How Affirmative Is Affirmative?, Shu-Fen Hsu
How Affirmative Is Affirmative?, Shu-Fen Hsu
Theses
Since January 1989, the US Supreme Court has launched a major offensive on affirmative action and civil rights law. The biggest target of the attack is Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which bars employment discrimination. As a result, access to private and public contracts for all but the largest black businesses will virtually be nonexistent. For black means decreasing employment and mobility opportunities in the workplace. In addition, complainants will have a more difficult time bringing forth and winning discrimination suits. Racial tension now has a stronger - although subtler - presence in the US. The ascent …
How Effective Is The Union Title Vii Grievance Procedures, Yu-Wen Liu
How Effective Is The Union Title Vii Grievance Procedures, Yu-Wen Liu
Theses
Title VII forbids certain kinds of discrimination in employment and establishes a federal forum to enforce employee's rights. It means an employer discriminates against any individual in hiring or discharging, because of such individual's race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.
It has been a long time to use Title VII in unlawful practice employment. Therefore, in my thesis, I investigate the development of labor law, special for the development of Title VII of the Civil Right Act of 1964. Secondly, I emphasize on the individual and union that they can effectively make use of their rights under Title VII. …
Taiwan's Economic Development, Liwen Chang
Taiwan's Economic Development, Liwen Chang
Theses
Development, by definition, brings new resources into a society that allow for a higher standard of living. Many developing nations which changed from a traditional survival type society to a self-supporting society experienced a high rate of economic growth after the World War II. No matter what route these countries or regions took to success, in the process of development they all faced similar international trade and balance of payments problems.
This paper presents a case study of Taiwan as a developing country's model. Taiwan certainly qualifies as a successful example of development. Although there is really no complete normative …
Towards An Understanding Of Women's Status In The Labor Force, Despina Papageorgiou
Towards An Understanding Of Women's Status In The Labor Force, Despina Papageorgiou
Theses
The thesis examines the status of women in the labor force from the economic and sociological point of view. It explores both the occupational segregation and the differences in earnings.
None of the existing theories provides a sufficient explanation either of the causes of the problems, or of the effects of women's position in the labor force. Each study has its limitations.
The previous studies failed to predict the dynamic effects of the changes that rapidly take place in the business environment and the increasing demand for highly qualified and experienced professionals. These changes facilitated women's entrance to top-management positions …
Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao
Japanese Management Techniques And The Civil Rights Act Of 1964 (Title Vii), Doris S. Mao
Theses
Japanese management techniques have been praised for its high efficiency and quality output. However, when these same techniques are transplanted in the United States, the results have been less than desirable. This thesis will investigate how the nature of the Japanese management system lends itself to employment discriminations which have resulted in court cases against Japanese firms in US.
The thesis will firstly identify the unique characteristics of Japanese management techniques and the reasons behind the efficient operations of Japanese firms. Since the Japanese management system is based on a paternal concept which identifies the corporation as the "second family", …

Outplacement Services : A Search For The Tools And Strategies That Improve Organizational Effectiveness, Geri P. Stowers
Theses
If outplacement is considered a necessity in this age of continuous mergers, acquisitions, and downsizing, then why do most companies find it difficult to utilize these services for all employees?
This thesis will assess previous research on outplacement and evaluate the reasons for limited use. A four page questionnaire containing nineteen questions was mailed to forty-two pharmaceutical and related industries. The survey questions focused on why and how these industries utilize outplacement services. A comparison study was done of the research versus what the pharmaceutical industries are actually practicing.
The results of the study revealed that most companies really do …
The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin
The Legal Studies Of Women Employees, Yi-Ling Lin
Theses
Discrimination against women in the workplace has always existed, but because few women in the United stated worked until the Second World War, it was not regarded as a major issue before then. Although Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 forbids employer and union discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, many available studies still showed that most women experienced discrimination in employment, especially in salary and promotion. In addition, there were a growing number of cases of sexual harassment in the workplace. This study was concerned with the implementation and effectiveness of legislation …
A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang
A Study Of Values And Managerial Practices, Po-Wen Chuang
Theses
The multinational corporations (MNCs) have been a major contributing factor to the rapid growth of the world economy since World War II. In recent years, multinational corporations are said to facilitate transfer of management techniques, thereby accelerating industrial growth, consumption, and a higher standard of living.
Research on multinational corporations has raised many issues, one of the most interesting issues being the transfer of technology within multinational corporations. Technology includes both the so called "hardware" technology such as capital labor ratio, product design and manufacturing methods, and "software" or managerial technology. Differences in managerial technology used by multinational corporations are …
Organization Design And Development, Chang-Wang Chen
Organization Design And Development, Chang-Wang Chen
Theses
As our knowledge of the behavioral science continues to increase, so also does our use of that knowledge. One of the most rapidly expanding fields in the development and application of behavioral science knowledge is organization development (OD). Not only are the behavioral sciences receiving more attention in all types of organizations, but many different countries are also becoming more involved in the human aspects of work. The innovations undertaken by McDonald's and Yamazaki Baking in the area of job enrichment is one indication of such interest.
Human needs are changing rapidly, as is the world itself. In terms of …

