Collections And Space: An Update On Syracuse University Libraries' Journals Migration Project, K. Matthew Dames, Roberta B. Gwilt, Scott A. Warren, T. C. Carrier

To date, the Libraries have transferred to The Facility more than 100,000 volumes, including 7,000 journal titles, across all disciplines. By migrating these journals from Bird Library to The Facility, the Libraries will save the University more than $1.9 million within five years. Continued strategic use of The Facility helps the Libraries manage principal collections whose aggregate value exceeds $200 million. This paper reports on the progress of the Libraries’ journals migration project, provides additional context and data that led to the spring 2014 approval for the project from the provost.

This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. Important trends in scholarly communication, such as transitioning from subscription journals to open access journals, increasing amounts of “born digital” data and creative works, the growing importance of protecting one’s intellectual property rights, and keeping digital scholarship organized, managed, and preserved, are all areas where academic scholars and researchers require support services and assistance. Librarians are natural partners to provide these services.

Find out how one University Library undertook a reference-weeding project to pare three reference collections down from 12,000 titles. The poster will discuss the motivations for reviewing the reference collection, the data gathered to support decision making, the challenges encountered in the project, and estimates for the costs associated with such a weeding project.

Ebook Showdown: Evaluating Academic Ebook Platforms From A User Perspective, Christina Mune, Ann Agee

The continuing growth of ebook purchases through librarian selection and demand driven acquisitions (DDA) has resulted in an explosion of ebook platform usage. This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis done on the features, usability and accessibility of academic ebook platforms such as ebrary, EBL, Safari, Springer, and Wiley. This research was done across platforms (iOS, Windows, Android) and included testing with a variety of the most prominent accessible technologies.

Collection Microclimates – Citation Study Of Journal Usage Differences At Department And Research Group Level, Ian Mccullough

Research, Publications, and Presentations

Citations from journal articles and dissertations from the Department of Polymer Science (DPS) at the University of Akron from 2006–2011 were examined and journals ranked in order of usage frequency. Journal usage of dissertations and articles was also ranked within research groups. 85 dissertations and 464 faculty publications that included 378 publications from 16 dissertation advisors were examined. Citations to 1422 journals were counted and recorded. Findings demonstrate that individual groups vary wildly in journal usage representing microclimates for collection development purposes.

Every two years, the ACRL Research Planning and Review Committee releases an environmental scan of higher education, including developments with the potential for continuing impact on academic libraries. The 2015 environmental scan provides a broad review of the current higher education landscape, with special focus on the state of academic and research libraries. The document builds on earlier ACRL reports, including the Top Trends in Academic Libraries. The 2015 environmental scan is freely available on the ACRL website (PDF). This presentation highlights key elements of the 2015 environmental scan.

Multimedia Resources Statistics: Understanding Usage Of Non-Text Resources, Jen Hoyer, Katie O'Connell, Elizabeth A. Tietjen

As budget cuts are a constant threat and resource costs continue to rise, libraries rely on usage data to be sure that they are delivering the content faculty and students need. Simultaneously, patrons are increasingly accessing multimedia content in the library, and usage reporting standards, like COUNTER’s Release 4, have adapted to reflect this use. This poster explores whether usage of text and non-text resources be compared according to the same measurements, as well as what best practices have emerged, and what gaps remain in current reporting methods.

For decades, popular culture was neglected and frowned upon by academics. In recent years, cultural critics, including librarians, have found popular culture materials to be didactic tools, and vital to the study of society and the zeitgeist that has prevailed at the time of their production. As a result, many academic librarians have found it useful to develop collections in their libraries that reflect a range of sociological change as demonstrated in these resources. With diligence and research, academic collection development managers may choose materials that will enhance the role of popular culture in their libraries

The Center for Adventist Research (CAR), an Andrews University and General Conference of Seventh-day Adventist organization, seeks to promote an understanding and appreciation of the heritage and mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA). It combines the resources of the James White Library’s Adventist Heritage Center and the Ellen G. White Estate Branch Office to provide the most extensive collection of Adventist-related resources in the world, both physically and digitally. An introduction to the background, collections, and activities of CAR is presented. Of particular interest are the digitization projects.

Since its very beginning there have been connections between the people of IMSA and the world.
