Insulation Of Small Open Economies In The Presence Of External Disturbances Under Alternative Exchange Rate Systems, Hamid Reza Azad May 1988

Insulation Of Small Open Economies In The Presence Of External Disturbances Under Alternative Exchange Rate Systems, Hamid Reza Azad

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study analyzes the determination of the exchange rate system in a small economy when external real and monetary disturbances occur. Choice of exchange rate policy is investigated using a model assuming rational expectations and a loss function expressing the squared deviations of the small country output from desired output. The distinguishing feature of the analysis is the emphasis on real as well as monetary disturbances which originate abroad but are a source of domestic output variation. the link between foreign monetary and real disturbances and variance in output is traced using the thoretical model and the loss function assumed. …

Economic Feasibility Of Assembling Grade-A Milk By Protein Content, W. Stephen Lei May 1988

Economic Feasibility Of Assembling Grade-A Milk By Protein Content, W. Stephen Lei

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This thesis consisted of two computerized simulations of assembling milk from dairy farms and distributing it to milk plants, using TRUCKSTOPS, a commercial truck routing computer program. In the first simulation milk was assembled and delivered to the nearest available plant without regard to protein content, with the high-protein milk delivered to manufacturing plants. Doing so increased the fat and protein in milk delivered to manufacturing plants, and increased cheese production 2.6 percent. It also increased assembly costs and lowered fat and protein in milk delivered to fluid milk plants. The value of the extra cheese was less than the …

International Lending To The Third World, Mark Leddy Apr 1988

International Lending To The Third World, Mark Leddy

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The main emphasis of this paper is on the debt repayment difficulties experienced by the Less Developed Countries (LDCs) in the 1980's. These difficulties are a result of a combination of factors which have led to large accumulations of debt in these countries. The outstanding debt of the LDCs increased from $152 billion in 1975 to $850- $875 billion in 1985 (Meltzer, 1987). According to Dale and Mattione (1983), the major reasons country borrowers pursue foreign loans are: (1) Such loans allow both governments and companies to finance investments that will increase income or exports; (2) Foreign loans offer countries …

Sources Of Business Cycle Fluctuations, Matthew D. Shapiro, Mark W. Watson Apr 1988

Sources Of Business Cycle Fluctuations, Matthew D. Shapiro, Mark W. Watson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

What shocks account for the business cycle frequency and long run movements of output and prices? This paper addresses this question using the identifying assumption that only supply shocks, such as shocks to technology, oil prices, and labor supply affect output in the long run. Real and monetary aggregate demand shocks can affect output, but only in the short run. This assumption sufficiently restricts the reduced form of key macroeconomic variables to allow estimation of the shocks and their effect on output and price at all frequencies. Aggregate demand shocks account for about twenty to thirty percent of output fluctuations …

Changes In R&D Expenditure And Productivity Growth: A Causal Analysis, Mawdudur Rahman, Abdur Chowdhury Apr 1988

Changes In R&D Expenditure And Productivity Growth: A Causal Analysis, Mawdudur Rahman, Abdur Chowdhury

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

A study was conducted to directly test the presence of causal relationship between changes in research and development (R&D) expenditure and productivity growth. Granger causality tests are performed using annual time series data for the period 1956-1983. Three measures of productivity are used -- National Income, National Income per person employed, and National Income per hour of work in the nonresidential business sector. Results show that changes in R&D expenditure affect the growth rate of the 3 productivity measures with different degrees of intensity. National Income per hour of work shows the highest growth rate, with the peak effect occurring …

Fiscal Decentralization And Government Size, Michael L. Marlow Mar 1988

Fiscal Decentralization And Government Size, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Numerous studies have attempted to model the possible factors contributing to universal growth in public sectors. This paper analyzes one device that appears capable of controlling some of that growth: fiscal decentralization. The results reported here also support the use of monopoly government assumptions in models of public policy. The author gratefully acknowledges the comments of Angelo R. Mascaro, Gordon Tullock and an anonymous referee. Views expressed here are of the author alone and do not necessarily represent those of the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Warranties As Signals Under Consumer Moral Hazard, Nancy A. Lutz Mar 1988

Warranties As Signals Under Consumer Moral Hazard, Nancy A. Lutz

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper, I examine whether and how warranties serve as signals of product quality in an environment where there are opportunities for consumer moral hazard. My model is very similar to Grossman’s. A risk neutral monopolist produced a good of fixed and exogenous quality. This product is offered to a market of identical risk-averse consumers, and it can be bundled with a warranty of the monopolist’s choosing. The probability that the product breaks down is a function of its quality and the effort the consumer takes in using it. This consumer effort cannot be observed by the monopolist or …

