Bonsai (tray landscape, potted scenery, potted landscape, miniature trees, and rockery) is an artistic horticulture practice of developing aesthetically formed trees and landscapes in miniature with appropriately aesthetic containers. This has been practiced over a few thousand years in oriental cultures, including the ancient Chinese tradition of penzai or penjing, from which the art originated; the miniature living landscapes of Vietnamese hòn non bộ; and the Japanese variations of bonsai and “tray planting” (Gustafson 1995). To produce bonsai plants that share similar shapes and styles of mature, full-size trees, cultivation techniques are used, including leaf trimming, …
An Improved Digestion And Analysis Procedure For Silicon In Plant Tissue, Noah James Langenfeld, Bruce Bugbee
An Improved Digestion And Analysis Procedure For Silicon In Plant Tissue, Noah James Langenfeld, Bruce Bugbee
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Silicon (Si) in plant tissues reduces abiotic and biotic stress, but it is incorporated as silica (SiO2), which is difficult to solubilize for analysis. We modified an oven-induced tissue-digestion and analysis method to improve Si solubilization and validated its accuracy by quantifying the mass-balance recovery of Si from the hydroponic solution and plant tissues of cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Leaf, stem, and root tissues were dried, finely-ground, and digested in 12.5 molar sodium hydroxide at 95°C for 4 hours. Solutions were then acidified with 6 molar hydrochloric acid to achieve a pH below 2 for measurement of …
Asparagus Breeding: Future Research Needs For Sustainable Production, Daniel Drost
Asparagus Breeding: Future Research Needs For Sustainable Production, Daniel Drost
Plants, Soils, and Climate Faculty Publications
Productivity in asparagus (Asparagus officinalis L.) is determined in part by (1) the selection of superior, adaptive genetics, (2) matching the selected genetics to the production environment, and (3) managing the crop production system in ways to maximize harvest potential that are sustainable, profitable, and efficient. Over the last 100 years, a considerable effort by asparagus researchers has gone into breeding superior genetic lines, testing those in numerous locations, and studying how asparagus responds to a multitude of inputs (fertilizers, irrigation, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides). Farmers worldwide have benefited from all of these improvements. However, as we look to the …

Selection And Propagation Of Pinyon Pine, Kylie M. Lawson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Single-leaf pinyon pines are drought tolerant trees native to the Great Basin. This species is a source of wild-collected, edible pine nuts that are in great demand. With no previous research apparent, this thesis aimed to identify wild trees with high cone production as sources for evaluating grafting onto immature and mature trees. Wild sources of scions were identified from four wild stands and six trees per stand. Counting and analyzing the number of scars left by mature cones along the leader branch provided an estimate for each tree‚Äôs productivity and identified trees with greater productivity within a stand. The …

PREMISE OF THE STUDY: In the absence of cDNA, the annotation of RNA editing in plastomes must be done manually, representing a significant time cost to those studying the organellar genomes of ferns and hornworts.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We developed an R package to automatically annotate apparent nonsense mutations in plastid genomes. The software successfully annotates such sites and results in no false positives for data with no sequencing or assembly errors.
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to manual annotation, ReFernment offers greater speed and accuracy for annotating RNA editing sites. This software should be especially useful for researchers generating large numbers of …

