Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

In a recent issue of this Review, James Buchanan and Gordon Tullock (B-T) presented a public choice analysis of the relative merits of direct controls and taxes in externality control. In Section IV of their paper, B-T consider the case of reciprocal external diseconomies of consumption. They ask whether "... persons in this sort of interaction, acting through the political processes of the community, will impose on themselves either a penalty tax or direct regulation" (p. 143). Their analysis is carried out within the context of a two-person model in which each person consumes the same quantity of a …

The Life Cycle Hypothesis & Consumption Of Specific Items In The Family Budget, Boonkij Wongwaikijphaisal Nov 1976

The Life Cycle Hypothesis & Consumption Of Specific Items In The Family Budget, Boonkij Wongwaikijphaisal

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to the concept of the Life Cycle Hypothesis, the propensity to consume or the level of consumption cannot be explained by any specific variable but is dependent on a cluster of variables, from which transitory income effects have been removed. The main attempt of the paper is to test the life cycle variables to see if they significantly determine the variation of the percent of consumption spent on food, recreation, and education, respectively. The technique employed in doing so is Principal Component Analysis, which helps to eliminate multicollinearity, and lessens or eliminates the degree of freedom problem that occurs …

Wages, The Terms Of Trade, And The Exchange Rate Regime, Douglas D. Purvis Nov 1976

Wages, The Terms Of Trade, And The Exchange Rate Regime, Douglas D. Purvis

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper analyzes a two-commodity short-run macroeconomic model under fixed and flexible exchange rates. Goods are disaggregated into imports and exports. Both are consumed domestically, but only the latter is produced at home. While imports are available in international markets at a fixed price, relative size matters in that the country’s specialized export good faces a less than infinitely elastic foreign demand. The seemingly natural disaggregation used here yields a model that is better suited than traditional models for the analysis of such problems as imported inflation and for flexible exchange rates. Also, the terms of trade is explicit and …

The Economic Development Of Greece: The Post-World War Ii Period, John Chilas

Economics ETDs

The present dissertation attempts basically to describe the functioning of a developing economy like Greece, for the post-World War II period, in terms of twelve structural equations. It further demonstrates the usefulness of the system of equations in contributing to the solution of complex problems of economic forecasting and policy making. After a thorough examination of the major developments during the post-war years and the main characteristics and problems facing the Greek economy, the study presents the postulated theoretical and empirical foundations of the structure of the model. The structural equations are estimated basically by the method of single equation …

Price Information And The Economics Of Consumerism: A Model Of Stochastic Equilibrium, John Sutton Oct 1976

Price Information And The Economics Of Consumerism: A Model Of Stochastic Equilibrium, John Sutton

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A model of a quasi-competitive industry is constructed, in which the firm’s sales are described by a random variable whose expected rate of change depends on price. It is shown that a stationary (non-degenerate) distribution of prices results, so that price differences persist over time. It is further shown that, as consumers become more aware of, and responsive to, price differences between firms, the average price set by the (profit maximizing) firms tends to decrease, implying a reduction in the degree of monopoly in the industry.

James H. Burton And The Development Of The Confederate Small Arms Industry, Eugene K. Wilson Iii

History Theses & Dissertations

James H. Burton was a key figure in the development of the Confederate small arms industry. It was largely through his efforts that the C.S. Armory, Richmond was placed in operation as quickly as it was. The plan to establish a central, or national, armory in the deep South was attributable to him. Burton's European contacts, cultivated while organizing the Royal Armory at Enfield, professional acumen, personality and loyalty all contributed to a large degree to the success of the Confederate Ordnance Bureau despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
