Currently, there are 262 resource-based cities in China, of which mature and declining cities account for 79.39%. These cities have made significant contributions to the country’s economic and social development, but now they are facing severe challenges and difficulties, and their transformation problems urgently need to be solved. Researchers have produced varying conclusions on the matter of coexistence of economic activities with the protection or improvement of environmental performance. This study investigates the association between greenfield investments, economic activity, institutional quality, and environmental performance in Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) countries from 2003 to 2022. Yale University's Environmental Performance Index (EPI) assesses environmental performance. Advanced second-generation econometrics estimation approaches address concerns like cross-sectional dependence, potential endogeneity, and heterogeneity. Further analysis is employed across four income-level sub-panels: lowincome (LI), lower-middle-income (LMI), upper-middle-income (UMI), and high-income (HI) countries, covering the years 2003 to 2021 to validate reliability and consistency. The primary objectives of this study are threefold: first, to investigate whether the challenges faced by micro and small industries motivate them to enter into partnerships; second, to assess the impact of partnerships on company productivity; and third, to explore the causal relationship between productivity and exports. We aim to determine whether productivity influences exports and vice versa or if a two-way relationship exists. This thesis examines the effects of extreme market shocks on supply chain dynamics within the automotive industry. Through an analysis of demand data from an automotive manufacturer to its component suppliers (January 2018 to May 2024), the study investigates the relationship between market shocks and supply chain responses, providing insights into how auto components inventory management handles downstream responses to market shocks. This research bridges two influential strands of literature on urban China—state entrepreneurialism and homo urbanicus (城市人). By revisiting how China’s post-reform urban transformation has unfolded and connecting it to current development strategies, this research provides a fresh perspective on the country’s urbanization processes and their implications for future governance. The analysis proposes an alternative periodization of three phases: anti-migration urbanism, anti-settlement urbanism, and anti-civitas urbanism. Social Capital, Post-Industrial Society, And Faulty Industry Experience: Higher Education’S Engagement Opportunity In Applied Disciplines, Asa B. Wilson, Steven A. Stovall, Edward Crowley

Higher education faces two currents - declining social capital support and the post-industrial transition. Both impact the academy and its students. The associated challenges are discussed as engagement opportunities for the academy in applied disciplines. Also, the instructional value of faculty industry experience (IE) is defined as an attribute of social capital. It fosters student engagement while building an experiential learning bridge from the classroom to the workplace. A composite case based on faculty social capital backgrounds illustrates how faculty IE augments program development, academic rigor, student readiness, research creativity, industry linkages, and community impact. Follow-up research opportunities are identified.

Cartel Breakdown: The Impact Of Demonopsonization On Market Concentration, Nathan Ashby, Miguel A. Ramos-Gonzalez

The exogenous removal of labor restrictions mandated by Alston vs. NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) has provided a unique natural experiment for analyzing the impact of demonopsonization on market concentration. Using basketball tournament data between 2003 and 2024 we find evidence of increased concentration in performance among higher-tiered programs. The larger magnitude of estimates for women’s programs likely results from wider dispersion in market demand for participating programs predating the reforms. We also analyze parity in regular-season conference play and fail to detect a relationship between the changes and dispersion for higher-tiered conferences, but we do find a relationship for …

Employer-employee relationships exist commonly in workplaces and are important for people to understand the interactions between employers and employees and also their own behavior. This dissertation presents studies of different aspects of employer-employee relationships using laboratory experiments. Chapter 1 studies how the problematic nature of many middle management positions drive middle managers to interact with their employees in a negative way in workplaces, as they are under pressure from upper management to extract high effort from their employees, but given few incentives to do so. This dissertation is comprised of two essays; in the first, I develop a model to show that when there is a sufficiently large segment of uninformed consumers and an existing norm regarding the advertising of bundled good prices that price obfuscation through base good advertisements can be both: (1) profit maximizing, and (2) result in an equilibrium where only some firms obfuscate. I provide the first empirical evidence of this setting by estimating the increase in prices charged by retail gasoline stations, finding a statistically and economically significant obfuscating premium of 5-7 cents per gallon. Digital intelligence is an important lever for traditional industries to achieve the transformation of old and new kinetic energy and the leapfrogging of the global value chain. This study firstly deconstructs the rich connotations of digital intelligence from the perspectives of digitalization, networkization, and intelligentization. The integrated circuit (IC) industry is highly complex and systematic, and its key core technology breakthroughs are highly dependent on the support of systematic capabilities. The West especially the United States has accelerated the promotion of the “small-yard, high-fence” strategy, the “New Washington Consensus”, the “de-risking”, and other systematic policies to curb China’s rise. With the rapid growth of demand for lithium, cobalt, and nickel, China, the United States, and the European Union have classified them as critical minerals. This study investigates the rise of China’s and the global electric vehicle industry in relation to the demand for lithium, cobalt, and nickel, forecasts the potential for recycling these metals, and evaluates the challenges to resource security of these metals faced by China. The findings underscore the necessity of enhancing international collaboration in mineral extraction abroad and enhancing capabilities to safeguard overseas assets and equity.