Isolated populations have potential to become new species that should have less genetic variation than their ancestors. Small populations are more likely to lose genetic variation, which is, thus, expected to be greater in ancestors. Aliciella caespitosa and A. tenuis, two endemic species, may be derived from small populations of A. subnuda, a widespread species. Chloroplast DNA sequences were used to test this hypothesis. Allozyme data were used to compare genetic variation and numbers of alleles. Chloroplast data do not support the proposed relationships between A. subnuda and the other two species. Allozyme data were not more variable …
An Inheritance Study Of Sedimentation Values In Three Winter Wheat Crosses, Douglas J. Baker
An Inheritance Study Of Sedimentation Values In Three Winter Wheat Crosses, Douglas J. Baker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Three crosses were used to study the inheritance of the sedimentation properties in hard red winter wheat. The parents of the three crosses were the variety Delmar, and the breeding lines 217-61-7-14 and 217-19-5. Delmar has high sedimentation properties, 217-61-7-14 is intermediate, and 217-19-5 has very poor sedimentation qualities.
Sedimentation tests were run on five replications of the parents and 300 samples of the F3 populations in each cross. A semi-micro sedimentation test (a one-fourth scale test) was run on 200 F2 plants and the F1's from each cross. The distributions from each cross were analyzed …
A Study Of Factors Affecting The Germination Of Alfalfa And Safflower Pollen, Ling Lin
A Study Of Factors Affecting The Germination Of Alfalfa And Safflower Pollen, Ling Lin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Pollen grains serve a very important role in the life cycle of flowering plants, in that they are involved in the transmission of inherited characteristics from generation to generation. Because of their small size the study of pollen grains has been necessarily associated with the development of the microscope. Not until the middle of the seventeenth century, when Hooke gave the world the compound microscope, was an instrument available with sufficient power to adequately reveal the shapes of pollen grains. However, two of Hooke's contemporaries, Malpighi and Grew, who used a simple microscope, are generally recognized as the co-founders of …

A Genetic Investigation Of A Yellow Plant Color Characteristic In Winter Wheat, John Oscar Evans
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The objective in wheat hybridization primarily is to obtain new varieties which are of a greater agronomic value than existing varieties. Frequently, however, crosses which obviously will not produce superior commercial types are made and studied in order to obtain genetic information which may be useful to the breeder. This latter phase of breeding, i.e., the accumulation of genetic information, provides the basis for this study.

New and better adapted varieties of crop plants have resulted from the application of the principles of genetics. Fundamental research in the field of barley genetics has helped the plant breeder in developing better varieties for specific uses and adaptability.
Barley is one of the best cultivated crop plants for making genetic studies. It has a wide range of adaptability, exhibits a host of contrasting genetic characters, is a simple diploid with only seven pairs of chromosomes, and all the cultivated species are inter-fertile.
The mode of inheritance of nearly 200 characters has been studied, many of whose genes have …
General And Specific Combining Ability Of Five Alfalfa Clones Including Reciprocal Effects For Seedling Vigor And Seed Yield, Edwin Theodore Bingham
General And Specific Combining Ability Of Five Alfalfa Clones Including Reciprocal Effects For Seedling Vigor And Seed Yield, Edwin Theodore Bingham
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The use of F1 hybrids for commercial production of such cross-pollinated crops as corn, sorghum, sugar beets, onions, and pearl millet suggests the feasibility of using this technique for alfalfa. Production of F1 hybrids of commercial value is dependent on the use of breeding material expressing good combining ability. In order to obtain precise estimates of combining ability for quantitative characters in alfalfa, it is necessary to produce all possible single crosses among a number of parents. The single cross seed required is difficult to obtain due to the vegetative reproduction and isolation required; and, subsequently, limited testing …

Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover
Resistance To And Transmission Of Witches' Broom And Comparative Yields Of Alfalfa Varieties In The Uintah Basin, Utah, David Val Glover
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Alfalfa is the most important forage crop in Utah. It is of particular importance to the Uintah Basin, Utah area where alfalfa hay and seed production are major sources of agricultural income. This crop owes much of its popularity to the fact that it will normally produce large yields of good forage on land which is unsuited to more intensive cultivation. In many cases it is impractical to advocate disease control practices which involve extra labor or expense and as a result most diseases of alfalfa, if controlled at all, are controlled by the use of resistant varieties.
During the …

Inheritance Of 16 Barley Characters And Their Linkage Relationships, Tejpal Singh Gill
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The assignment of genetic factors to definite loci in the hereditary mechanism has been a great step in the progress of biology. Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.
Although there is a vast amount of literature dealing with inheritance in barley, yet knowledge of the subject is still very limited. The mode of inheritance of about one hundred …
A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups
A Study Of Semisterility And Its Lineage Relationships In Translocation Stocks Of Barley, Horace Marr Waddoups
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Barley (Hordrium sp.) is the most important spring sown cereal crop in Utah, both in acreage and in yield of total digestible nutrients per unit area. It also rates high as a feed crop in the United States. For this reason it is important that varieties are available which are high in yield, high in quality, and disease resistant, along with other desirable characteristics. In order to work toward this end most efficiently, it is first necessary that the genetics of the barley plant be worked out.
