What does it take to move open education from idea to practice? In this session we led a discussion about what supports instructors need to engage with open education and how we can make adoption and adaptation easy and inviting. We set the stage with an overview of findings from our IMLS-funded research (LG-72-17-0051-17) on the needs and practices of psychology instructors for adopting or creating open textbooks and OER. Libraries, publishers, and intermediary vendors strive to disseminate the most current information to their patrons and clients through the metadata in their catalogs, services, and software. One significant pinch point in this landscape is the transfer of journals from one publisher to another. The Transfer Code of Practice was created to provide these stakeholders with guidelines to ensure that the transfer process occurs with minimal disruption and that journal content remains accessible to subscribers. A previous article described a variety of possibilities for enhancing pedagogy while reducing costs to students. The impetus was a migration away from expensive textbooks and toward more affordable or free teaching materials. The conference presentation “Textbook Alternatives: Less Expensive and Better Pedagogy” discussed many of these issues, with suggestions for implementation incentives. This paper provides additional information about the Freshman OER Challenge initiative mentioned in the presentation.

Sci-Hub has been referred to as the “Robin Hood” of science, but in reality, it is not. Sci-Hub is a disruption to the entire scholarly publishing research cycle. Over the last three years, the amount of licensed e-content that has been illegally obtained by Sci-Hub has grown significantly. This content has been acquired through stolen institutional staff and student credentials. Acquiring and misappropriating these credentials creates serious risks for an institution’s systems and users as well as publishers. In 2016, University of British Columbia Science Library liaisons met with the Math faculty to consider the value of switching their beloved print monograph series to online format. Arguments of greater discoverability, findability, and access won the faculty members, and they voted in acceptance of the change. In retrospect, persuading the Math faculty of the value in switching from print to online format was an easy win. The tough part came in transforming this pledge to reality. But OER and affordability programs vary widely in scope, funding, and strategies, described in articles, book chapters, and news stories. New Self Check system from Bintech replacing bibliotheca units. Integrating with the Banner system for Faculty, Student, and staff loads and exporting fines and fee information to Banner. Publishing to Google Scholar, OCLC and other systems to automate updating of content to these services. Also discussed was how to load content into Primo VE.

Since Wikidata’s launch in 2012 as an open, collaboratively edited knowledge base, it’s held great promise for the library and scholarly communication community more broadly. Institutions and individual information professionals turned Wikidatans are using Wikidata to build a community-owned infrastructure for the bibliographic ecosystem, including open source tools that generate profiles of scholars, organizations, and publications. Objective: To describe how the library’s online tutorial for medical students, “Introduction to Citation Management Tools,” was created and integrated into the College of Medicine’s Residency Preparation Boot Camp. Implemented in 2017, passing the tutorial is still a requirement for completing the boot camp.

Methods: In 2017, the Maguire Medical Library was asked by undergraduate and graduate medical education faculty to create a citation management tutorial for 4th-year medical students preparing to commence their respective residency programs. Moving Peer Review Transparency From Process To Praxis, Emily Ford

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Scholarly publications often work to provide transparency of peer-review processes, posting policy information to their websites as suggested by the Committee on Publication Ethics’ (COPE) Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Publishing. Yet this falls short in providing peer-review transparency. Using examples from an interview-based qualitative study, this article argues that scholarly publications should move from peer-review process transparency to a praxis of transparency in peer review. Praxis infers that values inform practices. Scholarly publications should therefore use clear communication practices in all matters of business, and bolster transparency efforts, delineating rights and responsibilities of all players in …

Digital Collaborations: A Survey Analysis Of Digital Humanities Partnerships Between Librarians And Other Academics, Jessica Wagner Webster

Publications and Research

The present study will investigate the perceptions of information professionals about their role in the work of digital humanities scholars, as well as the perceptions of digital humanities scholars on the role of information professionals in their research. While other scholarly literature has considered collaborations between these groups via surveys or interviews with small project teams, the present study will provide a large-scale analysis of collaborations using survey responses from more than 500 scholars, librarians, and archivists. Questions sought to determine the extent to which these groups collaborate with one another on project teams; how these collaborations unfold and who …
