Estimation Of Spacecraft Attitude Motion And Vibrational Modes Using Simultaneous Dual-Latitude Ground-Based Data, Zachary William Henry
Estimation Of Spacecraft Attitude Motion And Vibrational Modes Using Simultaneous Dual-Latitude Ground-Based Data, Zachary William Henry
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Cutting-edge Space Situational Awareness (SSA) research calls for improved methods for rapidly characterizing resident space objects. In this thesis, this will take the form of speeding up convergence of spacecraft attitude estimates, and of a non-model-based approach to the detection of vibrational modes. Because attitude observability from photometric data is angle-based, dual-site simultaneous photometric observations of a resident space object are predicted to improve the convergence speed and steady-state error of spacecraft attitude state estimation from ground-based sensor data. Additionally, it is predicted that by adding polarimetric data to the measurements, the speed of convergence and steady-state error will be …

Numerical Analysis Of Aerospike Engine Nozzle Performance At Various Truncation Lengths, Sam Dakka Dr, Oliver Dennison
International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace
The aerospike engine was first devised in the early 1960s where it provided new means of reaching orbit in a single stage. The paper aimes to demonstrate the viability of the technology by showcasing the increased nozzle thrust efficiency over the conventional bell nozzle. Various truncations were applied to the nozzle and each was subjected to two conditions, an over-expansion and near optimum condition. The nozzle contour was developed using the simple approximation method and was chosen to replicate that of the XRS-2200. This anchored the data, thereby validating the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Simulations were completed for at …
Planetary Rover Inertial Navigation Applications: Pseudo Measurements And Wheel Terrain Interactions, Cagri Kilic
Planetary Rover Inertial Navigation Applications: Pseudo Measurements And Wheel Terrain Interactions, Cagri Kilic
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Accurate localization is a critical component of any robotic system. During planetary missions, these systems are often limited by energy sources and slow spacecraft computers. Using proprioceptive localization (e.g., using an inertial measurement unit and wheel encoders) without external aiding is insufficient for accurate localization. This is mainly due to the integrated and unbounded errors of the inertial navigation solutions and the drifted position information from wheel encoders caused by wheel slippage. For this reason, planetary rovers often utilize exteroceptive (e.g., vision-based) sensors. On the one hand, localization with proprioceptive sensors is straightforward, computationally efficient, and continuous. On the other …

Relative Attitude Dynamics And Control Of Spacecraft Using Electrostatic Torque, John Galjanic
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Recent years have seen an increased interest in spacecraft formation flying, with many applications requiring that the members of these formations maintain specific relative attitude configurations. One low-cost method that has been considered to accomplish this is the use of electrostatic torques, which are generated by charging the surfaces of involved spacecraft to allow interaction without physical contact. The research presented in this thesis analyzes a pair of cylindrical-bodied spacecraft operating in deep space. Specifically, the suitability of using electrostatic torques as an actuator to synchronize the two spacecraft's attitude responses is under consideration. The study considers a simplified case, …
