The Effect Of Stimulus Payments On College Students: Ex-Ante Perceptions And Reality, Rohan Angadi, Vidhura Sbw Tennekoon Sep 2024

The Effect Of Stimulus Payments On College Students: Ex-Ante Perceptions And Reality, Rohan Angadi, Vidhura Sbw Tennekoon

Midwest Social Sciences Journal

In this paper, we use a natural experiment to measure the impact of a transitory positive income shock on college education. On March 11, 2021, the American Rescue Plan Act was signed into law. This act made provisions for the third round of Economic Impact Payment for eligible US residents. Each person in an eligible family received up to $1,400. This stimulus payment was an exogenous positive income shock on US college students if they received the payment. Using primary data collected through a survey, we first investigate how US college students were affected by and responded to this income …

Assessing The Recreational Charter Fishing Market In Florida: A Hedonic Price Analysis, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Pallab Mozumder, Mahadev G. Bhat Sep 2024

Assessing The Recreational Charter Fishing Market In Florida: A Hedonic Price Analysis, Mehrnoosh Asadi, Pallab Mozumder, Mahadev G. Bhat

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

In this study we analyze the effect of a wide range of factors on the variation of recreational fishing trip prices in Florida. We collected extensive data from recreational fishing websites maintained by guides and outfitters and used different empirical methods for quantifying the relationship between trip price and various trip characteristics. The Hedonic Price model was used to estimate the implicit prices of freshwater and saltwater fishing trip characteristics. The results suggest that freshwater and saltwater anglers significantly value the lodging feature included in the fishing trip package. Moreover, saltwater anglers had a higher willingness to pay to catch …

Re-Evaluating The Preferences Of Recreational Gulf Of Maine Cod And Haddock Anglers, Andrew M. Carr-Harris, Scott Steinback Sep 2024

Re-Evaluating The Preferences Of Recreational Gulf Of Maine Cod And Haddock Anglers, Andrew M. Carr-Harris, Scott Steinback

Journal of Ocean and Coastal Economics

Since 2013, fisheries managers have used a bioeconomic model to simulate the effect of proposed regulations on angler participation and subsequent fishing mortality for Gulf of Maine Atlantic cod and haddock using data from a choice experiment survey. In the year following the last choice experiment survey, however, Gulf of Maine cod fishery experienced unprecedented regulatory changes that, to this day, considerably limit recreational harvest. Given the potential influence of these regulatory changes on angler targeting behavior and preferences, we administered a new choice experiment survey in 2019. The new survey instrument and the sampling method were updated relative to …

Teachers' Financial Literacy Knowledge And Self-Efficacy: A Phenomenological Study, Alyssa Lynne Eisenhart Sep 2024

Teachers' Financial Literacy Knowledge And Self-Efficacy: A Phenomenological Study, Alyssa Lynne Eisenhart

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to discover the experiences and self-efficacy beliefs related to financial literacy knowledge for educators in the United States. The theory guiding the study was self-efficacy as it explained how one’s belief in abilities is shaped by their unique background, experiences, and knowledge. The central research question was what are the experiences and self-efficacy beliefs of educators who teach financial literacy? The study aimed to understand the perspectives of teachers as it related to financial knowledge and self-efficacy. A purposive sample, with ten to fifteen participants, were selected based on the criteria that …

Industry 4.0 And The Solution To The Austrian Knowledge And Calculation Problem: A Grounded Case Analysis, Robbie Davis Sep 2024

Industry 4.0 And The Solution To The Austrian Knowledge And Calculation Problem: A Grounded Case Analysis, Robbie Davis

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The dissertation consists of five chapters examining the current state of the Austrian knowledge and calculation problems which have long been characterized as indestructible barriers to a functional, state-controlled central planning body. Modern technological advancements in computing and communications have introduced to the market the means with which to have near perfect knowledge of all information at every stage in the supply and demand processes. Related literature does little more than theorize on industry 4.0’s impact while this research seeks to discover the extent to which industry 4.0 has overcome the Austrian knowledge and calculation problem by analyzing specific ground-level …

Cyclical Time Series: An Empirical Analysis Of Temperatures In Central England Over Three Centuries, Liudas Giraitis, Fulvia Marotta, Peter C.B. Phillips Sep 2024

