคำสัทสัมพันธ์ควบรวมกลายเป็นคำสัทสัมพันธ์เดียว โดยมีการลดลงของอัตราส่วนค่าระยะเวลาควบคู่ไปกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงโครงสร้างทางสัทสัมพันธ์ด้วย
