Lightweight Deployment Mechanism Of Solar Arrays For Use In Cubesats, John Wood Ellis
Lightweight Deployment Mechanism Of Solar Arrays For Use In Cubesats, John Wood Ellis
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
Cube satellites, also referred to as CubeSats, were developed in the late twentieth century, and have since served as a cost-effective method of gathering out-of-this-world data. The development of these small-scale satellites have helped universities and small companies worldwide to perform important experiments, as well as gather critical data in order to provide for further space exploration. Cube satellites are designed to be self-sustaining, by using solar cells to capture impinging thermal energy and convert it to power to be consumed by the electronics housed within the satellite itself. In order to function properly, these cells are extended in an …

As mankind reaches to explore extreme environments in space, the application of ceramics surface coatings is increasing. The 2005 mission concept for Solar Probe used a unique design to achieve the necessary thermal control for a very close approach to the solar corona, including the use of a highly refractory, electrically insulating ceramic coating over a carbon-carbon composite heat shield. The proposed trajectory takes the spacecraft from a Jovian fly-by to within 4 solar radii of the Sun, spanning 5 orders of magnitude in solar radiation and solar wind plasma density as well as spacecraft temperatures from <100 K to >2000 K. Using …100>

In this report we present a graphical tool, Behavioral Analysis of Spacecraft Systems (BASS), that can be used by spacecraft designers to perform system-level behavioral analysis of small satellites. The domain-specific spacecraft meta-model is created in the visual modeling tool Generic Modeling Environment (GME) such that spacecraft designs created using the meta-model appear familiar to the spacecraft designers. Users can model scenarios that are to be verified for the design in BASS. The graphical models are assigned formal semantics facilitating the creation of formally verifiable spacecraft models. The C++ application that translates the modeling objects to equivalent mathematical representation of …
Thiokol/Wasatch Installation Evaluation Of The Redesigned Field Joint Protection System (Concepts 1 And 3) Final Test Report, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration
Thiokol/Wasatch Installation Evaluation Of The Redesigned Field Joint Protection System (Concepts 1 And 3) Final Test Report, United States, National Aeronautics And Space Administration

Redesigned field joint protection system installations were performed between 7 and 15 Nov 1989 at the Thiokol Corporation Static Test Bay T-18. The purpose of the installations was to develop procedures for two field joint protection system redesign concepts (Concepts 1 and 3), and to evaluate the processing capability of each concept. The Concept 1 (Double Cork Band Design) configuration consists of two cork bands with K5NA ablation compound applied between them and to the bottom edge of the aft cork band. The Concept 3 (K5NA Design) configuration consists of a single layer of K5NA over the joint/heater/sensor/pin retainer band …