Self-Efficacy And Motivation : An Unexplored Relationship, Elizabeth Angela Dixon
Self-Efficacy And Motivation : An Unexplored Relationship, Elizabeth Angela Dixon
Theses
There is a need for models of motivation which emphasize individual differences. Many studies cited in the literature indicate that differences in personality influence work performance, and the way individuals react to various job stimuli. As such, research efforts should be directed towards examining the interaction between specific personality traits such as self-efficacy and motivation. When studies of this nature are conducted, motivational strategies aimed at improving performance, can be designed with more attention to individual differences.

Obstacles To Women Seeking Management Careers : What They Are, And How American Companies And Women Confront Them, Lih-Fang Chiou
Theses
The thesis focuses on the obstacles faced by women who enter management. It is understood from the literature that the obstacles facing women can be attributed to societal issues or external factors, and to internal obstacles which arise from the perception women have of themselves and their position in the labor force.
The purpose of this research is not to identify all of the obstacles. The focus, instead, is on how women and management respond to the obstacles and how they have created access to senior management positions.
In choosing a managerial career, the critical mission for women executives is …

A Study Of Techniques Of Performance Evaluation, Moses Oyewolfe Ogungbenro
Theses
Performance evaluation is a process that every one goes through in life. One may be the rater or the ratee. One of the basic questions an organization usually asks in establishing or revising a performance evaluation system is: What should the system accomplish, or what should be the technique to be used? The answer to this question varies from organization to organization. Today, we live in a world of organizations, each of us still makes many personal appraisals and subsequently, choices. For instance, we choose doctors, hairdressers, business advisors and others, largely on the basis of our judgements of their …

Messaging, The Effects Of The Use Of Voice Mail On The Use Of Electronic Mail, Terese M. De Troia
Theses
A number of office automation products have evolved over the years to address the messaging needs of organizations. The 1800's brought us telegraph systems which led the way for teletype and Telex systems, followed by facsimilie, computer-based message systems, document based electronic mail and, most recently, voice store and forward (or voice messaging) systems (Advances in Office Automation, 1985). Voice messaging systems, a newly emerging method of communications, are having a significant impact on communications. The concept of messaging services is rapidly gaining acceptance in business communities (Girishankar 1986, Hirschheim 1985). With costs rising and time becoming more valuable, organizations …

Theses
The effects of the merger upon the People Express Airline company is studied with particular emphasis upon changes in corporate culture and structure.
A case study approach utilizes an extensive literature search and interviews with People Express executives. It is confirmed that the structural change has led to the cultural change.
With a unique style of management structure and culture, People Express, due to its own mistakes and problems, quickly lost its market share and allowed itself to be taken over by Continental Airlines a subsidiary of Houston based Texas Air Corp.
It is interesting to note that the corporate …
A Model For Estimating The Cost Of Developing An Expert System, Louis Vincent De Troia
A Model For Estimating The Cost Of Developing An Expert System, Louis Vincent De Troia
Theses
This paper describes a model that can be used to assist engineers and managers in estimating the cost of developing an expert system. Numerous models are available for estimating the cost of developing conventional software systems [1] [2] [3]. However, relatively little work has been done in the area of expert systems cost estimation [3] [4].
Estimating the cost of any software development project is a difficult task, yet software developers are required to provide reliable estimates of the cost of development early in the development life cycle, quite often before many of the system requirements have been defined. While …

