Mars Rover Wheels And Drive, Presley S. Sacavitch, Ryan W. Trevena, Dylan A. Mack, Daniel Hudak
Mechanical Engineering
Cal Poly’s Poly1Rover team, advised by Professor Rich Murray, aims to deploy four student-designed mini-Mars rovers, each equipped with a sample-tube retrieval claw, before 2030. However, the wheels of Poly1Rover’s current 6th generation rover are not ready for deployment to Mars, as they do not utilize space-grade materials, are not optimized for manufacturability, and lack sufficient spoke compliance to absorb landing and high-impact loads. This project will be developed by a team of Mechanical Engineering students at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly): Daniel Hudak, Dylan Mack, Presley Sacavitch, and Ryan Trevena. Next Intent is providing funding …

An Advanced Hexacopter For Autonomous Exploration Of Mars: Attitude Control And Navigation Strategies, Laura Sopegno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Mars exploration has recently witnessed major interest within the scientific community. Unmanned robotic platforms offer reliable solutions to acquire and collect data and information from the Red Planet. Particularly, rovers, landers, and orbiters have significantly shaped planetary exploration on the Moon and Mars, contributing significantly to past missions while also highlighting limitations in their capacity to cover diverse terrains over wide ranges. Given current advances in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer promising alternatives for future scientific missions.
It is argued that hexacopters, with their relatively compact design and redundancy, present a promising …

While rovers have been used by various agencies to explore Mars, their travel is limited by terrain obstacles, which may prevent mission completion. Creating a vehicle equipped with both driving and flight capabilities would allow greater range of motion on extraterrestrial planets. Integrating the technology for both transportation modes into one rover allows for efficiency and advancements in technological and planetary research.

Mechanical Engineering
Passive locomotion is the ability for an object to move from one place to another by the means of the environment. In nature species such as tumbleweed, fox tails, plankton, and man o’ war jellyfish rely on passive modes of transportation for survival and are able to cross vast distances with little to no expenditure of their own energy. This document seeks to explore the feasibility of building a machine relies on the energy of Mars’ environment to explore the Martian surface.
The “Tensegrity Tumbleweed Locomotion” (nicknamed Tumble Bot) senior project was sponsored by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The …
Use Of Manifolds In The Insertion Of Ballistic Cycler Trajectories, Oliver K. Morrison
Use Of Manifolds In The Insertion Of Ballistic Cycler Trajectories, Oliver K. Morrison
Master's Theses
Today, Mars is one of the most interesting and important destinations for humankind and copious methods have been proposed to accomplish these future missions. One of the more fascinating methods is the Earth-Mars cycler trajectory which is a trajectory that accomplishes repeat access to Earth and Mars with little to no fuel-burning maneuvers. This would allow fast travel to and from Mars, as well as grant the possibility of multiple missions using the same main vehicle.
Insertion from Earth-orbit onto the cycler trajectory has not been thoroughly ex- plored and the only existing method so far is a Hohmann-esque transfer …

Supersonic Retro-Propulsion Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Applied To Future Mars Mission, Margarita Nataly Brandt
Supersonic Retro-Propulsion Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Applied To Future Mars Mission, Margarita Nataly Brandt
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Supersonic Retro-Propulsion is one of the most promising emerging technologies being considered by NASA for use in future Mars missions. This new form of Entry Descent Landing has the potential to help increase the allowable payload mass currently constraining many science instruments and operations. Computational Fluid Dynamics was used to show the feasibility of supersonic retro - propulsion in Mars atmospheric conditions. The results presented show the SRP will be able to perform satisfactory using the same conditions that the Curiosity Rover was exposed to during its landing sequence. The plume expansion was analyzed for various cases, moving from free …
Conceptual Design Of A Reusable Mars Aircraft, Bryce L. Horvath
Conceptual Design Of A Reusable Mars Aircraft, Bryce L. Horvath
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This study assumes that the launch vehicles and precision Mars entry descent and landing systems, required for eventual crewed missions to the surface, have been developed, motivating the rapid build-up of a fixed surface base to enable extended human stays. During the time interval between the first successful placement of a heavy (between 20 and 80 metric ton) payload and completion of the baseline human-rated Mars outpost, it will be possible to utilize this large payload delivery capability to accelerate robotic exploration of the surface from the fixed base location.
One element of such an expanded robotic exploration program will …
Investigation Of A Lagrangian-Point Propellant Depot Rendezvous Approach For An Interplanetary Mission To Mars, Joshua W. Ehrlich
Investigation Of A Lagrangian-Point Propellant Depot Rendezvous Approach For An Interplanetary Mission To Mars, Joshua W. Ehrlich
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This thesis investigates the feasibility of a refueling station for a beyond Earth orbit (BEO) mission. The propellant depot is located at the L2 -Lagrangian point within the Earth-Moon system. This investigation determines if a refueling mission will reduce propulsive energy requirements necessary for Earth departure of a BEO-vehicle to achieve an interplanetary transfer to Mars. Furthermore, this research presents a trade study which identifies approximate total requirements for a direct and rendezvous mission to Mars as well as the necessary fuel masses to complete each approach. This analysis provides conclusive information in determining the benefits in utilizing a …

Development, Verification, And Future Applications Of A 3-Dof Entry And Descent Simulation Tool, Shaun Deacon
Master's Theses - Daytona Beach
With any space related mission, the unknown effects are often some of the most important design considerations. These effects must be accounted for in some fashion, and often lead to mission elements being centered around gathering information on the unknown.
It is the purpose of this research to develop and test a tool for simulation of entry, descent, and landing, (EDL) and to present a brief analysis of possible dispersion patterns related to autonomous radiosonde deployment on the surface of Mars.
The EDL simulation tool is written in Matlab. The aerodynamic information used by the tool is obtained with the …
