Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim Jan 1982

Malaysian Development Planning, David Lim

Support & Other Units (THEi)

Development planning has been described as "a deliberate governmental attempt to coordinate economic decision-making over the long-run and to influence, direct and, in some cases, even control the level and growth of a nation's principal economic variables (income, comsumption, employment, investment, saving, exports, imports, etc.) in order to achieve a pre-determined set of development objectives." One set of reasons for planning centres round the operation of the market system. Thus, market prices are often distorted and can result in a misallocation of scarce resources. Another set revolves round the need to have a rallying point for local and foreign interests …

Land Abundance, Factor Returns, And Nineteenth Century American And British Technology: A Ricardian/Linear Production Model Retrospective, Alexander J. Field Jan 1982

Land Abundance, Factor Returns, And Nineteenth Century American And British Technology: A Ricardian/Linear Production Model Retrospective, Alexander J. Field

Economics

There are three closely related themes in this essay. The first has to do with the characterization of technological differences in the two regions. Contrary to the Rothbarth/Habakkuk tradition , 2 which claims that the distinctive feature of American technology was its "labor saving" quality, this essay argues, in the spirit of Ricardo's remarks, that the most distinctive feature of American in comparison with British technology in the nineteenth century was its capital-saving quality . Some representative examples of this tendency included the American practices of using structures and equipment with shorter service lives, running and depreciating their equipment more …

A feasibility design and cost estimate was completed for a 1 megawatt photovoltaic (PV) facility which would float on an island reservoir at Catalina Island off the coast the coast of Southern California. If built, this project would be one of the largest PV operating facilities to date and also the first floating PV system. The modular facility consists of 250 floating platforms each supporting 430 square feet of flat panel PV cells. This facility would provide 25% of Catalina's yearly peak energy demand and reduce the amount of diesel fuel used.

The Conventionally Stable Sets In Noncooperative Games With Limited Observations: The Application To Monopoly And Oligopoly, Mamoru Kaneko Jan 1982

The Conventionally Stable Sets In Noncooperative Games With Limited Observations: The Application To Monopoly And Oligopoly, Mamoru Kaneko

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper applies the theory of the conventionally stable set to monopolistic and oligopolistic markets. A market model with a finite number of producers and a continuum of buyers is presented and then is formulated as a strategic game in which the producers’ strategies are prices and the buyers’ strategies are demands for commodities. It is shown that a conventionally stable set in this game corresponds to a conventionally stable one in a game where the producers are only players but the buyers are treated as a certain kind of demand function. Furthermore, it is shown that the theory of …

A Value Concept And Methodology, Patricia C. Soucy Jan 1982

A Value Concept And Methodology, Patricia C. Soucy

Theses

This study explores the complexities and methodologies of personal property appraisal, with a focus on how “value” is defined, measured, and applied in practice. Using the example of Tea Leaf ironstone china, the paper illustrates the ways in which appraisers must differentiate between various value concepts—such as true value, market value, and replacement value—depending on the intended purpose of the appraisal. Central to this discussion is the recognition that value is not a fixed quality inherent to an object but rather a function of context, grading, and classification systems employed by appraisers.

The work emphasizes the scientific parallels in valuation, …
