Overweight and obesity is a growing epidemic among adults, adolescents, and children in the United States. Since 1980, rates of obesity have doubled among adults and tripled among children, and college students are not immune to this trend. This may be due, in part, to portion sizes that exceed individuals' caloric needs. Although many studies have demonstrated that people's food consumption is highly influenced by environmental factors ( e.g., the size of a portion that is given), there has been very little theoretical work exploring the reasons for this influence. Sex type and competitiveness were investigated among 50 female racquetball players between 18 and 41 years of age. Using surveys, the subjects were classified as competitive or noncompetitive. The Bern Sex Role Inventory categorized the players as masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated. The Sport Orientation Questionnaire measured the subject's level of competitiveness. It was hypothesized that competitive subjects would score in the masculine and androgynous categories, while noncompetitive subjects would score in the feminine and undifferentiated categories. To explore the characteristics of home or hand machine knitting in this country , two survey s were conducted. The first examined home or hand machine knitters' instructional needs, yarn and machine brand preferences, and employment characteristics; the second explored availability of machine knitting instruction at educational institutions. The first survey was included in two machine knitting magazines and distributed by a mail order retailer; 579 knitters from 47 states and the District of Columbia responded. The present study was designed to investigate the extent to which college freshmen show an interest in those career opportunities which are available through an education in home economics and to ascertain the extent to which selected individuals and factors influence students' choices of career goals. A total of 342 freshmen students at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) participated in the survey by completing a career interest and influence questionnaire designed by the investigator. The purpose of this study was to identify alternatives and factors considered in the decision to place parents in nursing homes and to Identify feelings, relationships, needs, and satisfaction levels of the adult children involved in the decision. This study explored women's attitudes toward menopause in relationship to age, education, marital status, health status, history of hysterectomy, and level of income. The 254 female subjects were reached through different clubs and organizations. The main focus of the research was on a small Iowa city. Information on the six variables was obtained through a questionnaire. The Neugarten et al. (1963) Attitude-Toward Menopause checklist was utilized to determine the subjects' attitudes toward menopause.
