Weed Plan For Western Australia, State Weed Plan Steering Group, Department Of Agriculture And Food, Western Australia

Bulletins 4000 -

One of the most significant environmental challenges facing Western Australia is the minimisation of the impact of weeds. In the relatively short history of this State since European settlement, some 1155 exotic plant species have established as weeds in our diverse and generally fragile ecosystems. While development for agriculture, mining, transport and housing must by its nature result in some change to the State’s flora, the introduction of weedy plant species has caused serious impacts which cause great concern.

Weeds now pose a serious threat to many of the State’s ecosystems, and impose high annual costs on agricultural industries. Weeds …

‘Forrest’ Resistance To The Soybean Cyst Nematode Is Bigenic: Saturation Mapping Of The Rhg1 And Rhg4 Loci, K. Meksem, P. Pantazopoulos, V. N. Njiti, D. L. Hyten, P. R. Arelli, D. A. Lightfoot Oct 2001

‘Forrest’ Resistance To The Soybean Cyst Nematode Is Bigenic: Saturation Mapping Of The Rhg1 And Rhg4 Loci, K. Meksem, P. Pantazopoulos, V. N. Njiti, D. L. Hyten, P. R. Arelli, D. A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Field resistance to cyst nematode (SCN) race 3 (Heterodera glycines I.) in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cv ‘Forrest’ is conditioned by two QTLs: the underlying genes are presumed to include Rhg1 on linkage group G and Rhg4 on linkage group A2. A population of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) and two populations of near-isogenic lines (NILs) derived from a cross of Forrest × Essex were used to map the loci affecting resistance to SCN. Bulked segregant analysis, with 512 AFLP primer combinations and microsatellite markers, produced a high-density genetic map for the intervals carrying Rhg …

Western Australian Avocado Industry Survey - 2000, Alec Mccarthy May 2001

Western Australian Avocado Industry Survey - 2000, Alec Mccarthy

Horticulture research reports

Key components of the project: The avocado industry in Western Australia has been steadily growing over the past 15 years. During this time there has been no comprehensive survey of the industry to determine its size and production base. This survey aimed to collect information from as many commercial avocado growers as possible about tree numbers, age, yield, markets, growing methods and general industry knowledge.

Industry significance: This survey will provide comprehensive data on the avocado industry that will enable producers, packers, marketeers, investors, etc to have greater confidence in their various decision makings.

Key outcomes: Significant increases in annual …

Genetic Relationships Between Two Rare Plant Species, Aliciella Caespitosa And A. Tenuis, And Their Putative Progenitor, A. Subnuda, Carrie L. Mccracken May 2001

Genetic Relationships Between Two Rare Plant Species, Aliciella Caespitosa And A. Tenuis, And Their Putative Progenitor, A. Subnuda, Carrie L. Mccracken

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Isolated populations have potential to become new species that should have less genetic variation than their ancestors. Small populations are more likely to lose genetic variation, which is, thus, expected to be greater in ancestors. Aliciella caespitosa and A. tenuis, two endemic species, may be derived from small populations of A. subnuda, a widespread species. Chloroplast DNA sequences were used to test this hypothesis. Allozyme data were used to compare genetic variation and numbers of alleles. Chloroplast data do not support the proposed relationships between A. subnuda and the other two species. Allozyme data were not more variable …

Profitable Canola Production In The Great Southern And Lakes District, Paul Carmody, Ashley Herbert Feb 2001

Profitable Canola Production In The Great Southern And Lakes District, Paul Carmody, Ashley Herbert

Bulletins 4000 -

The Canola industry has rapidly grown with a 10 fold increase in area sown in Western Australia over the four years from 1996-99.

The driving force behind this increase in area can be attributed to the successful adoption of weed control technology in Triazine Tolerant Canola.

By knowing the model of the limiting factors, which are usually; weed control, fertiliser practices, blackleg management, variety selection, seeding dates, seeding depths, insect control and swathing, we can make the right decisions and achieve the targeted profit.

To produce yield to potential, all factors need to be optimised, otherwise yields will be decreased …

Characterization Of Natural Variants Of Local Wild Bananas & Seed Progeny Of Musa Acuminata, Muhammad Asif Javed Jan 2001

Characterization Of Natural Variants Of Local Wild Bananas & Seed Progeny Of Musa Acuminata, Muhammad Asif Javed

Student Works (2000-2009)

The purpose of this study was to characterize the variation pattern that exists in the wild Musa acuminata (AA) populations. widely distributed in Malaysia. Fourteen populations of Musa acuminata, which included subspecies malaccensis, siamea and truncata were collected from different locations including Selangor, Pahang, Perak, Kelantan, Kedah and Terengganu for studies on variation within and between populations, based on morphological characters, biochemical, ploidy and genomic DNA content. Techniques of numerical taxonomy were employed to determine the variation pattern and these included use of the clustering method and principal component analysis. Ploidy level and genomic DNA content were determined by flow …

High-Throughput Genotyping For A Polymorphism Linked To Soybean Cyst Nematode Resistance Gene Rhg4 By Using TaqmanTm Probes, Khalid Meksem, Eliza Ruben, David L. Hyten, Michael E. Schmidt, David A. Lightfoot Jan 2001

High-Throughput Genotyping For A Polymorphism Linked To Soybean Cyst Nematode Resistance Gene Rhg4 By Using TaqmanTm Probes, Khalid Meksem, Eliza Ruben, David L. Hyten, Michael E. Schmidt, David A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

An individual soybean breeder can generate over one hundred thousand new genotypes each year. The efficiency of selection in these populations could be improved if these genotypes were effectively screened with one DNA marker that identified an important gene, and if laboratory throughput was high and costs were low. Our aim was to develop a rapid genotyping procedure for resistance to the soybean cyst nematode. A high-throughput genotyping method was developed with fluorogenic probes to distinguish between two insertion polymorphisms in alleles of an AFLP marker that is located about 50 kbp from the Rhg4 gene candidate. The assay uses …

Conversion Of Aflp Bands Into High-Throughput Dna Markers, K. Meksem, E. Ruben, D. L. Hyten, K. Triwitayakorn, D. A. Lightfoot Jan 2001

Conversion Of Aflp Bands Into High-Throughput Dna Markers, K. Meksem, E. Ruben, D. L. Hyten, K. Triwitayakorn, D. A. Lightfoot

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

The conversion of AFLP bands into polymorphic sequence-tagged-site (STS) markers is necessary for high-throughput genotype scoring. Technical hurdles that must be overcome arise from genome complexity (particularly sequence duplication), from the low-molecular- weight nature of the AFLP bands and from the location of the polymorphism within the AFLP band. We generated six STS markers from ten AFLP bands (four AFLPs were from co-dominant pairs of bands) in soybean (Glycine max). The markers were all linked to one of two loci, rhg1 on linkage group G and Rhg4 on linkage group A2, that confer resistance to the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera …
