Growing an institutional repository at a small university library with limited resources brings a number of challenges, and VU is no different. The Christopher Center Library has no dedicated employees who work solely with its IR, ValpoScholar, and instead relies on a mix of interns and other employees to create records and upload works in their spare time. The OPUS repository at Governors State University, University Park IL was launched in May, 2014. The Repository replaces Dspace. Materials in the University Archives were reviewed for possible candidates for digitization and utilization of the Digital Commons Journal series structures for optimal showcasing of archived content of these defunct journals that originated at the University. Copies of the Journal of Communication Therapy, and Insight and Hindsight, journal were discovered in the University Archives, and identified for recovery of the publication's opus (filling in missing issues), digitization, and archival preservation. DePaul University Library created a suite of digital services to support faculty projects which addressed common hurdles to repository adoption. In a faculty survey we ran in the fall of 2014, faculty reported an unawareness of the repository, uncertainty of how they might use it. However, they also reported that they placed value on the repository services we presented to them and a desire to hear more information. Anecdotally, we also heard the common refrain that faculty are too busy and too technologically challenged to engage with the repository on their own. Libraries have guidelines and standards that hold them accountable to be effective institutions (Husid, 2010). The American Library Association’s (ALA) “Library Bill of Rights” sets six basic standards for all libraries to follow. Among other things, these standards encourage libraries to resist forms of censorship, grant access to all types of materials, and resist biases (ALA, 2007). Creating an Institutional Repository from scratch creates a multitude of both opportunities and pitfalls in establishment of workflow, content creation, outreach and marketing policies, and stakeholder support. Nova Southeastern University’s Digital Commons based repository, NSUWorks, completed its first year in February 2015. During this session, the triumphs and tribulations of the first year will be discussed, along with future plans in order to give attendees a glimpse into one particular IR experience. Archival collection digitization, outreach/marketing, journal/book publishing, reporting tools, and collection development will also be covered.

Once upon a time, the world was simpler. Publishers published and libraries collected a lot of what publishers published. Nothing is so simple any more. Now everybody’s a publisher—including librarians. Large-scale initiatives such as HighWire Press and Project Muse have had libraries in attendance at their births, and substantial continuing projects such as Euclid are still housed in libraries. A whirl of buzz and excitement surrounds a growing assumption that publishing is in some way and to some extent a critical function for the library of the future.

The term megajournal is used to describe publication platforms, like PLOS ONE, that claim to incorporate peer review processes and web technologies that allow fast review and publishing. These platforms also publish without the constraints of periodic issues and instead publish daily. We conducted a yearlong bibliometric profile of a sample of articles published in the first several months after the launch of PeerJ, a peer reviewed, open access publishing platform in the medical and biological sciences. When I started as an IR manager at Nova Southeastern University (September 2014), the IR had been live for 6 months and one of the in process pilot projects was a journal with 219 back issues dating to 1990. The journal was still on the demonstration site when I started.
