It was assumed that the divorce experience has a traumatic effect on the post-divorce lifestyle of the divorced displaced homemaker. The main purpose was to determine if vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning affect their perception on selected variables concerning the pre-student teaching field experiences. To complete this main purpose it was necessary to determine vocational home economics students' attitudes toward inductive versus didactic learning. The main subjects were 58 vocational home economics majors, as of Fall, 1979, at the University of Northern Iowa. They included sophomores, juniors, and seniors. All students were females. Studies were conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of three wheat cultivars produced at South Dakota State University. The three wheats were Kitt, Era and Rall. Crude protein analysis by the Kjeldahl method, amino acid content and a biological assay were conducted on all three wheat flours. Kjeldahl analysis yielded the following percentage proteins for Kitt, Era and Rall respectively; 18.1, 13.7, and 11.9. Lysine was the first limiting amino acid for rats in all three cultivars under investigation. A nutrition survey was conducted in which the diets of 79 pregnant Sioux Indian women living on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota were evaluated. A 24-hour recall was used and background information was collected by the researcher at Public Health Service prenatal clinics. The dietary intakes were evaluated according to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA). Diets were considered to be good if they provided all nutrients (protein, calcium, iron, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and ascorbic acid) and energy at or above recommended levels, and poor if they provided one or more nutrients below two-thirds the RDA. Nationally, the elderly know fewer facts about nutrition as compared to younger people (41). Senior citizens have relatively poor diets and many are at nutritional risk. The Congregate Meals Program (CMP) provides one low-cost meal a day, five days a week for participants over 60 years of age and their spouses. The meal is to provide one-third of the RDA for the elderly. This study explored women's attitudes toward menopause in relationship to age, education, marital status, health status, history of hysterectomy, and level of income. The 254 female subjects were reached through different clubs and organizations. The main focus of the research was on a small Iowa city. Information on the six variables was obtained through a questionnaire. The Neugarten et al. (1963) Attitude-Toward Menopause checklist was utilized to determine the subjects' attitudes toward menopause. The checklist contained 34 statements to which the subjects indicated their level of agreement by using a Likert-type scale. Directions were given in group situations with the …

One dressmaker, Mrs. A. H. Taylor of Bowling Green, Kentucky, was studied in order to draw attention to the role of the dressmaker in American fashion. A biography of Mrs. A. H. Taylor and the business history were compiled; available designs were analyzed in relation to current fashion; and an investigation of the business organization was made. It was found that the dressmaking establishment played an important role in the lives of women of that time period. Fashionable custom fit clothing was made available to local residents and to mail-order customers. The establishment was one of the few businesses which …

The study was designed to determine the problems that low and middle socioeconomic status families have in clothing their elementary school-age children. Comparisons were made of the consumer buying attitudes and practices of mothers of elementary school-age children from middle-and low-socioeconomic status families in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Differences between the groups were measured on a 92- item Likert scale questionnaire on the variables-planned buying, appropriateness, conformity, labeling, faulty merchandise, care, serviceability, comfort, and versatility. One-way analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences. The middle socioeconomic group indicated a more knowledgeable attitude on all the scales. Data from personal …

The birth rate in the United States has been declining over the past years from a peak reached in 1957. It is apparent that during the past twenty years increasing numbers of couples have made decisions to limit family size; moreover, the decisions could be easily and effectively implemented with use of modern contraceptive methods. Tubal ligations and vasecetomy have further served to implement decisions to end fertility permanently for millions of couples.
