Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We aimed to assess whether there was a correlation between the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), desaturation time under 90% (DTU-90), and mean saturation (MS) levels and the parameters associated with tissue hypoxia. Materials and methods: A total of 144 subjects were included in the study. Blood C-reactive protein levels, blood uric acid levels, and urine microalbumin levels were measured and the urine uric acid/creatinine ratio and urine microalbumin/creatinine ratio were calculated. Results: Our study results suggest that MS and DTU-90, as well as the AHI, are correlated with the parameters reflecting hypoxemia and the other events secondary to hypoxia. Conclusion: MS …

An Alternative Method Of Oral To Nasal Endotracheal Intubation In Patients Undergoing Maxillofacial Surgery, Hasan Kutluk Pampal, Meti̇n Alkan, Cengi̇z Beki̇r Demi̇rel, Gökçen Emmez, Nurdan Bedi̇rli̇

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery frequently require nasal intubation. Although awake fiberoptic intubation is the procedure of choice, a fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) may not be available in all clinics. Furthermore, the procedure itself requires skill and experience, and cannot be used when the view is obstructed by bleeding or secretions. Herein we describe 3 patients in whom oral to nasal endotracheal tube exchange was accomplished with the aid of a nasogastric tube after placement of an LMA CTrachTM, as no FOB was available.

To investigate the role of cell adhesion molecules CD44v6 and CEA in the occurrence, development, and metastasis of colorectal cancer (CRC). Materials and methods: The expression of CD44v6 and CEA in 76 CRC tissues and 43 normal colon tissues was detected using an immunohistological technique. The relationship between the 2 molecules’ expression and their pathologic characteristics, especially for metastasis, was investigated. Furthermore, the relevance between the expression of CD44v6 and of CEA was also assessed. Results: Expression of CD44v6 and CEA protein in CRC tissues was higher than in paracarcinoma tissue and normal colorectal mucosa (both P < 0.001). Positive expression of CD44v6 in CRC was associated with lymph node metastasis, Dukes’ stage, and histological differentiation. Higher expression intensity of CEA in CRC was related to lymph node involvement, distant metastasis, and invasion depth. Combining analysis of CD44v6 and CEA can improve the sensitivity and specificity in evaluating the metastatic potential of CRC (P < 0.05). There was no relevance between the expression of CD44v6 and CEA in CRC (P > 0.05). Conclusion: CD44v6 …

There has been increasing curiosity about the appraisal of essential trace elements present in human body fluids and their correlation to human health. Human seminal plasma contains several trace elements that have an imperative role in the normal functioning of the semen. As a result, it is very important to evaluate Zn and other trace elements present in the seminal plasma for the assessment of male infertility. The main objective of this research is to evaluate Zn concentrations and their intercorrelations with semen parameters such as sperm concentration, sperm motility, and normal morphology of the sperm, towards their contribution to …

Tinea capitis is a superficial scalp dermatophyte infection. Tinea capitis is particularly seen during childhood and is not usually seen after puberty. In untreated cases, it can be contagious and can progress to cicatricial alopecia. This study aimed to retrospectively evaluate cases of tinea capitis. Materials and methods: We evaluated 104 tinea capitis patients presenting to our dermatology clinic between 2007 and 2011. Results: Of these patients, 38 (36.5%) were female and 66 (63.5%) were male. The median age was 6.41 ± 3.4 years (range: 1-18 years old). The clinical types appearing in descending order were tinea capitis profunda (88.5%), …
