Long-Run Debt-Income Model Of Consumer Installment Credit, Tseng Ho Wong
Long-Run Debt-Income Model Of Consumer Installment Credit, Tseng Ho Wong
Masters Theses
In the late forties and early fifties concern emerged in some economic circles because installment debt was growing more rapidly than income. Overextensions of debt in the long run were believed to jeopardize future prosperity of the economy. To demonstrate that the rate of growth of debt would not threaten future prosperity, A. Enthoven designed a debt-income growth model. Michael K. Evans reaffirmed Enthoven's conclusions in a later study. However, in 1964 and 1967, the model and its assumptions were attacked by Oliver and Chiu and Brosky, respectively.
This study tests again Enthoven's model and its assumptions using up-to-date data. …

Assessment Of Potential Mineral Shortages: Chromium, Cobalt, And Platinum, Howard H. Mcwilliams
Assessment Of Potential Mineral Shortages: Chromium, Cobalt, And Platinum, Howard H. Mcwilliams
Economics Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
This brief review indicates that the United States has experienced several specific geopolitical problems with the principal suppliers of chromite ore during the relatively recent past. It also indicates that a collective problem has occurred with only two of these suppliers, Rhodesia and South Africa. This lack of unification as regards specific difficulties between the United States and the major supplying nations makes a meaningful, long-term denial of chromite ore unlikely under presently existing international conditions. There is, however, one possible exception to this conclusion which must be mentioned. That is the extremely unlikely occurrence of large scale armed hostilities …

Experience With Pregnancy, The Demand For Prenatal Care And The Production Of Surviving Infants, Eugene M. Lewit
Experience With Pregnancy, The Demand For Prenatal Care And The Production Of Surviving Infants, Eugene M. Lewit
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The object of this research is to develop a model of household demand for prenatal care and attempt to measure the productive value of prenatal care per se on infant health as measured by survival. Traditionally, infant mortality rates have been used as indices of a nation's health status. Since the U.S. has lagged significantly behind other developed nations in reducing infant mortality since the mid-1950's, there have been charges of a malfunction in the U.S. health delivery system. Particularly in the area of infant health, critics have charged that more prenatal care Inputs are needed and that they should …

The Principle Of Unanimity And Voluntary Consent In Social Choice, Vernon L. Smith
The Principle Of Unanimity And Voluntary Consent In Social Choice, Vernon L. Smith
Economics Faculty Articles and Research
A discrete version of the author's incentive-compatible Auction Mechanism for public goods is applied to the problem of social choice (voting) among distinct mutually exclusive alternatives. This Auction Election is a bidding mechanism characterized by (1) unanimity, (2) provision for the voluntary compensation of voters harmed by a winning proposition, and (3) incentives for 'reasonable' bidding by excluding members of a collective from maximal increase in benefit if they fail to agree on the proposition with largest surplus. Four of five experiments with six voters, bidding privacy, monetary rewards, and cyclical majority rule structure choose the best of three propositions.
Regulation And Competition In The Motor Transportation Industry, Richard F. Hoogerwerf
Regulation And Competition In The Motor Transportation Industry, Richard F. Hoogerwerf
Graduate Thesis Collection
Evidence exists today which indicates that our present motor carrier regulatory system, rather than "protect the public interest", might actually inhibit the efficient provision of transportation services to the economy. Accepting such a view of the regulated motor transport market as valid, this thesis could serve as a model from which legislators might begin to re-write our motor carrier act. It is assumed throughout this work that such an undertaking is well overdue. The possible use of this thesis for such a purpose is its primary justification for existence.
In order to serve as a basis for such a legislative …

Business Policy And The Public Welfare, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Business Policy And The Public Welfare, Murray L. Weidenbaum
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
It is not a question of advocating for the elimination of all government intervention in the economy, as many government programs do generate important benefits to the public. This paper calls for a new way of thinking in public policymaking. This new paradigm must simultaneously help to achieve the nation's social goals while allowing business to pursue more efficient production of better goods and services.

The Rising Cost Of Government Regulation, Murray L. Weidenbaum, Robert Defina
Murray Weidenbaum Publications
In fiscal year 1976, the direct cost of federal government regulation of business hit an all time high. By 1978, the annual total federal regulatory cost will be approximately $3.8 billion, an 85% rise over the 1974 level. The most expensive sectors of federal regulatory activity are not focused on an individual industry, but are assigned to a broad category of social activities like the environment, energy, and consumer health and safety.
