The Indian experience with Outbound Programmes has clearly been a mixed one. With the initial euphoria passing over, managements are beginning to wonder if management development is getting to be more and more like branded potato chips - puffed up and pricey but the same old stuff inside. Indeed there is every possibility of the Outbound Programme going the way of all other bandwagons: into the clearance sale shelves of the management supermarket. Padaki and Venkatesh attempt to demystify Outbound Programmes (OP) and provide guidelines to organisations contemplating OP, on how to prepare for a worthwhile OP experience, what to look for …

Redefining The Role Of Public Sector Undertakings: The Case Of Iti, S S Motial
IIMB Management Review
In keeping with the economic climate, the Government of India changed its long standing industrial policy in 1991, allowing the private sector into areas earlier reserved for public sector units. Telecom equipment manufacture was also thrown open to the private sector, thus ending the monopoly of the protected ITI, the country's oldest PSU. The company suffered heavy losses and in 1996-97, was declared potentially sick. However, rigorous turn-around strategies brought ITI back on its feet by the end of fiscal 1997. Along with an account of ITI's valiant fight back, a new role for PSUs in the changed environment is …

Corporate Governance In India: Disciplining The Dominant Shareholde, Jayanth Rama Varma
IIMB Management Review
Corporate governance problems in India are very different from that of, say, the US or the UK where the issue is essentially that of disciplining the management who have ceased to be effectively accountable to their owners. The problem of the Indian corporate sector is that of disciplining the dominant shareholder and protecting the minority shareholders. The role of two such disciplining forces - the regulator and the capital market has been discussed.
