Open Educational Resources (OER) — teaching, learning and research materials that their owners make free for others to use, revise and share — offer a powerful means of expanding the reach and effectiveness of worldwide education.

The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO co-organised the World OER Congress in 2012 in Paris. That Congress resulted in the OER Paris Declaration: a statement that urged governments around the world to release, as OER, all teaching, learning and research materials developed with public funds.

The NISO Alternative Assessment Metrics Initiative was begun in July 2013 with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and divided into two phases. Phase II of the Project, which began in late 2014, set out to develop standards covering particular action items identified in Phase I through the creation of three NISO working groups. Data sharing has incredible potential to strengthen academic research, the practice of medicine, and the integrity of the clinical trial system. Some benefits are obvious: when researchers have access to complete data, they can answer new questions, explore different lines of analysis, and more efficiently conduct large-scale analyses across trials. Other advantages, such as providing a guardrail against conflicts of interest in a clinical trial system in which external sponsorship of research is common and necessary, are less visible yet just as critical. In critical friendship, individuals with similar aims and differing experiences and knowledge aid each other in achieving goals by critically observing each other’s performance and progress. Bonded with trust, critical friends serve as sworn friends who strive and struggle side by side and share joy and pain throughout their journey. How successful is ERA in measuring creative research? The ERA (2015) results would appear to advantage: citations over peer review, traditional research over non-traditional outputs and certain geographical locations over others. If indeed this is true, what are the implications for the future development of NTOs in this country given the recent article by NAVA (Winikoff, 2016), presenting the debate about the state of play of our art schools as one of survival and loss. The case for survival is one that needs to be closely examined where local and geographical factors are at play.

The World Wide Web (WWW) has changed the way that we access information. Digital repositories have become the solution for preserving old materials and the venue to allow open access (OA) to the public. This research paper examined the scholarly library and information science (LIS) literature related to cultural heritage and digital preservation including publication over time, core journals, countries that were the focus of publications, and types of library or cultural repositories that are delineated herein.

Pastime With Good Company: The Songs Of Henry Viii And His Daughter Elizabeth I, Courtney E. Clark

The purpose of this study is to document the surviving musical compositions of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The repositories in London containing each monarch’s remaining body of musical work were examined and the compositions themselves studied. Research was conducted to give further details about each document and its history within the Tudor monarchs’ lives.

Folklore can be defined as “context, performance, attitude, cultural tastes, and the like” (Toelken, 1996, p.7). With folktale and fairy tales, these stories embody cultural values and morals, aiding in learning a lesson or to keep intact a cultural tradition. Many works of literature serve as models for studies in folklore, offering literary criticism, while allowing ancient traditions and modern traditions to be explored (Toelken, 1996, p. 391). Additionally, most, if not all, written folklore, folktales, and fairy tales were originally passed down verbally, from one generation to the next; these stories are part of oral histories (Toelken, 1996). Mississippi has a place in the history of library science. Although libraries appeared in the state as early as 1818 (Halsell, 1975), training for librarians was not available until 1926 at the State Teacher’s College in Hattiesburg, later renamed The University of Southern Mississippi. Southern Miss awarded its first master’s degree in library science exactly fifty years ago, in 1965.

Proposes enacting changes to Section 701 and Section 408 of Title 17 of the United States Code to remove the United States Copyright Office from the Legislative branch of the federal government and move it to the Executive branch of the federal government, along with proposals for associated transfer of administrative and technical functions.

This talk is an expanded version of one given at the 2015 MOBIUS conference. Washington University librarians Emily Stenberg and Lauren Todd explain how they created and manage a collection in the university’s repository Open Scholarship for the Computer Science and Engineering department. This presentation will highlight how they developed a step-by-step workflow, addressed customization requests from the department, what really happened once that plan was implemented, and how they handle Bepress troubleshooting and faculty concerns. The presenters will also discuss how this project has helped them offer Open Scholarship as a service to other engineering faculty.

Institutionally licensed eBooks have not quite lived up to users’ needs and libraries’ expectations. Patrons accustomed to the ease of accessing eBooks purchased via commercial sites such as Amazon and Google Play are sometimes thrown for a loop when they encounter eBooks via the library’s site and the myriad restrictions that seem designed to turn users away. Libraries struggle with managing the complexities of eBook licensing and access, and staying on top of the differences between vendor platforms. As the rising cost of textbooks continues to burden students, some libraries have begun to facilitate the creation and sharing of Open Educational Resources. At Portland State University, Head of Digital Initiatives Karen Bjork has worked with faculty on campus to publish five new open textbooks in their repository, PDXScholar, all as part of a Provost-backed initiative. The initiative aligns with their institutional mission of better serving the student body: in their first term of use, the open textbooks saved students nearly $24,000!
