Modeling And Testing Chain Trencher Excavator And Cone Penetrometer Robotic Prospecting Systems For Lunar In-Situ Resource Utilization, Marcello C. Guadagno Jan 2026

Modeling And Testing Chain Trencher Excavator And Cone Penetrometer Robotic Prospecting Systems For Lunar In-Situ Resource Utilization, Marcello C. Guadagno

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Artemis Missions aim to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon, requiring In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) of water-ice deposits in permanently shadowed regions. Two critical capabilities must be developed to enable ISRU at scale: prospecting instruments that can characterize the spatial distribution and geotechnical properties of icy regolith in situ, and excavation systems that can extract hardened icy regolith efficiently. This dissertation addresses both needs through the development and testing of a Percussive Heated Cone Penetrometer (PHCP) for geotechnical prospecting and a chain trencher excavator for icy regolith mining.

The PHCP was developed across eight design iterations and …

Gravity Fed Hopper Flow Of Bulk Solids For Lunar Isru, Jason Bendixen Noe Jan 2024

Gravity Fed Hopper Flow Of Bulk Solids For Lunar Isru, Jason Bendixen Noe

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

With the return to the moon in the decade of the 2020s, there has been a renaissance of lunar technology development and innovation. This has been particularly true for the area of lunar ISRU (In-Situ Resource Utilization). One key area in ISRU that has been neglected is lunar regolith storage hopper research. Many lunar regolith ISRU researchers use storage hoppers in their work but do not document the properties when designing the hoppers or do not have the information at hand. Because of this, hopper design and documentation are poorly understood, and more research is needed. Hoppers are vital for …

Molecular Modeling Of Phenolic Resin For Carbon-Carbon Composites, Ivan Gallegos Jan 2024

Molecular Modeling Of Phenolic Resin For Carbon-Carbon Composites, Ivan Gallegos

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

One of the most difficult challenges associated with space exploration is terrestrial atmospheric reentry due to the high thermal loads generated. Carbon carbon (C/C) composites have been used as heat shielding materials due to their high strengthto- weight ratio and thermal properties and their applications include heat shielding for various high temperature environments. C/C composites are manufactured by polymer-infiltration pyrolysis (PIP) via cycles of curing and pyrolysis of a prepreg which can be costly and take up to several days. Thus, C/C composites ideal candidates for computationally-driven optimization techniques, such as a multiscale Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach, by …

Initial Solution Improvements To A Tethered Robotic Path Planner Using Random Geometric Graph Configurations And Biased Sampling, Austen J. Goddu Jan 2024

Initial Solution Improvements To A Tethered Robotic Path Planner Using Random Geometric Graph Configurations And Biased Sampling, Austen J. Goddu

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

With NASA's ongoing efforts to establish a presence on the lunar surface to eventually move on to exploring mars, the development of intelligent robotic systems is more important than ever. The ability of robotics to explore hazardous and extreme terrain, coupled with long communication times from earth places an ever increasing need on more robust and efficient autonomy. Tethered robotics offer unique advantages to explore scientific targets both on the lunar and martian surfaces, capable of using their tether as a physical or metaphorical lifeline to allow the exploration of slopes, extreme dark regions, or areas in which wireless communication …

Active Gravity Offloading System With Infrared Tracking For Rover Testing, Travis Wavrunek Jan 2021

Active Gravity Offloading System With Infrared Tracking For Rover Testing, Travis Wavrunek

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Gravity offloading is a tool used to test how different gravitational forces will impact the mobility of rovers bound for Lunar or Martian expeditions. Previous approaches have been successful in simulating partial gravity environments, and this report details how the Infrared- Gravity offload (IRGO) system, developed for the Planetary Surface Technology Development Laboratory (PSTDL) and lunar simulant sandbox, has a similar aim. Through a series of iterations, IRGO has been developed to actively track an infrared beacon and follow a rover within the test chamber to eliminate inertial and friction forces along two horizonal axes. A portion of a rover’s …

Commissioning And Testing Of A New Dusty Thermal Vacuum Chamber, Ben Wiegand Jan 2021

Commissioning And Testing Of A New Dusty Thermal Vacuum Chamber, Ben Wiegand

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The Dusty Thermal Vacuum Chamber (DTVAC) is a new facility purchased by the Planetary Surface Technology Development Lab (PSTDL) that will be used to test the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of extraplanetary devices and systems. With the use of vacuum pumps and simulated regolith, the DTVAC can create extraplanetary environments such as those found on the Moon and Mars. This report details the actions that were taken to prepare the DTVAC for TRL testing, including the development of a Data Acquisition Center (DAC) and test fixtures, along with the findings of baseline tests that were performed to understand the behavior …