Cyclical Time Series: An Empirical Analysis Of Temperatures In Central England Over Three Centuries, Liudas Giraitis, Fulvia Marotta, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper builds on methodology that corrects for irregular spacing between realizations of unevenly spaced time series and provides appropriately corrected estimates of autoregressive model parameters. Using these methods for dealing with missing data, we develop time series tools for forecasting and estimation of autoregressions with cyclically varying parameters in which periodicity is assumed. To illustrate the robustness and flexibility of the methodology, an application is conducted to model daily temperature data. The approach helps to uncover cyclical (daily as well as annual) patterns in the data without imposing restrictive assumptions. Using the Central England Temperature (CET) time series (1772 …

Economic Development, Undernutrition And Diabetes, Kaivan Munshi, Swapnil Singh, Nancy Luke, Anu Mary Oommen Sep 2024

Economic Development, Undernutrition And Diabetes, Kaivan Munshi, Swapnil Singh, Nancy Luke, Anu Mary Oommen

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This research connects two seemingly unrelated facts that have recently been documented in developing countries, with important consequences for global health: (i) the weak association between nutritional status and income, and (ii) the elevated risk of diabetes among normalweight individuals. The model that we develop to reconcile these facts is based on a set point for body size that is adapted to (low) pre-modern food supply, but subsequently fails to adjust to rapid economic change. During the process of development, some individuals thus remain at their low-BMI set point, despite the increase in their income (food consumption), while others who …

Essays On Personal Bankruptcy, Wealth, And Entrepreneurship, Wonjin Lee Sep 2024

Essays On Personal Bankruptcy, Wealth, And Entrepreneurship, Wonjin Lee

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

The first two chapters of my dissertation study the role of personal bankruptcy in U.S. entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship inherently carries risk. The majority of businesses are unincorporated, meaning the business debts become personal liabilities for the owner. Consequently, when such a business falters, the owner may be incentivized to file for personal bankruptcy. This paper studies the impact of wealth protection on entrepreneurial activities. Utilizing a regression kink design, I establish a first causal link between potential debt forgiveness and entrepreneurial activities. My findings indicate that more lenient debt relief policies motivate business owners to finance their enterprises. Specifically, an additional …

Effects Of Neuroticism–Anxiety And Sociability Personality Traits On The Relationship Between Testosterone And Risk Propensity In Finance, Urša Ferjančič, Fajko Bajrović, Aljoša Valentinčič Sep 2024

Effects Of Neuroticism–Anxiety And Sociability Personality Traits On The Relationship Between Testosterone And Risk Propensity In Finance, Urša Ferjančič, Fajko Bajrović, Aljoša Valentinčič

Economic and Business Review

Risky financial decisions, defined as rational calculations between expected risk and reward, are subject to various psychological and neurobiological mechanisms. In this context, the relationship between testosterone levels and risk propensity has been investigated, but the results are inconsistent. Here, the effects of some personality traits, neuroticism–anxiety and sociability, on the relationship between testosterone levels and risk propensity were examined in decisions under risk (GDT) and under uncertainty (BART). In a mixed-sex sample of 100 graduate students and experienced decision makers, we found that basal testosterone levels were positively correlated with risk propensity for decisions under risk in males with …

Mapping Characteristics And Financial Importance Of Development Banks Across The World, Jan Porenta, Vasja Rant Sep 2024

Mapping Characteristics And Financial Importance Of Development Banks Across The World, Jan Porenta, Vasja Rant

Economic and Business Review

This paper investigates the financial importance of development banks across regions and income groups. We construct a global banking dataset for the period 1995 to 2021 and analyse the distribution of development banking assets across macro regions and country income groups. We create a composite global and national Development Bank Financial Importance index (DBFI index) that enables us to rank the most financially important development banks across the globe. Development banks play significant and diverse roles in the global financial system, but their financial importance varies across regions and income groups. The paper offers a broad analysis of the global …

Adam Smith, Human Betterment, And His Erroneous Indentification With Self-Interested Human Action, Vernon L. Smith Sep 2024

Adam Smith, Human Betterment, And His Erroneous Indentification With Self-Interested Human Action, Vernon L. Smith

