From The Archives: Rediscovering The John Preston Papers, Isabella Sumner

The John Preston, MD Papers, the newest collection at the McGovern Historical Center, contain letters and institutional records documenting life at the Austin State Lunatic Asylum—now Austin State Hospital—during Dr. Preston's 36 years as superintendent. Materials include correspondence from patient's families, physicians, judges, sheriffs, and attorneys, along with budgets, patient records, and even menus for staff and patients. Together, they offer a window into mental health care in Texas during the early 20th century.

The Texas Tech University (TTU) Digital Scholarship Lab (DSL) often collaborates on digitization projects with the Southwest Collection (SWC) archives. Within the past three years the DSL has branched out to new sources of projects, including university research institutions, other colleges and departments, and Lubbock community entities. At times, these partnerships became entangled with the SWC’s collecting goals, resulting in the need for expanded and more effective communication about integrated project management. Jadughar or the House of Magic is what people call a 'museum' in parts of South Asia. The practice of museum making, at its origin, is the act of collecting, preserving, interpreting and representing a culture’s tangible and intangible heritage to make it accessible to diverse audiences. Since the early 19th century such practices have been performed at various kala bhandars (art centers) in India, without the need of a formal or institutional organisation. On April 5th, 2005, the first article was deposited in DigitalCommons@TMC. Since then, 44.1k items have been deposited into our institutional repository. On average, DigitalCommons@TMC is viewed on average by 185+ countries, 3200+ institutions, seeing 185k downloads monthly. Audio visual streaming materials have been hosted on DigitalCommons@TMC since 2023, and the system counts more than 1,750+ streams.

Jurnal Ilmu Informasi, Perpustakaan, dan Kearsipan

This study addresses the prevalent issue of unethical user behavior towards library collections, which threatens their preservation. The main objective is to analyze the forms and underlying causes of these behaviors at the Library and Archives Service (Dispusip) of North Sumatra Province. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, utilizing direct observation, photographic documentation, and brief interviews as its methods. The results indicate a significant occurrence of unethical practices, such as page-folding (dog-earing), underlining or scribbling on pages, and mis-shelving books. These actions are categorized as “covert vandalism” and a lack of systemic awareness, stemming from a low sense …

Decolonizing The Academic Library: Examining The Successful Indigenization Of Ubc And Unm’S Library Services, Emily T. Villars

This article examines decolonization and indigenization initiatives at two academic libraries: the University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of New Mexico (UNM). It asks how these institutions have implemented indigenization in their libraries and what lessons can inform broader reconciliation work across North America. Through a comparative lens, it analyzes how national and organizational frameworks, such as the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA-FCAB) Truth and Reconciliation Report and Recommendations and the American Indian Library Association’s (AILA) organizational goals, can shape these efforts. The study highlights three core strategies: decolonizing access and classification, transforming library spaces, and expanding …
