A Multi-Year Analysis Of Irrigation Practices Affecting Salt Outflow: A Case Study In Uintah Basin, Joel R. Cannon May 1977

A Multi-Year Analysis Of Irrigation Practices Affecting Salt Outflow: A Case Study In Uintah Basin, Joel R. Cannon

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Colorado River is subject to a salinity problem which affects the downstream user. It has been suggested that approximately 40% of the salinity in the Colorado River results from irrigation return flow. The evapotranspiration process extracts nearly pure water for plant use leaving behind soluable salts which may become part of the return flow. These salts adversely affect the crop yield for the downstream user.

Farmers' contributions to the irrigation return flow have been criticized. With the criticisms have been many suggestions on salinity control, including restriction of salt outflow at the farm level through either voluntary or mandatory …

The Economics Of Architectural Conservation, Gary Lynn Peterson May 1977

The Economics Of Architectural Conservation, Gary Lynn Peterson

Economics ETDs

This thesis addresses the economic issues affecting investment in architectural conservation. The potential benefits of conserving architecturally and/or historically significant structures are private benefits accruing to the owners and positive externalities accruing to the public, such as increases in tourism and land values (to the extent these benefits are not internalized by the owners), option values, and existence values. If all of these benefits are not recognized and accounted for, an undervaluation of architectural conservation generally results, which inevitably leads to misallocation of resources. Other possible constraints to investment in architectural conservation include the slow, and sometimes costly, information process, …

Interpretations And Implementations Of Compulsory Free Enterprise Education In Utah Public High Schools, Marsha M. Campbell May 1977

Interpretations And Implementations Of Compulsory Free Enterprise Education In Utah Public High Schools, Marsha M. Campbell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The Utah legislature passed Senate Bill 203 in 1975, requiring all public secondary schools to offer instruction on the essentials and benefits of free enterprise. The problem is that no evaluation has been made to determine if the specific requirement is being fulfilled. The purpose of this study is to determine interpretations and implementations of Senate Bill 203. Questions in four areas were studied.

1. Administrators: (a) how did administrators of the districts interpret the guidelines, (b) how did the administrators decide upon the approach followed, (c) how did the administrators justify the approach followed, (d) what instructional materials did …

Capitalization Effects Of Property Tax Differentials, Paul Johnston Mcnutt May 1977

Capitalization Effects Of Property Tax Differentials, Paul Johnston Mcnutt

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The capitalization effect of property tax differentials for the four market quarters in 1976 was studied in the Logan, Utah market area. A secondary aspect of the study was to assess the variations in the assessed to market value ratio.

107 observed sales were used for the data set. Age of structure, square feet in structure, quality of neighborhood, and property tax were noted for each property sold.

From the regression analysis it was found that there was a significant capitalization of the tax differentials. The results indicate that a one-percent change in the property tax will result in a …

Income Distribution Effects Of Water Quality Controls: An Econometric Approach, Ming Chien Chen May 1977

Income Distribution Effects Of Water Quality Controls: An Econometric Approach, Ming Chien Chen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The imposition of water quality controls may affect the economy chiefly by altering aggregate production and changing the factor payments, These two effects could not only reallocate resources among production possibilities, but also could change the distribution of benefits of production among members of the society.

This study attempted to provide a workable theory to establish an empirical test of the impacts of water quality controls on family income distribution. It consists of two separate areas: first, to analyze methodologies of measuring income distribution changes, and, second, to develop a theoretical model that is useful for empirical tests of the …

The Consequences Of Rapid Population Growth On Nigeria's Economic Development: A Simple Econometric Analysis, Richard A. Eniang May 1977

The Consequences Of Rapid Population Growth On Nigeria's Economic Development: A Simple Econometric Analysis, Richard A. Eniang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to examine the economic implications of a rapid population growth on Nigeria's economic development. It was particularly interesting to study the relationship, because at the present Nigeria is making some economic progress while undergoing a demographic transition. Apparently, despite the acceptable growth of the national income, the growth of the per capita output has not been encouraging. This output growth must have been hampered by the rather rapid population growth in Nigeria.

The neoclassical growth theory was basically employed to explain the growth of output in the economy in terms of both capital and …

A Case Study Of Displaced Workers: The Hesston Experience, Thomas G. Fritts May 1977

A Case Study Of Displaced Workers: The Hesston Experience, Thomas G. Fritts

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In August of 1976, a factory employing 210 workers began a phased layoff of all employees. This study focused on the subsequent reemployment problems of the workers. Specifically, methods of job search were analyzed to determine if they had an influence upon placement and quality of employment.

Two means of data collection were used in this study. Questionnaires were mailed to all former employees of Hesston Farm Machinery Company and oral interviews were conducted with public and private individuals involved with placement assistance to displaced workers.

Results of the study indicated that public employment offices, private employment agencies, and Hesston's …

United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia Apr 1977

United States Foreign Policy And Mesopotamian Oil 1923-1928, Robert Francaviglia

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis views the efforts of American oil interests to participate in the exploitation of Middle East oil resources in the 192Os as a point of departure in United States foreign policy. In its opposition to official involvement in the affairs of private business, the United States Government insisted that American oil companies negotiate directly with the British Government dominated companies which controlled the Near and Middle East. By placing the execution of its international oil policy under the control of private industry, the United States Government surrendered its capacity to conduct diplomacy with regard to a vital strategic resource. …

Evaluating The Implications Of Structural Change: A Multiregional Input-Output Model Of The Four Corners States, Mark O. Evans Mar 1977

Evaluating The Implications Of Structural Change: A Multiregional Input-Output Model Of The Four Corners States, Mark O. Evans

Economics ETDs

The Southwest is a region under stress. The area is not only a major repository of energy and nonenergy fuels and minerals, but it also contains many of the nation's most scenic and semiprimitive areas. The potential environmental disruption of coal, uranium, and oil shale development is well-researched; but the indirect pressure of enlarged populations in remote areas, although less visible to the casual observer, could have environmental consequences as destructive as the direct capital investment. A multiregional input-output model of the Four Corners states, which interacts with a cohort-survival model, was constructed to forecast the economic and demographic implications …