Gold, Liquidity And Secured Loans In A Multistage Economy. Part I: Gold As Money, Martin Shubik, Shuntian Yao Mar 1988

Gold, Liquidity And Secured Loans In A Multistage Economy. Part I: Gold As Money, Martin Shubik, Shuntian Yao

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

A multiperiod exchange economy with gold used both as money and as jewelry is examined in this paper. The existence of Nash equilibria is proved for the market games with finitely many traders as well as the games with a continuum of traders. For market games with a continuum of traders at infinite horizon, the existence of stationary Nash equilibria has been proved under the assumption that gold is properly distributed at the beginning or a secured loan between traders is available.

Knightian Decision Theory And Econometric Inference, Truman F. Bewley Mar 1988

Knightian Decision Theory And Econometric Inference, Truman F. Bewley

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In this paper I attempt to reconcile the apparent definiteness of econometric practice with the vagueness of subjective probabilities assumed in Knightian decision theory. I argue that some standard uses of classical inference are Knightian in spirit, even though the formal justification of classical methods uses the frequentist notion of probability. Classical confidence regions may be viewed as defining sets of posterior means corresponding to a standardized set of prior distributions. Tests of the null hypothesis that a parameter equals a particular value may be viewed as determining whether it is rational, from a Knightian point of view, to act …

Statistical Inference In Instrumental Variables Regression With I(1) Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips, Bruce E. Hansen Mar 1988

Statistical Inference In Instrumental Variables Regression With I(1) Processes, Peter C.B. Phillips, Bruce E. Hansen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper studies the asymptotic properties of instrumental variable (IV) estimates of multivariate cointegrating regressions. The framework of study is based on earlier work by Phillips and Durlauf (1986) and Park and Phillips (1988, 1989). In particular, the results in these papers are extended to allow for IV regressions that accommodate deterministic and stochastic regressors as well as quite general deterministic processes in the data generating mechanism. It is found that IV regressions are consistent even when the instruments are stochastically independent of the regressors. This phenomenon, which contrasts with traditional theory for stationary time series, is a beneficial artifact …

The Relationship Between Social Work And Labor Unions: A History Of Strife And Cooperation, Shulamith Lala Ashenberg Straussner, Norma Kolko Phillips Mar 1988

The Relationship Between Social Work And Labor Unions: A History Of Strife And Cooperation, Shulamith Lala Ashenberg Straussner, Norma Kolko Phillips

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

The historical relationship between social work and organized labor has been an ambivalent one, with fluctuations paralleling historical changes in social and political values. This paper examines the changing nature of the relationship, with emphasis on the period from the 1870s to the 1940s. While today's relationship is a mutually beneficial one, the fragile nature of the link between organized labor and the social work community cannot be ignored, particularly in light of the increasing involvement between social work and private industry

Welfare Workers As Surplus Population: A Useful Model?, Paula Dressel, Mike Sweat, Michelle Waters Mar 1988

Welfare Workers As Surplus Population: A Useful Model?, Paula Dressel, Mike Sweat, Michelle Waters

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Analysts of organizational and employment issues in social welfare are in need of a more critical orientation for framing debate. We propose that an understanding of welfare workers as surplus population offers critical insights into a number of longstanding welfare concerns, including political coalitions, professional standards, and worker burnout. Empirical evidence is presented to undergird the credibility of the surplus population argument.

Increases In Risk Aversion And Portfolio Choice In A Complete Market, Philip H. Dybvig Feb 1988

Increases In Risk Aversion And Portfolio Choice In A Complete Market, Philip H. Dybvig

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This note examines the effect of changes in risk aversion on the optimal portfolio choice in a complete market. It is shown that an agent who is less risk averse in the Pratt (1964) sense than another will choose a portfolio whose payoff is distributed as the other’s payoff plus a nonnegative random variable plus conditional-mean-zero noise. The proof of the result uses simple first order conditions and basic results from stochastic dominance.

Stock Prices, Earnings And Expected Dividends, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller Feb 1988

Stock Prices, Earnings And Expected Dividends, John Y. Campbell, Robert J. Shiller

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper presents estimates indicating that, for aggregate U.S. stock market data 1871-1986, a long historical average of real earnings is a good predictor of the present value of future real dividends. This is true even when the information contained in stock prices is taken into account. We estimate that for each year the optimal forecast of the present value of future real dividends is roughly a weighted average of moving average earnings and current real price, with between 2/3 and 3/4 of the weight on the earnings measure. This means that simple present value models of stock market prices …