ESI Publications

In this essay I discuss the proposition that Adam Smith has been widely misinterpreted as asserting in his second book, The Wealth of Nations, that emergent modern economies are driven by the strictly selfish motives of their human inhabitants. The propositions articulated in his first book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which offered a theory of society, extended seamlessly into his second book, and continued to be part of his theory of economy. In both works, he distinguished the universal state of being self-interested from actions taken in one's self-interest, and modeled people as creating and following rules of propriety …

Axiomatic Characterization Of Generalized Neo-Eu Preferences And The Falsifiability Of Ambiguity Theories, Manuel Nunez, Mark Schneider Sep 2024

Axiomatic Characterization Of Generalized Neo-Eu Preferences And The Falsifiability Of Ambiguity Theories, Manuel Nunez, Mark Schneider

ESI Working Papers

We introduce a new weakening of the independence axiom, co-extreme independence, which we show characterizes a class that encompasses popular ambiguity models including Hurwicz preferences, ϵ-contamination preferences, and NEOEU preferences. Importantly, our representation unifies these as forms of simple ambiguity models as we show that the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension of these models is either unity or increases linearly with the number of states. In contrast, standard ambiguity models characterized in the Anscombe-Aumann framework are complex ambiguity models that have a VC dimension that is either infinite or increases exponentially in the number of states. We show that simple ambiguity preferences …

Inflation Targeting And Output Stabilization In An Estimated Monetary Model, Konstantin Platonov, Amir Goren Sep 2024

Inflation Targeting And Output Stabilization In An Estimated Monetary Model, Konstantin Platonov, Amir Goren

Economics Faculty Works

This paper studies determinacy conditions in a monetary model with an interest rate rule. In addition to the inflation rate as an argument of the policy rule, we introduce a second argument: output, a case empirically relevant but overlooked in the existing literature on monetary models with flexible prices. Firstly, we estimate a model with money in utility and the production function. We find that an aggressive response to inflation does not necessarily guarantee determinacy anymore. Secondly, we compare monetary policy in the pre-Volcker era and the post-Volcker era. We find that, after the appointment of Paul Volcker, the Federal …

A Critical Evaluation Of Loss Aversion As The Determinate Of Effort In Compensation Framing, Timothy W. Shields, James Wilhelm Sep 2024

A Critical Evaluation Of Loss Aversion As The Determinate Of Effort In Compensation Framing, Timothy W. Shields, James Wilhelm

ESI Working Papers

A robust finding in managerial accounting research is that participants prefer contracts framed as bonuses to economically equivalent contracts framed as penalties. Another finding is that participants put forth more effort when facing penalty contracts than equivalent bonus contracts. Both results are commonly described as due to loss aversion, an integral portion of prospect theory. We test whether loss aversion is correlated with higher effort in an experiment with two parts. In the first part, we elicit individual participants' loss aversion using two measures. In the second part of the experiment, participants choose costly effort to increase the likelihood of …

Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada Sep 2024

Expanding Healthcare Access For The Undocumented Immigrant Community: The Heal For Immigrant Families Act Of 2023, Perla Torres Estrada

The Gettysburg Journal for Public Policy

When it comes to the topic of universal healthcare, most of us will readily agree that healthcare is a human right. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of who should be granted this right, and if it should be left to the free market to determine access and affordability. Specifically, the political debate on expanding healthcare access to undocumented immigrants in the United States revolve around concerns over costs, legality, and equity. Proponents maintain that it is a human right whereas opponents question the potential burden on taxpayers and the implication for immigration policy. The HEAL …

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe Sep 2024

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing work experience of different racial groups. Our goal is to lend support to “middle-out” policy responses that seek to promote greater economic opportunity across the country through targeted sector growth, including manufacturing, while also bringing together people of all races in support of manufacturing regeneration. By pinpointing persistent inequities in U.S. manufacturing, we hope to embolden policy responses that ensure that as the manufacturing sector rebounds and continues to evolve, its high-paying, good-quality jobs are also more inclusive of workers of color.

