This article discusses the nature of Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems with regard to the problems they pose to traditional exceptions to copyright restrictions. Problems of fair use and the copying of material for preservation are examined in the context of the architecture of digital rights management systems, and the limitations of current DRM systems in accommodating these policies are examined. The monitoring of usage by the licensing modules of these systems is also criticized for its lack of protection of user privacy and the potential chilling of intellectual freedom. This original research described a comparison of 50 composition topics taken from my library instruction sessions with Reference Universe versus simple keyword searching of the online catalog. Pete and I concluded that twenty-three percent of the "good" hits in Reference Universe were also found in OPAC search and that the OPAC search found fewer "good" hits overall; but also found different relevant resources.

The purpose of this article is to describe an assessment project of the monograph collection at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Lied Library. The circulation statistics and in-house use of all monographs for the nine colleges at UNLV were assessed analyzing the last five years of data. The analysis included an assessment of the circulation statistics and in-house use of books purchased on an approval plan compared with books purchased by individual liaison librarians. The findings illustrated the fact that overall use of the monograph collection has declined over the past five years. The findings also showed that …

Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams

As more scholarly and research materials are created in digital formats, institutions charged with managing, preserving, and disseminating these materials are increasingly adopting specialized software tools and environments created to fulfill these functions. Concurrently, subscriptions to serials databases provided by academic publishers are increasingly prohibitive and problematic. This paper surveys the adoption of digital institutional repositories by research institutions in the New York City region as of the Spring of 2009, and concludes that in spite of their potential advantages these systems are still not widely applied toward addressing the issues of preservation and access to their fullest potential.

Abstract

To help enhance the delivery of materials to end users, Taiwanese libraries launched four major programs to disseminate information and promote the widespread public usage of library materials. These programs, BookStart, Book Express Service, Cross Campus Delivery, and Delivery for the Visually Impaired, have proven to be quite successful in reaching their diverse population targets by addressing the specific needs for information services of those populations. This paper traces the history and development of library consortia in China from 1980 to the present. It also gives examples and descriptions of various types of library consortia in China, including academic, public, special, multi-type library consortia at the regional and national level.

Using Link Resolver Reports For Collection Management, Eva Stowers, J. Cory Tucker

In 2007–2008, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Libraries conducted a large collection assessment project. The Collection Assessment Committee identified several possible ways to conduct the review, one of which was using reports from the link resolver SFX. The committee used several link resolver reports in conjunction with statistics from the Libraries' document delivery department to identify trends in journal usage among disciplines. The link resolver reports can help identify new journals for purchase and are useful for providing information on user behavior.
