Origin And Performance Of Ranger Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr May 1959

Origin And Performance Of Ranger Alfalfa, W. R. Kehr

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Ranger alfalfa was developed through the cooperative efforts of personnel of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and released for seed increase in 1940. It is a winter-hardy, bacterial wilt resistant variety synthesized from five basic strains selected from Cossack, Turkistan and Ladak. Breeding methods used in the development of this variety were described in detail. Research results obtained on the performance of the basic strains and on the seed lots, produced under certification procedures, in controlled wilt and cold tests and forage yield trials under field conditions at the Nebraska station were presented …

Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover May 1959

Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in Utah. It is of particular importance to the Uintah Basin, Utah area where alfalfa hay and seed production are major sources of agricultural income. This crop owes much of its popularity to the fact that it will normally produce large yields of good forage on land which is unsuited to more intensive cultivation. In many cases it is impractical to advocate disease control practices which involve extra labor or expense and as a result most diseases of alfalfa, if controlled at all, are controlled by the use of resistant varieties.

During the …

The Effect Of Inbreeding Diallel Crosses Of Inbred Lines Of Corn Selected For High And Low Combining Ability, Melvin Dale Rumbaugh Jan 1958

The Effect Of Inbreeding Diallel Crosses Of Inbred Lines Of Corn Selected For High And Low Combining Ability, Melvin Dale Rumbaugh

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The present day hybrid seed corn industry is based upon the development and utilization of inbred lines in hybrid combination. Current breeding procedures are largely predicated on the assumption that the actions of complementary, dominant or partially dominant favorable genes are responsible for the heterosis observed in the hybrids produced. If heterosis were due in considerable part to nonallelic interactions or to overdominance, the present breeding procedures might be expected to yield superior hybrids but would not be highly efficient.

Since the proposal of complementary growth factors as a genetic explanation of heterosis and the alternative proposal of physiological stimulation …

Linkage Relationships In Group Iv In Barley, George W. Wheatley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The development of new and better varieties of plants through plant breeding is essential to meet certain needs of a changing world. Genetics and a knowledge of its principles are the basis for such improvement.

Barley has been used rather extensively in linkage relations studies. Its desirable characteristics are: (1) interspecific fertility and relative ease of hybridization, (2) numerous characters that are easily differentiated, (3) its commercial importance as a crop and (4) there are seven chromosome pairs in each of the four cultivated species.

More than one hundred characters in barley have been investigated. Seven linkage groups in which …

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill May 1951

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The assignment of genetic factors to definite loci in the hereditary mechanism has been a great step in the progress of biology. Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.

Although there is a vast amount of literature dealing with inheritance in barley, yet knowledge of the subject is still very limited. The mode of inheritance of about one hundred …

A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups May 1949

A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Barley (Hordrium sp.) is the most important spring sown cereal crop in Utah, both in acreage and in yield of total digestible nutrients per unit area. It also rates high as a feed crop in the United States. For this reason it is important that varieties are available which are high in yield, high in quality, and disease resistant, along with other desirable characteristics. In order to work toward this end most efficiently, it is first necessary that the genetics of the barley plant be worked out.

Pollination Cycles And Pollen Dispersal In Relation To Grass Improvement, Melvin D. Jones, L. C. Newell Oct 1946

Pollination Cycles And Pollen Dispersal In Relation To Grass Improvement, Melvin D. Jones, L. C. Newell

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The plant breeder is initially concerned with gaining a knowledge of the breeding behavior of his plant materials in order that improvement may be undertaken effectively. It is important to know the different characteristic pollination habits of these plants. To develop and apply techniques applicable to the improvement of a given grass crop, it is desirable to know the time of day and the number of days that the grass sheds pollen. The effects of temperature, humidity, light, and wind on pollination must be considered. Once superiority of germplasm is obtained, the most important consideration is the maintenance of this …

Heterothallism In Schizophyllum Commune, Lois G. Wilbershide Feb 1944

Heterothallism In Schizophyllum Commune, Lois G. Wilbershide

Bachelors’ Theses

For many years, workers have been striving to arrive at definite conclusions in regard to heterothallism in a great variety of plants. Much work has been done and there are many instances where heterothallism has been established and confirmed. Yet, in regard to Schizophyllum commune, few investigators have studied this phenomenon. However, much work of a different nature has been done on Schizophyllum since 1719 when attention was first called to this fungus partly because of the peculiar split character of the gills. It has been collected, classified, and worked on since that time, but the greater share of the …

