Libraries frequently rely on variously calculated cost-per-usage (CPU) metrics, but there are other key performance indicators (KPIs) often more strategic for journal collection assessment. These other KPIs can also be more effective for communicating the value of journals. While CPU, in a variety of forms, will probably always be important for evidence-based decision-making, CPU can sometimes obfuscate the real value provided by journal packages and individual journals. At Minnesota State University Mankato (MNSU), we have been exploring new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for journal packages. Most recently, we started developing subject-package measures as a category, including as a measure of utility or as a measure of supply. Although we could previously combine filters per subject and per package, this caused us to narrow data to a single subject. Now, we can display the results for all subjects and packages as one table, which empowers us to make comparisons easily, to understand the value we gain from our packages better, and to see any subject impacts of cancellations …

With data provided by a colleague, the author looked at the University of Nebraska Consortium of Libraries (UNCL) downloading activity of Elsevier's Freedom Collection for the 2017-2021 interval. Members include the University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska Medical Center, and University of Nebraska Omaha.

The author looked at activity by member and by subject at the level of journals' Library of Congress Classifications.

This report was submitted in the fall of 2022 to the UNL Libraries Collections Strategies Committee (CSC) and to the members of the Collections Strategies and Open Scholarship (CSOS) department.

Because the field of librarianship has been reconsidering its relationship to commercial academic publishers and their 'Big Deal' journal packages, the authors decided to review the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's usage of Wiley's package. In this report, the authors looked into whether UNL's downloads by subject were such that subscribing to a number of hypothetical smaller, subject-specific packages, rather than to the entire Wiley package, might be a viable strategy.

Non-librarians often have the mistaken idea that because a publication is online it is cheaper than print, and that libraries actually save money by going fully digital. The truth is, academic libraries pay many, many more times above list price for providing the convenience of online institutional access, and the prices increase each year. We hope the following infographic will give our users a sense for how much annual subscriptions to popular medical journals and journal packages cost the TMC Library.

However, with the maturation of web-based music audio databases, web-based video databases, online music scores, electronic books and reference material, and commercial audio/visual streaming services, the format of material is also now an important collection consideration. Because the field of librarianship has been examining its relationship to commercial academic publishers and their 'Big Deal' journal packages, the authors elected to examine one such package, Wiley's. The authors' hoped to determine whether the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's usage was concentrated enough and consistent enough over a multi-year interval for download data to be useful in identifying journals for hypothetical individual subscriptions or for inclusion in a hypothetical smaller, UNL-specific package.

This report presents a snapshot of the research output of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at the University of Arkansas for the period 2015-2019. The contents of the report were generated using Web of Science Core Collection databases and the Journal Citation Report only. It highlights the journals in which the researchers published and the ranking of those journals.

The Effects Of Discipline Membership And Experience In The Field On Scholars’ Book And Journal Format Preferences, Ana Dubnjakovic

Using data from Ithaka S + R US Faculty Survey 2015, the current study examined the influence of disciplinary differences and experience levels as well as their interactions on scholars’ attitudes toward print and electronic materials. While results of 3 × 5 factorial ANOVA procedure indicated both disciplinary membership and experience played a role in scholars’ attitudes, effect size indicated disciplinary membership played a more crucial role. Significant findings include rising popularity of electronic formats across examined groups.

However, academic libraries are challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space availability, and some have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing or supplementing print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and open access journals. As a result of continual resource inflation and a decreasing budget, Kansas State University Libraries were required to conduct a large-scale electronic journal cancellation project. The current organizational model does not require librarian subject specialists to perform comprehensive collection development duties; therefore, content development librarians developed a methodology of collecting quantitative and qualitative statistics to collaboratively evaluate journals. This article will demonstrate the methodology of assessment, and serve as a working model for libraries operating under circumstances of labor shortages, budget cuts, and leadership restructuring.

Effective electronic resources management is comprised of ever evolving complex processes. One especially challenging component is to seamlessly ensure continuity of access and service to transferred journals, or journals that have changed publishers. The aspect that is particularly problematic throughout this process is the tracking of these changes. In the past at Rowan University Library, this process had not been monitored proactively. The concern today is to ensure that these changes are tracked so as to not interrupt the user’s research.

At Minnesota State University, Mankato, we’ve created a tool to provide journal collection analysis and evaluation (JCAE) reports which bring together a wide variety of data in one place. These reports can include Scimago journal evaluative data, any number of COUNTER JR1s, cost and payment data from the integrated library system or from vendor licenses, holdings data from the knowledgebase, subject data from indexes, Scimago, or the knowledgebase, journal data from Ulrich’s, custom data from academic departments, and more, as well as calculations based …

Journals which have been indexed in universal citation databases can introduce their countries’ scientific productions to the world’ scientific communications. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate Iranian Medical English Journals (IMEJ) based on Scopus’ journal selection criteria. This is a descriptive quantitative study which deals with the last issues of 52 numbers of IMEJ which have not been indexed in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. In 2014 Wayne State University closed its Science & Engineering Library (SEL) converting the building into a mediated storage collection. In 2017 the University received funding from the State of Michigan to convert the SEL into lab and classroom space intended to support our various STEM programs. This project would have a significant impact on our print journal collection, system wide, due to the 600,000 volumes housed in SEL and the limited available space to absorb them in other parts of the library system. Objective: The references are an important component of citation analysis. In this study, it is aimed to determine the reference analysis of Iranian Medical English Journals (IMEJ) based on WOS, Scopus and PubMed journal selection criteria.

Methods: This study is a descriptive quantitative analysis which deals with the last issues of 52 numbers of IMEJ which haven't been indexed in WOS, Scopus, and PubMed. The data were collected observing the journals data provider websites and then entered into a checklist tool. MS Excel software was used for data analysis.

The current mix of subscriptions, interlibrary loan or document delivery, and pay per view is unsustainable for endangered library budgets, and thus is unsustainable for publishers. Collections At Risk: Revisiting Serial Cancellations In Academic Libraries, Tina E. Chrzastowski, Karen A. Schmidt

Staff publications, research, and presentations

In 1993, Tina E. Chrzastowski and Karen A. Schmidt published a longitudinal study of serial cancellations from five midwestern academic research libraries. 1 The study found that actual title cancellation overlap was small (4.3%), meaning that many unique titles were being cancelled. A profile for an "at-risk" serial title, one most likely to be cancelled, was also determined. The titles most often cancelled were English-language titles in the sciences having a higher-than-average subscription price. The present study builds on the original research, adding two more years of cancellation data as well as serial order data. Results show that the rate …

The proliferation of publications in the lesbian, Gay, bisexual, and transgender press has allowed the weaving of a well-informed network of previously isolated individuals and communities, empowering and unifying lesbian, gay, and other sexual minorities," Dan Tsang and Polly Thistlethwaite wrote in the introduction to the 'Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender' section of Katzes' 1995 edition of Magazines for Libraries.
