Serials Renewal Cycle: Doing It The Smu (A Different U) Way!, Kai Leong Heng

Academic libraries typically renew their serials subscriptions (Individual print and/or online titles) annually by comparing prices, availability and service terms proposed by different subscription agents. In Singapore (and possibly other countries in the region), we have only up to 3 (active and competing) subscription agents to choose from. At Singapore Management University (SMU), the library maintains about 500 serials titles. The “legacy” practice had been to split the order between the two of larger agents and designate a staff each to take charge of related operational matters. Optimizing Kbart Guidelines To Restore Perpetual Access, Kelly M. Blanchat

After experiencing a 25-percent decrease in the collection budget, the Queens College Libraries (QCL) faced losing electronic journal content with cancellations to Big Deal licensing agreements. By using tools such as Serials Solutions, Ex Libris SFX and Microsoft Excel, the library was able to optimize KBART guidelines to analyze and restore journal titles under perpetual access licensing clauses. The implemented workflow mirrored the process to create “Big Deal” renewal spreadsheets at Springer Science + Business Media.

This book chapter examines two futures for academic librarians working in access (technical) services: deeper collaboration on data management with faculty and student researchers and expanded access to library resources on the Semantic Web. Both are concerned with data organization, discovery, access, and support of shared data beyond the library. The chapter examines many aspects of research data from the perspectives of researchers and librarians. A Primer On How To Launch An Institutional Repository Successfully, Larry Sheret, Thomas L. Walker Ii, Gretchen Rae Beach, Jingping Zhang

This is a case study about the implementation of an institutional repository (IR) at Marshall University. Libraries have always collected information from a worldwide marketplace and have disseminated these resources locally. The IR has created a new function for the library by making it practical to acquire locally developed resources and to disseminate them freely worldwide. This has altered the traditional role of librarians and suggests a broader set of implications for the future usefulness and relevancy of the IR as doors open to new partnerships that will strengthen the university and the library’s place within it.

Building on a presentation given at the 2013 Charleston Conference, this article continues the discussion about acquisitions policies, workflows, and consortial collaboration in a next‐generation shared ILS. The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2013, the Alliance began a two‐year process of migrating all 37 institutions (in 4 cohorts, with a new cohort going live every 6 months) to Ex Libris’s Alma and Primo in order to realize efficiencies and increase collaboration within the consortium. When the OCLC Bibliographic Notification service was re-incarnated as the WorldShare Collection Manager MARC Update Service, VCU Libraries was eager to sign on. We wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to update our Alma Institution Zone records automatically with RDA fields, FAST subject headings, added content notes, etc. We have created special Alma import profiles, normalization and merge rules to process our MARC Update files, frequently updating several thousand records each work day

The Technical Services and Library Systems Division of the University at Albany Libraries conducted an internal customer service survey to gauge customer satisfaction with its services. Survey results demonstrated that customer surveys are a valuable assessment tool. Technical services and library systems units should use this tool to identify whether customers are satisfied with the services provided, whether the services are still needed, whether additional services are needed, and more. This presentation provides an approach to conducting a customer service survey, an analysis of potential benefits, and a survey instrument that others could adapt to use in their own libraries.

Primarily a collection development tool, the database provides titles of print and electronic books, Web sites, and databases deemed essential by subject specialists for four- and two-year college and vocational and technical school library collections. Cost-per-use for electronic journals has become a common standard for judging the value of individual titles, but the reports needed to make such judgments can be complex and time consuming to create. Different options exist for collecting, collating, and reporting the necessary data. In 2013, time spent by staff at the University of Mississippi library on all of the processes to create a cost-per-use report for the library’s subscription lists was recorded and a value in staff salaries was calculated. While traditionally libraries are very good at counting (books, patrons, reference questions, etc.), the question of value can no longer be answered by quantifying things and activities. In fact, it is challenging to try to assess and assign value to the services and resources provided by libraries. Increasingly libraries are asked to communicate their value to their stakeholders more effectively by providing evidence of outcomes related to user experience and institutional mission and goals. Several library associations have recently published reports delineating the value of libraries to the constituents.

The Case Of The Disappearing E-Book: Academic Libraries And Subscription Packages, Helen Georgas

One of the standard models for e-book licensing in academic libraries is the subscription package. This study is a one-year analysis of "disappeared" titles from ebrary's Academic Complete™ collection. During 2013, 3462 titles were deleted. Deleted titles were mainly recent publications (published within the last ten years), with a high number of deletions within the broad subject areas of the social sciences (H), language and literature (P), and history (C, D, E, F). Deleted titles were evenly divided between monographs published by popular presses, and monographs published by scholarly or university presses. It is recommended that deleted titles be closely …
