Maintaining The Quality Of Western Australia's Oat Harvest, J L. Mcmullan, J. A. Parish, C. V. Honner

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WESTERN AUSTRALIA deservedly enjoys the reputation of being a producer of oats of high milling quality.

Because of this, we have been able to develop valuable export markets which pay a premium for our oats.

For some time Ballidu has been rated as the best milling oat in W.A.

The work reported in this article indicates that other recommended varieties are equal to or better than Ballidu for milling.

Early Pollen Forcing In A White X Black Spruce Hybrid And Its Parental Species, Lawson L. Winton Jan 1965

Early Pollen Forcing In A White X Black Spruce Hybrid And Its Parental Species, Lawson L. Winton

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Viable pollen was successfully forced from winter-collected cuttings of white and black spruce, as well as of a hybrid of them. The natural time difference in flowering was overcame, thus providing a tool for interbreeding these species. During forcing, and naturally on the trees, pollen always shed from white spruce first, then the hybrid and finally from black spruce. Using departures from long-range weather averages, a heat-requirement difference was postulated for each species to account for the time difference in their flowering.

This article gives the results of three rice variety and time of planting experiments carried out at Kimberley Research Station in the I960, 1961, and 1962 dry seasons. The recommendation is to sow the variety Caloro during May.

Stem Rust Of Wheat, H L. Harvey Jan 1964

Stem Rust Of Wheat, H L. Harvey

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

STEM RUST is one of the most serious diseases of wheat and is of world-wide importance.

Fortunately, widespread epidemics are rare in Western Australia because the general climatic conditions are usually unfavourable to the disease.

Nevertheless, localised outbreaks of stem rust are quite common on the Esperance Plains and around Geraldton where seasonal conditions are frequently mild and humid.

The 1963-64 Wheat Stem Rust Epidemic, J T. Reeves Jan 1964

The 1963-64 Wheat Stem Rust Epidemic, J T. Reeves

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Comments on the 1963 epidemic and the current situation regarding rust races and resistant varieties in Western Australia.

THE 1963-64 harvest included 12 million bushels of undergrade wheat, representing 25 per cent, of the total harvest.

The average yield was reduced to only 11.3 bushels per acre. Although these adverse effects were due to a number of causes, the principal one was stem rust.

The economic loss due to this disease in the 1963-64 harvest probably exceeded £10 million.

State Wheat Advisory Committee recommendations for wheat varieties for 1965 plantings.

THE wheat rust epidemic of 1963 has directed attention to resistance of varieties to this disease, new races of which have recently appeared in Western Australia.

However, last year was one of abnormal seasonal conditions, with late summer rains followed by a mild winter, and spring conditions which favoured rust.

Cross Pollination In Apple Orchards, N H. Shorter

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the main aims of the successful apple grower is to reduce seasonal variations in cropping.

With this in view it has become apparent that provision for adequate cross pollination can be important in certain seasons, especially with Granny Smiths, if full advantage is to be taken of chemical thinning and other improved methods of orchard management.

A Genetic Investigation Of A Yellow Plant Color Characteristic In Winter Wheat, John Oscar Evans May 1962

A Genetic Investigation Of A Yellow Plant Color Characteristic In Winter Wheat, John Oscar Evans

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The objective in wheat hybridization primarily is to obtain new varieties which are of a greater agronomic value than existing varieties. Frequently, however, crosses which obviously will not produce superior commercial types are made and studied in order to obtain genetic information which may be useful to the breeder. This latter phase of breeding, i.e., the accumulation of genetic information, provides the basis for this study.

Better Peach Varieties, Frank Melville Jan 1962

Better Peach Varieties, Frank Melville

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The PEACH is a very versatile fruit and a universal favourite. It is surprising then that the area of peaches in this State is very little different today to what it was 15 years ago. This is in spite of the fact that the population has increased by 48 per cent.

New peach varieties now under test could help satisfy the consumers' demand for a better range of high quality eating peaches— and expand the market for peaches in Western Australia.
