Comparing Electronic Vs. Print Book Preferences Between Students In The Social Sciences, The Arts And Stem, Lee Cummings, Anne Larrivee, Leslie Vega

The purpose of this study was to determine if there were any distinct differences in e-book usage habits among students in the social sciences, technical fields and the arts. To complete this study, students from three different disciplinary areas were surveyed. The same nine questions were posed to each student group, with slight modifications to some questions based on the discipline.The results of this study show that students in each discipline have a preference for convenience and accessibility, whether material is print or electronic. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. As part of its participation in the Google Books government documents scanning project, the Purdue University Libraries agreed to contribute volumes of the Congressional Serial Set (CSS). Realizing that the results would be far more useful if the individual documents within this title were cataloged separately, librarians developed procedures to create brief records and began cataloging CSS documents from the 1890s. The University of Iowa became a partner in this collaborative pilot project, and its cataloging staff used the Purdue template and procedures to create records from the CSS for individual documents from two years in the 1890s. …

When Purdue University’s College of Education decided to offer its first fully online master’s program in Learning Design and Technology, the education librarian volunteered to find and organize all the course readings by creating a LibGuide web page with links to the readings for each course. This paper analyzes these course readings, delivered to distance education students through links to the library’s electronic holdings, between January 2012 and June 2014. The future of books and libraries is put into question by the increasing popularity of e-books and the use of computers as text platforms. In an effort to anticipate which reading platform—print, e-readers, or computers displays—will dominate in the coming years, recent research and experimental data on the suitability of each reading platform for reading comprehension will be considered, from the perspectives of optical issues, cognition, and metacognition. The collection provides a view of the early days of colonization in the Santa Clara Valley and the growth of the mission culture.

The University of Kentucky (UK) is participating as a Center of Excellence (COE) for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries‘ (ASERL) Collaborative Federal Depository Program (CFDP). This collaborative effort is designed to distribute collection development for all Federal agencies across the entire Southeast.

We will describe how all depositories are working together to ensure that there are at least two complete collections for each federal agency somewhere in the Southeast, and how UK has focused its depository collection development efforts on non-COE agencies.

This study examines the primers collected in the de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection at the University of Southern Mississippi. “The de Grummond Children’s Literature Collection is one of North America’s leading research centers in the field of children’s literature,” with a main focus on American and British literature both historical and contemporary (lib.usm.edu). Specific characteristics of the primers examined in this study include publication year, publisher, and stories and illustrations used in the content. These data provide a general view of the development of the primer both for educative and socio-political purposes over time.

A Brief Historical Evolution Of The International Tracing Service (Its): The Largest Collection Of Holocaust Related Documents, Kate Brunelle

The International Tracing Service is the largest repository for World War II records, including Holocaust records. However, it was not until recently that the ITS opened its records to researchers and institutions outside of Germany. Previously, survivors and others could write to the ITS and request information about themselves or others, but the response time was long, difficult, and often lacking in tangible results. With the opening of the ITS, people around the world have better access to the records for seemingly endless research. Includes a case study.

In a time of increasing financial pressures on universities, the expense of library resources—and the potential for cost inflation—threaten the academic library collection. This article asks whether the academic library media center will be able to continue to offer a stable inventory of films, given the legal and commercial structures currently in place. It provides a history of the film industry’s interactions with its intermediaries, forecasts some of the obstacles to ongoing feature film affordability and access in libraries, offers strategies for librarians, and suggests some cause for hope.

How much difference does a year make? This presentation continued the discussion about acquisitions policies and workflows in a next-generation ILS that began at the 2013 Charleston Conference. The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2013, the Alliance began a 2-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a shared ILS in order to realize efficiencies and increase collaboration within the consortium. Migrating in 4 cohorts every 6 months, the last cohort of 10 institutions will go live with Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo in January …

Developed by industry to refine their manufacturing processes, Lean principles can be equally effective when applied to library processes and procedures. Lean management aims to reduce waste (in terms of time, energy, and resources), streamline operations, increase efficiency, and maximize value for customers (or, in our case, patrons). In times of shrinking budgets and increasing patron demand for library services, these considerations are especially valuable. Evaluating and revising library processes and procedures according to Lean principles will result in less time spent on housekeeping duties and more time spent on projects that truly matter. Many academic libraries are implementing discovery services as a way of giving their users a single comprehensive search option for all library resources. These tools are designed to change the research experience, yet very few studies have investigated the impact of discovery service implementation. This study examines one aspect of that impact by asking whether usage of publisher-hosted journal content changes after implementation of a discovery tool. Libraries that have begun using the four major discovery services have seen an increase in usage of this content, suggesting that for this particular type of material, discovery services have a positive impact …
