The shift toward a system of research and scholarship that is open by default is currently in progress. Since 2013, US federal research agencies have required that articles reporting publicly funded research be publicly accessible within 12 months. The Gates Foundation now requires immediate open access for funded research, and a group of 10 national funders in Europe have committed to implementing a similar policy by 2020. While the adoption of open educational resources (OERs) in the undergraduate curriculum has the evident benefit of reducing cost to the student, thinking deeply about OER adoption reveals numerous questions: can OERs match the quality of traditional textbooks and other commercial educational resources? Are there problems associated with the current textbook landscape that OERs can solve? And how easily can OERs be integrated into classrooms with established modes of instruction? In this paper the author examines from a library perspective some of the complications with transitioning to an open access model for journal publishing; how costs that support publishing efforts may shift from readers to researchers; what’s happening within the library community with regard to assessing the value of subscriptions; and what universities may come to expect from content providers as private funders take a more visible role in mandating the “openness” of research information.

The development of data and model integration platforms has furthered scientific inquiry and helped to solve pressing social and environmental problems. While several e-infrastructure platforms have been developed, the concept of data and model integration remains obscure, and these platforms have produced few firm results. This article investigates data and model integration on the Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS) platform, using three case projects from water-related fields. We provide concrete examples of data and model integration by analyzing the data transfer and analysis process, and demonstrate what platform functions are needed to promote the advantages of data and model …

This display will challenge students to think about the process that publications go through in order to arrive in their hands in time for class. The display features three scenarios and questions about the publication process with a flip-up feature to reveal the answer. The English author and lay theologian Charles Williams was an idiosyncratic, intriguing, perhaps intimidating subject. He was born in St. Albans near London in September 1886 and died in Oxford in May 1945. In that relatively brief life, his prodigious literary output encompassed virtually every form imaginable (novels, poetry, theology, critical reviews, plays, masques, detective story reviews, even a single short story). Elizabeth Wright (1962) commented on his “versatility and quantity” when describing “the size and scope of his published writings...