Alfalfa Breeding, H. M. Tysdal, T. A. Kiesselbach, H. M. Westover Jun 1942

Alfalfa Breeding, H. M. Tysdal, T. A. Kiesselbach, H. M. Westover

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

Interest in the principles of alfalfa breeding has increased greatly with the growing "forage consciousness" of the country at large and the more specific interest developed through cooperation in the Alfalfa Improvement Conference. As is true of many other forage crops, information on the breeding behavior of alfalfa is meager. During the past few years, however, the genetics and principles of reproduction of this crop have come to be better understood and it is the purpose of this paper to bring together the available information pertaining to the improvement of alfalfa and to add certain suggestions with respect to future …

Wilt And Cold Resistance Of Self-Fertilized Lines Of Alfalfas, George L. Peltier, H. M. Tysdal Sep 1934

Wilt And Cold Resistance Of Self-Fertilized Lines Of Alfalfas, George L. Peltier, H. M. Tysdal

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

The relative reactions to cold and wilt of self-fertilized lines of alfalfa through to the fifth generation are reported. Some of the reasons for undertaking a breeding program are given as well as methods used in the controlled cold and wilt determinations. Preliminary studies showed that reinoculating healthy individuals which had already resisted one wilt infection test served to eliminate additional plants, but the percentage healthy was much higher after the reinoculation than after the first inoculation. The foundation materials from which selections were made consisted of selected plants from a number of old Nebraska fields and a large collection …

Microsporogenesis In Lilium Formosum, Marcella Alice Zeman

Bachelors’ Theses

Anthers of Lilium formosum were collected ranging from the very young to the mature. Anthers used for the writing of this paper were gathered around Easter time or early April. The anthers were removed from the bud and the ends were cut off. Each anther was cut into three or four parts at right angles to their respective lengths. After the washing, infiltration, and imbedding was completed, sections were cut from eight to ten micra in thickness. Before staining the sections were placed in a solution of hydrogen peroxide to bleach for three hours. Flemming 's triple stain, a combination …

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking Jun 1928

Sporogenesis In Botrichium Virginianum Swartz, Lewis Abel Stocking

Bachelors’ Theses

The earliest resultful work done in Pteridophytes, very closely similar to Botrychium Virginianum Swartz, was the work of Goebel (1890) on the Ophioglossales. Bower (1890) followed Goebel in his work on the Ophioglossales. He completed a work in 1896, which according to Burlingame (1907), who also did valuable work on the Ophioglossales, is the most comprehensive and satisfactory that has thus far been done. This work had a stimulating effect upon the early study of Botrychium Virginianum Swartz because of the almost entirely similar histology of the two plants. Burlingame’s (1907) work in the Ophioglossales, was done in 1907. He …

The Immediate Effect Of Gametic Relationship And Of Parental Type Upon The Kernel Weight Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach Dec 1926

The Immediate Effect Of Gametic Relationship And Of Parental Type Upon The Kernel Weight Of Corn, T. A. Kiesselbach

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This investigation to determine the relation of the kernel weight of corn to the source of pollen with which it was fertilized has been made to answer several questions of both practical and technical interest: (1) To what extent is kernel weight affected in the current crop by the "breadth of breeding" or the gametic relationship? (2) What is the relation of the diversity of parental type to the immediate effect of foreign pollen upon the kernel weight of corn? (3) Is the immediate effect of cross-fertilization upon the kernel weight of sufficient importance to justify the annual mixing of …

Bulletin 105 - Pedigree Selection Of Seed At The Chapman And Merredin Experiment Farms, Geo L. Sutton Jan 1923

Bulletin 105 - Pedigree Selection Of Seed At The Chapman And Merredin Experiment Farms, Geo L. Sutton

Bulletins 1 - 2999

A Paper read before the Royal Society of the Royal Society of Western Australia, 12th October,1921.

"Pedigree" or "Pure Line" selection is that system of selection under which the choice is made, not. solely because of the attractive appearance of the plant, but because of its ability to transmit its good qualities to the progeny. Such a system requires, and the method of selection ensures, that the qualities sought after shall be hereditary. For this purpose a record of ancestry is essential, hence the use of the term "pedigree."

The work comprises a study of some of the physiological characteristics of the crop together with a comparison of various selection, breeding, and cultural practices in their relation to grain yield.

A Genetic Study Of Plant Height In Phaseolus Vulgaris, R. A. Emerson Mar 1916

A Genetic Study Of Plant Height In Phaseolus Vulgaris, R. A. Emerson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

When pole and bush beans are crossed, 3:1 segregation results whether the pole bean is very tall or only medium in height and whether the bush bean is very short or relatively tall. To determine the interrelation of these two types of behavior by an analysis of the factors concerned in height of plants in beans and by a study of their mode of inheritance was the object of the investigations reported here.
