Family Structure And Parents’ Perceptions Of The Importance Of Youth Developmental Assets: Challenging The Deficit Orientation Of Structurally Diverse Families, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Luke T. Russell, Gabrielle C. Kline

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

Critical family scholars have highlighted that structurally diverse families (e.g. stepfamilies, single-parent families) are often unfairly viewed through a deficit-comparison lens. This includes assumptions that these families are less optimal contexts for raising children than married different-sex nuclear families or hold different parenting and family values. In the present study, we sought to challenge that assumption by having parents rate the importance of developmental assets for their adolescent children and then comparing perceived importance across family structures. To do so we used data from 354 parents (24.6% single-parent families, 16.7% stepfamilies, 58.8% two-biological/adoptive parent families). We found that the overwhelming …

Exploring Childcare Leaders’ Perspectives On Program Philosophies At The Intersection Of Care, Education, And Business: A Multi-Method (Qual + Qual) Study Using Simon Sinek’S Golden Circle, Megan Kybartas

Theses and Dissertations

This multi-method (QUAL + qual) study explores childcare leaders’ perspectives on program philosophies at the intersection of care, education, and business, which I call The Childcare Tripartite. Recognizing the significant dependency on high-quality childcare services and the foundational role of program philosophies in achieving this quality, this research addresses a notable gap in the literature regarding how early childhood leaders communicate and prioritize their program philosophies within the complex American childcare landscape. Employing semi-structured interviews, documentary materials, and demographic forms, and analyzed through both thematic and deductive content analysis, drawing on Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle, the study uncovers how philosophical …

Characteristics Of Adolescent Romantic Partnerships And Their Associations With Partnership Qualities, Jonathon J. Beckmeyer, Gabrielle C. Kline

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

The purpose of our study was to identify characteristics of adolescents’ romantic partnerships that are associated with the quality of those partnerships. 101 romantically involved adolescents (15 to 18 years old, 47.5% female) were recruited from Qualtrics Panel Services for an online, cross-sectional study of family and social relationships. Most adolescents had same-age and different-gender romantic partners, lived geographically close to their partners, and spent several unsupervised hours with their partners each week, had a define the partnership talk, and anticipated stability in their partnership. Partnership characteristics and quality were significantly associated. Living close to partners and seeing them often, …

Fashion Education And Training Prevalence In Fashion Career Success: An Analysis, Mankirat Kaur Jan 2024

Fashion Education And Training Prevalence In Fashion Career Success: An Analysis, Mankirat Kaur

Theses and Dissertations

Is the acquisition of fashion education and fashion training for career success a compulsion or a choice? Many designers came and left their legacies to inspire future generations, yet their journeys have often been overlooked in academic research. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of education and training through core facets of lifelong learning —formal, non-formal, and informal education —over the past century on achieving career success in the fashion industry. A mixed-method content analysis, utilizing triangulation, was conducted to understand the educational and training experiences of prominent designers. Two research questions guided the analysis: RQ1 …

Maternal Autonomy Support And Children’S Social Competencies, Academic Skills, And Persistence: Social Determinants And Mediation, Chang Su-Russell, Luke Russell

Faculty Publications - Family and Consumer Sciences

Drawing on self-determination theory, family stress theory, and the social determinants of health framework, the current study sought to evaluate direct and indirect relationships among socioeconomic status (maternal education and income), parenting stress, autonomy supportive parenting behavior, and children’s positive outcomes (e.g., social competences, academic skills, and persistence) using a racially diverse sample from low-income backgrounds. Using data on 2,233 children collected at birth (T1), age 5 (T2) and age 9 (T3) as part of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study, a structural equation model was tested in MPlus. Associations among main constructs were tested in a single structural …

Examining Social Desirability Bias In Measures Of Financial Behavior, Nicole L. Kelly Sep 2015

Examining Social Desirability Bias In Measures Of Financial Behavior, Nicole L. Kelly

Theses and Dissertations

Surveys that investigate the financial lives of consumers consist of direct questions about financial behavior, with college students being a heavily surveyed and convenient sample (Gutter 2013). However, the subjective nature of survey data is not bias-free, indicated by the presence of disparities between the respondents' reported and actual behavior. Due to the fact that many students begin to acquire loans, establish credit, and initiate saving behaviors in college, it is important that we have a complete understanding the financial behavior of college students.

The goal of this study was to investigate the role of socially desirable responding (SDR) in …
