Potentially pathogenic free-living amoebae have a cosmopolitan distribution in soil, dust, air, and water. Generally, environmental free-living amoebae do not threaten human health. This study aimed to investigate the presence of Acanthamoeba in well waters drawn from different locations in Kayseri, Turkey, which are mainly used for drinking or irrigation by the residents in the region. Materials and methods: Twenty-nine samples, including 26 well water sediment samples and 3 tap water samples as the control, were collected from 3 different locations. Melting snow feeds 5, rain water 18, and tap water 3 of these wells. Results: Five of 26 well …

To detect the prevalence and type distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) in different cytological diagnostic categories. Materials and methods: Between 2007 and 2010, a total of 1014 liquid-based thin preparations of cervical smears were selected and classified according to cytology results. HPV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was also performed using these samples. HPV DNA-positive samples were genotyped by DNA sequencing. Results: Of those enrolled in the study, 45.3% were negative cytologically, 36.4% had atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, 0.3% had atypical squamous cells preventing the exclusion of a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, 16.8% showed a low-grade squamous intraepithelial …

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of hepatitis G virus (HGV, or GB virus C) in patients with hepatitis B and C in Ahvaz, southeastern Iran. Materials and methods: A total of 100 patients were selected; 50 were positive for hepatitis C virus (HCV) and 50 for hepatitis B virus (HBV). HGV status was examined among the HCV- and HBV-positive patients. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit was used to detect anti-E2 antibody. Nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was used for RNA detection from serum samples of chronic hepatitis patients. Sequencing …