Productivity Through People : The Hewlett-Packard Way, Charles Serwedes
Theses
Petri nets have become a powerful tool for modeling and analyzing asynchronous concurrent systems. In this thesis I apply Petri nets for analyzing and modeling a flexible manufacturing workstation (FMS). A manufacturing workstation is modeled by using Colored- Timed Petri nets, with the consideration of tool handling, raw materials, quality checking and the reuse of reworkable scraps. A simulation program for a simplified Petri net model of manufacturing workstation is described and the production throughput is computed.
Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz
Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz
Theses
Human Resources Professionals are often faced with the issue of "the need for and usefulness of management training." In addition, small business people believe that the needed training is unwanted and, in somecases, impossible to deliver. On the other side of the issue, training supporters point to the need for knowledge, the constant obsolescence of learned skills and the highly competitive nature of the marketplace.
The argument continues that whereas managers in larger firms may be able to afford numerous in-house training programs or be able to send employees to assorted workshops and conferences, the manager in a small enterprise …
Empirical Study On Employee's Ownership, Anthony Chuks Ibida
Empirical Study On Employee's Ownership, Anthony Chuks Ibida
Theses
Employees Ownership in the United States has been in existence for many years and it seemed to be a utopian idea of no real consequence to the general public. Now employee ownership has gone a drastic change and it has become a major focus of media attention, and we are observing an extra ordinarily rapid increase in interest and involvement among practitioners in law, banking, and organizational consulting, along with growing government interest.
As the name indicates employees ownership or worker cooperative firms have a long but spotty history in the United States. Some researchers traced over eight hundred firms …
Management And Organizational Effectiveness Examined : Past Practices And Theories Versus The Future, Ronald J. Boyer
Management And Organizational Effectiveness Examined : Past Practices And Theories Versus The Future, Ronald J. Boyer
Theses
The primary objective for this thesis is to collect and analyze data on how a new model for business organizations might best be formulated. There seems to be a consensus among authorities in the field that because modern business practices are so complex, indeed they have been revolutionized in many areas in the past decade. New organizational techniques must be devised if organizations are to remain as effective and as efficient as in the previous area. Some have claimed that the present structural model has reached the point of no return-that is, no longer functional because of such factors as …
Analysis And Evaluation Of The "Pay For Savings" Concept : The Residential Energy Conservation Action Program (Recap), Glenn Owen Steiger
Analysis And Evaluation Of The "Pay For Savings" Concept : The Residential Energy Conservation Action Program (Recap), Glenn Owen Steiger
Theses
Recently, electric utilities have developed and implemented many methods to induce their customers to reduce consumption of electricity. One of the most unique concepts was developed by the General Public Utilities Corporation. Simply, it is the "Pay for Savings" concept which pays energy conservation contractors for actual (measured) energy saved, and not for the retrofit measures used to accomplish the savings. GPU has developed a program, Residential Energy Conservation Action Program, as a vehicle for this concept.
This thesis has attempted to describe the methodology used in implementing RECAP. More importantly, it has analyzed actual results of the program and …

Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere
Alternatives To Lay Off, Davidson Nwaneri Okere
Theses
In the recent years, there have been some changes in the American corporate life. These changes have been occasioned by some external factors which adversely affect the profitability of the companies. In order to address this problem, many corporations have resorted to cutbacks which more often than not, affect a great bulk of the human resources.
The purpose of this study therefore, is to explore the strategies which companies could use, rather than lay off, during business downturns; and still remain competitive and profitable.
Chapter one of this study focuses on what companies should do to help the affected workers …

Stress And Today's Working Woman, Tommie Mae Byers
Theses
The eighth wonder of the world is fast becoming the great American job machine The employment rate has declined in most industrial nations while 20 million jobs have been created in the U. S. during the past 10 years. The principal reason for this rise in job placements is the large influx of women into the labor force.
Two-thirds of the jobs created over the past decade have been seized by women. The post-industrial environment which has produced an extensive number of service-type businesses has substantially opened the job market for women. Financial experts will contend that an expanding labor …

The Cocoa Rehabilitation Project In Ghana, Kwane Boakye Dankwah
The Cocoa Rehabilitation Project In Ghana, Kwane Boakye Dankwah
Theses
Several studies have been done in an attempt to find out the cost involved in establishing an acre of cocoa farm and most of these used the questionnare method to gather the information. However, most data gathered this way did not include detail establishment cost information on inputs as the farmers relied on recollection of cost they incurred.
The study done by C. Okali at Dominasi in the Brong Ahafo Region did not follow this pattern. Data collection for this study was started in May 1971 and ended in September 1972 and there were 45 farms involved. This sample was …