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson Sep 2024

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson

ESI Working Papers

The wealth of the modern world is a natural historical marvel. Explaining it has traditionally been the purview of economic historians, as exemplified by the recent book How the World Became Rich by Mark Koyama and Jared Rubin. Economic historians, though, tend to only ask process-oriented “how” questions and “by what means” questions of the Great Enrichment. The eight co-authors of Explaining Technology, who are not economic historians, engage the debate asking a different question. Their goal is to explain the exponential shape of our enrichment with a model of the combinatorial evolution of technology. With an eye toward how …

Measuring Consumption Inequality At Household Level In Pakistan 2005-2019, Sahibzada Asadullah, Asfandyar Khan

Business Review

Reducing inequality has been the main focus of every country. This study is an attempt to measure consumption expenditure inequality in Pakistan by focusing on food and non-food components. The study uses secondary data to cover surveys from 2005-06 till 2018-19 using decomposed data taken from Household integrated expenditure survey of Pakistan. Gini coefficient has been used to measure inequality. The study finds fluctuating trends in inequality. Overall both food and non-food consumption inequality has slightly decreased but overall food consumption expenditure inequality increased in 2018-19 when we compared the results with year 2015-16. Food consumption inequality remain higher in …

Why Is Workforce Development Such A Big Deal Now?, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel Sep 2024

Why Is Workforce Development Such A Big Deal Now?, Cheryl A. Burkhart-Kriesel

Cornhusker Economics

For those linked to agriculture or agri-business, you are not only dealing with the national constraints of the current workforce, but if you are involved specifically in production agriculture, you are also hit by the changing size and scope of on-farm workforce trends. These are just a few of the reasons why workforce development in general, and especially in the agricultural sector, is a big deal now.

Two Essays On Institution, Innovation And Trade In China, Cong Nie

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

The relationship between innovation and economic activity is intricately intertwined. This thesis provides an in-depth study of the causal effect of international patenting on exports and, in turn, investigates the impacts of the anti-corruption campaign on innovation. It is organized into two chapters. The first chapter of the thesis examines the implications of international patenting on the export performance of Chinese exporting firms from 2000 to 2016. Based on 289,416 international patents that Chinese residents file in other national or regional patent offices, obtained from the Google Patent Database, we map them to domestic patented exporting firms using the priority …

Training Needs And Costs In Kalamazoo's Core Neighborhoods, Timothy J. Bartik, Bridget Timmeney, Zachary Brown, Gerrit Anderson, Kathleen Bolter, Nicholas Martens, Brian Pittelko

Reports

This report estimates training needs in three Kalamazoo “core neighborhoods”: the Northside, Edison, and the Eastside. Using Census data, the analysis estimates the number of people potentially needing training in these neighborhoods as between 1,254 and 2,098 individuals. This report also estimates this training population’s characteristics, including: childcare needs, lack of a household vehicle, disability, felony records, substance abuse, mental illness. All these characteristics pose challenges for many hundreds in the training population. Based on a review of prior effective “sectoral training programs”, a training program may cost $7,300 per trainee, with over two-thirds of this cost due to various …

Community Networks, Entrepreneurship And The Process Of Economic Development, Ruochen Dai, Dilip Mookherjee, Kaivan Munshi, Xiaobo Zhang

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This research examines the determinants of entrepreneurship in China’s transition from agriculture to domestic production in the 1990’s and the subsequent transition to exporting in the 2000’s. The model that we develop and test to describe these transitions incorporates a productivity enhancing role for community (birth county) networks, which emerge in response to market imperfections at early stages of economic development. Using administrative data covering the universe of registered firms over the 1994-2012 period and the universe of exporters over the 2002-2012 period, we provide causal evidence that these networks of firms were active and were effective at increasing the …

The Effect Of Franchise No-Poaching Restrictions On Worker Earnings, Brian Callaci, Matthew Gibson, Sérgio Pinto, Marshall Steinbaum, Matt Walsh

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We evaluate the nationwide impact of the Washington State attorney general’s 2018-2020 enforcement campaign against no-poach clauses in franchising contracts, which prohibited worker movement across locations within a chain. Implementing a staggered difference-in-differences research design using Burning Glass Technologies job vacancies and Glassdoor salary reports from numerous industries, we estimate a 6 percent increase in posted annual earnings from the job vacancy data and a 4 percent increase in worker-reported earnings.
